I saw those things. Seemed like a good idea, so I went and spent $100 getting a new battery, a bigger hard drive, and a faster wifi card,....

For my IBM X24 Thinkpad.

Ok, it is a pound heaver, but it has a 12 inch screen, a lot better keyboard, and a Track Point. Even if I had just bought a clean X24 off eBay I would only have $300 into it. You Mac guys could pick up a 12 inch Powerbook for what one of those toy computers cost.

Graywolf's Law: New is only better than old when it is actually better and costs less.

I've got a X22 that sits in my sons' room.  (the T23 is in my daughter's room)  I love all the non-trackpad-having-thinkpads.  :)  (just recently got rid of a X60s and would consider another, similar model).

I love everything about my X61t except for the fact that it's not an X61s.

(Except, if it were an X61s, then it wouldn't have the 1400x1050 screen, and I'd hate that about it.)

X61s with 8-cell battery: 3.3 lbs
X61t (same basic hardware as the X61s) with 8-cell battery: 4.3 lbs.

My iBook weighs 4.9 - whereas, IIRC, my X61t is over 6 pounds with the UltraBase - and with horribly unbalanced weight.

I had the 8-cell battery on my X60s and that would easily last 6+ hours (under linux with wifi enabled).

What CPU did your X60s have?

I've got a 1.6GHz low voltage Core 2 Duo in my X61t, and get about 4 hours out of it on Windows. (I can get 7+ if we're talking total power on time, with the screen off much of the time, but four hours of screen-on use.)

The low voltage Core Duo.

512MB RAM, 4GB HD, and  a 7" screen.

Did we just step backward 10 years?

I much prefer 512MB Video RAM, 4GB of RAM.

there's a huge difference between HD and SSD. Higher read/write speed rate, it consumes less energy and has no moving parts, ie will live longer.

And UMPCs are all about portability. By the price, you can have one just as an Ad-Hock for example.

I've got an eee pc 701 with 2gb, running arch linux on a 1440x900 res. monitor, flawlessly.
