Post Your Vortex / KBT Race
« on: Sat, 15 December 2012, 14:56:27 »
I saw a thread already for the Vortex / KBT Poker and for the Pure, but I didn't see any for the Vortex Race, so I thought I would kick one off.

Purchased a Vortex Race S (limited edition) yesterday from MechanicalKeyboards.com. I posted an unboxing on Flickr [link].

I've got the same model Race! only got 3 modification keys on it at the moment, but got a Nyan Cat set coming, and I'm thinking about buying one of the fancy aluminium spacebars for it.

I'm new here, but I like the sound of an aluminum spacebar. Can you point me where I might find that?

Thanks in advance!

Race with Cherry Browns, Green LED's.

Chucked on Feng's Red Aluminum Spacebar along with a set of his black 33-key Zing set.

Just need an aluminum case now. And maybe that Klaxon set...

MMmmmmmm I love that aluminum spacebar. I agree on the aluminum case.. I really want one. Next group buy that crops up I'm definitely in on. I don't really like this plastic case, and the paint is already chipping off...  >:D

Make sure you post in the round 2 thread in the group buys section. It will let the organiser, imsto, know that more people are interested a might even hurry him up. Which I want hahaha

Lookin' good :)

I like the blue, which makes me wonder why I got red backlighting first, green backlighting second, and considering yellow backlighting third ...
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Does the KBT Race LED's reset to turn off state after every reboot-shutdown and you have to keep turning it back on? Found out the Pure does this and its super annoying.

Yes, both the race and pure do this. Its not that big of a deal to me, I just hit FN+B every time i boot up at night with my pure. If its during the day, i usually just leave it off.

It's freakin' annoying as all hell. Next model needs an internal battery.

It's not a power issue.
Mine was plugged into a powered hub and still did it.

Pretty bummed that the amount of Race owners here is so tiny, from the looks of it. They're a lovely little thing.

Here's mine with a couple of new pickups from Originative.

They've kind of gotten a bad reputation.

Not sure about yours, but the Race L.E. had painted (yes, paint!) keys and case, which wore off incredibly fast. The pink model was worse, bad enough to be recalled. Many reported LED issues as well as key actuation problems.  Don't get me wrong, I like mine, it looks great, but it just lacks in durability. I think they have great designs, but cost cutting during manufacturing lets them down.

I did some reading before I bought the board, but I still went with it because it didn't seem as cramped as a Pure Pro.

Surprisingly, I've had no issues at all with mine. All my LEDs work fine, switches are all good & the white keycap set I bought for it (I did buy the regular all-black edition) has yet to wear away after almost a year of usage, despite my rather oily hands. YMMV, I guess.
