I grew up in Caracas, Venezuela. There were pair of coup attempts back in '92. We lived near the airbase in the city and got to see dogfights as well as having all the glass in our block shattered by planes breaking the sound barrier at low altitudes. Sonic booms are loud.

Rochester, New York is known for a few things but none larger than being the home to one of America's first mega-corporations, Eastman-Kodak (est. 1888). Employing a hefty portion of the city and surrounding areas, it drove nearby economies and was a huge boon for the state. For over a century things went well...until they refused to adapt and let the digital photography revolution pass them by. Even stranger, they'd actually been the ones to invent digital photography 40 years earlier and refused to release it for fear of what it would do to film.

Far from their only chance at success, they spent the next four decades shunning multiple digital opportunities, opting time and time again to invest almost exclusively in film. Most digital products they did have were made by other companies and re-branded. All while competitors like Canon and Nikon blew past them in market share as the world changed and they did not. That said, Kodak still had the original patent and did quite well profiting off it. That is, until it expired in 2007. Unfortunately, by the time they came to embrace digital it was too late and it only took five more years for the century-old mega-corp to file for bankruptcy in 2012.

A bizzare murder case has hit international media about something that happened where I live.

I live in the small country Denmark, we are just about 6 million people in total.

A self made inventor invited a Swedish journalist to take a trip in his home made submarine.

After they sailed out they did not return as planned and a search for the submarine startet.

It was found on the bottom of the sea later, but there was no sign of the captain or the journalist. They found captain later, but the journalist was gone.
He could not really explain what had happened and police started a search for the woman.

The sub was taken up from the depths and they found blood everywhere. They also found a big saw.

When they searched the inventors workplace they found a hard drive full of snuff porn. Women being decapitated, strangled and so on. He blamed an intern for that.

Many days later they found an arm. Then a leg. Then a torso. Then head and other leg and finally after a few weeks the last arm of the woman.
The body had been mutilated and stabbed in horrible places I won't mention.

The captain of the sub has been claiming his innocense since day one and still does, though his story has changed many times over the course of the search and detective work.

He was just sentenced to life in prison and will probably remain there till he dies. He did say he was considering filing retrail.

There are many more grim details if you are curious about the case

https://www.google.dk/search?q=submarine+killer+denmark&oq=submarine+killee&aqs=chrome.2.69i57j0l3.5866j0j4&client=ms-unknown&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

The part that I think makes this case so fascinating is that it's almost to horrible to be true. Imagine being trapped in a submarine with a psychopath that is going to torture you until you die. Also the fact that he has never admitted to anything about the murder, so there are many unanswered questions.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the giveaway.

This is an old wives tale from my area.

It's known as the Baldoon mystery.

From Wikipedia:
Quote
According to the tale, the family farm of local resident John T. McDonald was disturbed by a haunting attributed to the curse from a witch; they heard noises of people marching through their kitchen, saw bullets and stones come through windows, and fires started around the house. The tale holds that the McDonalds enlisted the aid of a woman who told them to make a bullet out of silver and shoot a black-headed goose with it, and if they wounded the bird, the witch would be wounded also. Supposedly after McDonald used the bullet to break the wing of the goose, he encountered an old woman seated in a rocking chair on her front porch with a broken arm, and after that point there were no more disturbances at the McDonald farm.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong, a city in China.  Due to the history of WW 2 and how Hong Kong was governed by Great Britain, there is a big difference between Hong Kong people and the mainland Chinese.  Us Hongkongers are not fond of the mainland Chinese due to the differences in which we were raised.  Both Chinese but what are the differences? Being under the rule of GB we Hongkongers we are raised in a democratic system, many of us find mainlanders barbaric and uncivilized.  Living in a small and vastly populated city meant that it is usually cramped outdoors. Mainlanders would come to Hong Kong mainly for 2 reasons, shopping, and business.  In China many instant foods/food are unsafe to consume for example baby milk power, eggs, and many others, they would also come over to get the new iPhones when they are released.  As a result they would come over to their neibor Hong Kong to get these products.  Mainlanders have 2 distinct features, speak a different language in this case Mandarin (the words and characters are the same it's just the pronounciation that is different in case if you are wondering), and they usually have a trolley to stock up on their goods.  Typically we Hongkongers don't like mainders because the train compartments are usually already filled with people and they would bring their trolley with their goods and try to squeeze in these tiny train compartments, especially when rush hour occurs (when people get off work). As China has taken back Hong Kong, we(Hong Kong and China) established a rule that states that Hong Kong should not be changed in the next 50 years due to the difference in culture, educational system, and currency.  These things cannot be changed in a matter of days.  Day by day things are looking extremely grim to us Hongkongers because we want democracy and we as a whole are trying to fight for it.  However, the prime minister of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong police are helping China to change Hong Kong to become  monocratic, under the rule and influence of China.  Both Chinese, but extremely different in  our cultures, and beliefs.

