Display stand for artisan caps?
« on: Sat, 17 January 2015, 22:31:23 »
I can't find anything about this on the site, but please redirect me if you know of a post that would help me. I am looking for something that can display my artisan caps, as my collection is growing and I don't necessarily want all of them on a keyboard. I have several cherry switches lying around, but I don't have a "holder" for them per-se. Short of crafting a wooden switch holder, or ordering a custom piece of acrylic to drop switches into, does anyone sell a "Cherry MX Display". I have seen the switch testers, but they don't really have enough spaces to be useful.

Need to find yourself one of these (2nd pic).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I've been looking at making myself a shadow box keycap display.  The tricky part is figuring out the lighting and how to mount them since I want them to be at an angle.  It's between trying to figure out an easy way to embed some stems in wood and making a ledge for it to rest on.

I currently have a friend working on 3d printing a topre display solution for me. Depending on how that turns out, I may see about an MX one after.

I've been thinking about that too lately. Best idea I could come up with is to use a white acrylic backing with switch cutouts. Then you can mount it at an angle and backlight it however you like. Another idea I had was to get rid of the backlighting and use a black background with white sides on each box. Then I'd put some sort of lighting in between each box, hopefully this would allow a bit more light to reach the top of the cap.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I was thinking of wood, routering a groove in the wood above the cap, and placing an LED strip in the recess.

I don't think they are deep enough. IIRC they are only just deep enough to hold scrabble tiles.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Corsair RGB.

Or Razer Blackwidow.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

I kinda want a good display stand as well. I might as well use an old switch tester or something similar, as I no longer have a purpose of it other than giving it to someone.

I'm sure someone could make that work.

Would be neat to have a series of those as shelves, with each one having a small strip of LEDs on the bottom to illuminate the caps on the shelf below it.

It's "modded" :)

My Raven's visor isn't very tight so I've tried it in both positions but eventually stayed with the Hellboy look.
