"archaic" keycap idea. bear with me on this.
« on: Sat, 14 November 2009, 21:11:11 »
Brought this up in my g80 thread, but it's worthy of another topic.

We all love blank keyboards.
if you were anything like me, you used to sandpaper the letters off or spraypaint them in your earlier years. We all probably did it for the same reasons: to improve our typing skill and infuriate our friends just enough to where it was funny, but not enough to where they steal your girlfriend and secretly have sex w her on your mom's bed because goddammit i trusted you dude. i thought you were my BFF you ****ing backstabber.

But I digress

I think "blank" keyboards should have more style. I'm a bit tired of the "sleeper" look, and I'd rather have something avant-garde, tragically ludicrous, ludicrously tragic. The ultimate in postmodern design! teeming with the ironies and allusions that you start to appreciate after a year in community college.

Why not, instead of blank caps, someone prints caps with characters that people stopped using 3000 years ago?

It's just as good as blank, and would look way cool. I was going to suggest latin, and then I found out they already make those. :(

so how about it? hyroglyphic keycaps? too much like wingdings for ya?

phoencian?

linear A?

Ancient chinese looks pretty cool. I don't know much about ancient texts, but I like the way some of them look. Prolly someone here has more knowledge than me.

If that's a bit too overboard, how about just roman numerals for the num row?

Phoenician QWERTY (couldn't find a suitable vowel sound for "E")

I would really love to replace my number keys with roman numerals though.

stop thinking they have to be characters, true art would just be whatever, but indicitive of the key.

maybe an apple (logo?) on A
water on w
a ninja on n

dont limit it to a flat printing either, break out the glitter and rhinestones

Q = Quincy Jones
W = Walter Mathow
E = Eric Idle
R = Robert Deniro
T = Tom Hanks
Y = Yanni

No we don't.

And just for the light theme users:

No we don't.

lol

I think a keyboard should reflect ones personality, nickname or computer theme so i'm in favor of keyboard modifications everything from keycaps, mix-matching switches to paint.

a company called Smooth Creations builds complete high end gaming systems and one of their services includes painting.

here is a video review.

I was thinking of getting a quality paint job done on my next keyboard. there are some starving college students out there that are pro artist with aerosol and brush based paints.

now that'd be awesome. and in the spirit of archaic writing I'd want it engraved. is there like a hobbyist/less expensive version of a dentist's drill?

the IBM Model M15 is really nice. I love the craftsmanship. I would love to do a project something modern but tasteful just to get away from plastic.

That steampunk keyboard is neat, but in my opinion it's overdoing the fancy lettering.

I like the M15 mod, but in the process, they castrated one of its main features by not keeping it adjustable.  That, and they took a very rare M15 out of circulation.