I would say my best and most interesting experience is when I got my first dog, his name is Goby. He is currently 4 years old. I got him when he was 8 weeks old. The most memorable thing about him when I first got him and potty training him. I sometimes have to run some errands so I have to put him in his big kennel for about an hour or so, by the time I return home, the kennel would be full of poop from top to bottom, its quite a scene to say the least. But I still love his goofy face so much and now he is such a good good boy. My dog is my best epxerience.

Grew up in a tiny town in the mountains of Colorado (called Grand Lake for those curious). Was a quite little town of around 900 full-time residents, that saw a huge influx of tourists/part-time residents during the summer. Beautiful town, with no crime to speak of. We never locked anything, since we knew most of the other people who lived there.

The next town over, Grandby, was very similar, with no crime to speak of, and not much going on. But that all changed one fateful afternoon while I was at little league practice....

I remember seeing all the adults rushing around, panicked, and we cut our practice short and they told everyone to go home immediately. My dad came to get me, and I remember him talking on his CB radio to a friend about what was going on in Grandby, trying to piece a story together. I didn't understand it until afterwards.....

Turns out, a friend of my dads (somewhat) named Marvin Heymeer, had become increasingly disgruntled over some property/construction disputes with the town over a new concrete factory being built next to his muffler shop. This had gone on for years, with the city essentially screwing Marvin over in a bunch of ways (I never found out all the details of this). So after he got tired of trying to fight within normal political bounds, he decided to take matters into his own hands and exact his revenge.

The bulldozer he had bought to make a new road to his shop became the basis of his plan. Over the next year and a bit, he made the bulldozer into essentially a tank. He put ceramic tiles in between thick steel sheet metal to bullet-proof the whole cab, and added cameras, gun holes, and an air supply system.

On June 4th, 2004, he sealed himself in the armored cab using a crane and an industrial welder, and set out to exact his revenge on the members of city council that wronged him. He supposedly had a list of specific targets (people and places), and he methodically rolled over and through them all, buildings and cars included. He was unstoppable inside, and the police were powerless. He did call all the businesses he destroyed, however, to make sure that any innocent people got out.

He was finally stopped when he plowed through the local hardware store, which had a basement he didnt know about, and got stuck.
It took them a full day with tons of heavy equipment to break in, and they found Marvin dead. Rather than turn himself over, he shot himself in the head. He was the only casualty of the whole ordeal, but destroyed multiple buildings and cars.

Seeing all of the aftermath of this a couple days later was pretty shocking as a 10 year old, especially since my dad knew the man well, and I had met him myself several times.

Anywho, that is my story, you can read more about it here if you want: https://www.damninteresting.com/the-wrath-of-the-killdozer/ (or just google "killdozer")

As I'm finishing up packing and shipping today, I thought I'd have another little sale to round out this week.

And today there's a couple of options! Due to recent tragic events at the asbestos mine in my backyard, I no longer have easy access to a wealth of asbestos and talc, but on the other hand I have a surplus of gold to share with y'all!

Here's what you'll be playing for today:

Texas Tea

So pick your way to play and get a chance at one of these!

