Can you make any key a macro?
« on: Thu, 29 August 2013, 06:45:37 »
I've been wondering for a long time, why you would need keyboards with macros. I know it is possible for a keyboard maker(e.g. poker, hhkb) to have macros on number keys with a Fn key. But isn't there a program that for example, you can record "t" for the text "hi" when you hold down "tab"or something. If this is possible, why would you even want a whole bunch of macro keys?(e.g. corsair k90/k95)

Btw i couldnt find a topic like this so i started it

thanksbai

Well, with dedicated macro keys you don't have to shift them.

You do however have to reach them, and i find it easier to press 1 eztra key rather then moving my whole hand uehuhe

I just have a few on mine. F8 launches Chrome, and F12 launches Songbird. I also have a few keys disabled which I never use (the menu key, home, end..)

Since I have a Razer BW TE, I can do that in the Synapse software. Not the best board perhaps compared to a Filco or Ducky, but it does have it's perks I guess. Oh and also Page Up and Page Down is set to Volume up/down, respectively.

Across the whole board. You can program any key to whatever you want. You can make Enter "Esc" if you wanted to. Though that would be stupid, the possibility is there.

Yeah I must admit I've gotten pretty used to it. However, the Synapse software is crap. It can be really stressful at times - it will just shut off for no reason and just go back to being a stock keyboard. I'd rather have a Filco and not deal with that hassle to be honest.

you can also use AutoHotkey, which is so awesome. you can create very elaborate macros with this and it's free in both respects (source, beer)

I really like Autohotkey for my macros or rebinds. It does have a slight learning curve, but it's not imposable for someone to learn it in a short while.

Too bad the Synapse software is absolutely horrible. It just stops working on it's own. One minute you have a functioning keyboard, the next it's dead. And ironically, it's started to happen to me more often ever since I joined these forums. Maybe it's a sign..
