thanks, rowdy and vun. The choice of materials and paint colors was actually picked and built around complementing the DSA retro set - an effort to 'theme', if you will.
@vun, if you want, I can direct you to where I got mine done, but keep in mind that the wood arrives raw and unfinished, and is limited to birch, which isn't the easiest to work with. You'll have to sand, stain, and finish the wood by hand (and very carefully, since the layers aren't very thick, and doesn't allow for a large margin of error). Mine wasn't perfectly done as this was my first time finishing wood - but the imperfections are small enough that it doesn't bother me, and only really shows up under close scrutiny.
The dxf files can be found on the ergodox website.
Layer thickness would be.
1/8"
3/16"
3/16" <--- mounting plate
3/16"
1/8"
I only got the tops and bottoms redone. Wouldn't recommend using wood for the rest of the middle plates as you'd have to sand them down - which could be tricky as you need a certain clearance for the layers.
if you have any questions, feel free to pm me. I did it on a whim. But on the whole - actual wood covers are expensive to do, especially if you need to buy finishing materials for a such a small project (basically, I got the smallest quantities I could, and I barely used 1/10 of the stain and varnish for the covers.) Though I did take the chance to refinish some old chairs in my house after that. It was a fun learning experience.