1. Giveaway

All you need to do is post a reply in this thread something interesting about where you live, used to live, or where you grew up. I'm looking for local legends, weird stuff, interesting history, etc. I'm excited to hear about this stuff! The winner of this will receive a Texas Tea Murray.

2. Auction

Add to your chances at getting a Texas Tea by checking out this auction. I know some of you won't be able to participate in this, so hopefully one of the other two options serves you well!

If you do not want your giveaway entry to enter you into the raffle, please say as such in your reply!

4. Sale

And finally! You know em, you love em! A nice little nano-sale to round everything off. This is a raffle for a Black Gold Sun Murray.

ENTRY TO THE SALE FORM

----

The sale (#4) entry form will close at 10pm EST.

Good night and good luck!
Apparently, where I live is the place where the first naval bombardment attack on the US was. It was a day before the Battle of Los Angeles and the Japanese launched shells onto the beach at oil tankers. Ironically, they missed quite a bit and cause around $500 of damage at the time. Thanks for the giveaway!!

Also I’m broke so don’t put me in the raffle lul

I grew up in China before moving to the US when I was 11. My family was quite poor back then, but my parents always try to provide the best they can for me. I’ve always wanted to have a pet rabbit, but it’s not cheap to own a pet. My parents knew how much I want one, so they work some overtume for about a week to save enough to buy it for me. That day was the best in my life when I receive my ball of fluff.

At this point in my life, I've lived in a lot different houses in quite a few different states- some of them have had really cool things related to them, but actually where I live now, Providence, has my favorite 'local legend' of all- Buddy Cianci. Obviously, he's a real guy and all of these things are 100% true, so it's not really a legend, but he was definitely legendary. The tl;dr version is that he was our super corrupt, longtime mayor who despite that actually really improved the city. Here are some choice bits from his wikipedia page, since I am too lazy to write about these things myself:

'Cianci was forced by law to resign from office for the first time in 1984 after pleading nolo contendere or "no contest" – neither admitting nor disputing – on an assault charge alleging an altercation with Bristol, Rhode Island contractor, Raymond DeLeo.[10] Cianci claimed that the man had been romantically involved with his wife, from whom Cianci was separated at the time. Both DeLeo and Cianci's estranged wife disputed the relationship. Providence municipal regulations prohibit a convicted felon from holding public office; ironically, Cianci had promulgated the rule a few years earlier.'

-

'Cianci was indicted in April 2001 on federal criminal charges of racketeering, conspiracy, extortion, witness tampering, and mail fraud. Several other Providence city officials were also indicted. Judge Ronald R. Lagueux said of the case: "Clearly, there is a feeling in city government in Providence that corruption is tolerated. In this mayor's two administrations, there has been more corruption in the City of Providence than in the history of this state."[16]

Much of the trial was focused around a video tape showing top Cianci aide Director of Administration Frank A. Corrente taking a bribe. NBC reporterJim Taricani aired the tape on local television station WJAR, and he was sentenced to six months of house arrest for refusing to reveal his sources to the court. Cianci did not maintain a low profile after the indictment but poked fun at the investigation, code-named "Operation Plunder Dome". Nine people (including Cianci) were convicted in the trials, which were presided over by Judge Ernest C. Torres. Cianci was acquitted of 26 out of 27 charges, including bribery, extortion, and mail fraud, but he was found guilty of racketeering conspiracy, running a corrupt criminal enterprise.'*

-

'Cianci was released from prison on May 30, 2007, to a halfway house near Northeastern University[18] in Boston. A noticeable difference in Cianci's appearance was that he had embraced his bald head, and no longer wore a hairpiece. Initially, Cianci wore the toupée at the halfway house while he worked in Providence. Upon his return one evening, he sat and ate with two other residents of the halfway house, and asked them about his famous toupée. The other residents, identified as "Dave" and "Anthony" encouraged him to "Ditch the toupee and be himself." The next day, it was history. His sentence formally ended on July 28, 2007, and he was moved to home confinement. In numerous interviews after his release, Cianci maintained his innocence, continuously stating the one charge he was found guilty of was basically being the "captain of the ship."'

