Tenkeyless Terminal Model F (1387033) Interest Check
« on: Wed, 20 July 2011, 11:55:08 »
In the last two hours, I've come upon two almost 100% confirmed sources for these keyboards. As a reminder, these are 104 key Terminal Model Fs which look like 122 key Terminal boards without a numpad (also referred to as the "Space Unsaver" by Kishy). Source #1 appears to have boards that are fairly clean and in good condition, while source #2 probably has dirtier, near salvage grade boards with or without moderate damage to various components (missing key caps, rust, damaged cords, etc.). Depending on who has how many boards in what condition, I'm looking at a tentative upper bound of about $60 per board + shipping to your location. If you would be interested in acquiring this board, please post in the thread below. At this point, I have yet to determine whether this will be a "Group Buy" handled by me or individual orders between you and the sources.

My personal example, the white balance is really off:

...and now I'm off to bed, expect to hear back from me towards the end of the day.

UPDATE: Scratch the previous statement about them being made in 96, it looks like it was a replacement label from someone. I do see one board with a legitimate Model F label, made in 91.
UPDATE: Source #1 has confirmed with pictures. The boards are somewhat clean, but may have a stretched cord and/or missing keys / key caps. Also, this seller might not have the terminal necessary to function test these boards, so they could be sold as is.
UPDATE: Source #1 has committed to cleaning the boards and ensuring they are as complete as possible, meaning replacement key caps for any boards which are missing some, etc. Source #2 has also indicated that they're going to do the same.

Well that's good, because they only come in white! And that picture of the painted board I received a while back has poor color balance, so expect them to be in the classic IBM Ivory.

Are these PS/2 or will they require modding to use on a PC?

Not PC compatible out of the box. They require a physical adaption to PS/2 or a direct connection to the Teensy, then you can use any of the firmwares our members have written that can do the conversion. This particular route can be solder-less, or involve very simple soldering.

If you want to be adventurous, you can swap out the entire controller for one with the custom firmware generated by JohnElliot's program, which would let you use it over PS/2 directly. Involves (more) complicated PCB soldering and requires a spare controller and programmer (could be expensive?).

If any turn up which are non working, or not actual 1387033, or which are too damaged for sale (or which have an uncommon connector) then I am quite interested. The adapter for the others has likely not yet to be written, and otherwise, I always need F parts.

To be honest, this is no longer GB worthy, mainly because it turned out that there's really no appreciable stock. I might be able to get my hands on something for the first few posters, I guess we'll wait and see.

Sign me up for two! I love model Fs! I don't need complete keycaps, but of course internals and casing must be ok.

Revenge, if you need to, allocate one with missing keycaps to me so that other geekhackers, who don't have as many spare keycaps as me, can get complete sets.

Anyway, This topic comes up in searches for 1387033, and makes it harder to find actual ones. I ran into this in 2012 and 2013 when I tried several times to actually get one.

The necro bump on April 1 2014 by dgreekstallion was the joke. At least I assumed it was intended as such.

If there are any more of these out in the world, the first few that go on sale will make an industrial SSK selling price look like a bargain.