As you can see, he was pretty ridiculous. But he did completely revitalize downtown Providence (and I don't mean revitalize as a synonym for gentrification here, it was literally just a super gross place that was also kind of a train yard), started Water Fire, and cemented Providence as a city that punches way above it's weight in the arts. Also, he had his own marinara sauce brand, which, actually, was kind of corrupt, too.

*another fun fact related to Operation Plunderdome, my father was dating the woman who was his press secretary during this period. She was (and still is) an awful human being who is generally super incompetent- which is why they hired her, since she was too unintelligent to actually understand how corrupt the Mayor's office was as the time, and could actually go out and talk to the press without having to worry about plausible deniability.

I grew up in Boise, ID. It's a pretty boring city, but Aaron Paul went to my high school, so I've met him a couple of times. There's nothing special about Idaho except for the potatoes. Boise especially embraces the stereotype. Instead of a ball drop on New Year's Eve, we have a giant potato drop. It's rather pathetic, but the city itself is pretty nice and quiet.

Hillsboro, OR used to have the worlds larger Costco. Until one in Utah remodeled... so now the one in Hillsboro is second biggest.

My hometown, Puyallup, is home to the Western Washington State Fair... during WWII this was a Janapnese internment camp, “Camp Harmony”, habouring approximately 7000 people.

There’s also a story that a donkey named Allup farted and the farmer said, “Peeeewww”, giving the town its name. It’s actually named after the local Native tribe.

Two quickies about Minnesota.

I used to go to college in Duluth, and we would visit the Graffiti Graveyard on occasion.  On the underside of the freeway coming in to town, both of the two lane bridges were covered with graffiti, around 100 yards long.  You had to climb up a make shift ladder to hop a concrete barrier and you were in.  Everything within arm's reach was covered with pain for that 100 yards, it's a cool thing to see.  The only downside was the potential homeless harassment that might occur, bringing a few smokes or beers to keep them at bay wasn't a bad idea when you went.  They gated it off a few years ago as it had turned into a homeless village and there were a number of assaults that occurred.

http://highwayhighlights.com/2014/03/graffiti-graveyard-duluth-mn/

Currently I live in Buffalo, MN, a modest, sleepy bedroom and farming town about an hour west of the twin cities.  A small rural town about 10 miles away is home to a secluded property owned by Bob Dylan, with many of his Minnesotan family owning land next to his.  In his more active days, he would show up at local watering holes and dive bars with friends like Willie Nelson, offering to pay the entire bar's tab if no one made any calls until they left.  Dude just wanted a burger and a beer.

Used to live in Charleston and there is an extremely large amount of ghost stories.  Really kind of cool because most of them aren’t cheesy and actually tell you something about the original people that lived there.  My favorite used to be this 3 story brewery called South End brewery and we would always look for the ghost wandering the 3rd floor.  It’s a beautiful city with a lot of character and history; almost need to live there a couple years to really absorb a lot of the history.  (Also, fun fact that is where the patriot was filmed and I remember them covering the streets in dirt for filming).

Thanks for the giveaway and all the sales in the last week, murray has grown on me so much and really appreciate all the opportunities to own one :)

I live in a little town called Honesdale, PA. Honesdale is home to the first commercial steam locomotive run on rails in the United States, the Stourbridge Lion. On August 8, 1829, the Stourbridge Lion started in Honesdale, ran three miles to Seelyville, and returned. They actually currently still have a train that runs here and it is still called the Stourbridge Lion!

Story from my childhood: I grew up in a small village (800 inhabitants) in Germany. Basically a happy little place with nothing to worry about.
One day while playing, however, a relic from the Second World War was found: an abandoned bunker.
Me and my friends (~10 years old) were scared ****less of that stuff, imagine the kind of horrors that could lurk in there. Took us a lot of time to gather the convidence to explorer it...
Just to discover that there was nothing to see.
One room, about 4x6 meters, two meters deepened in a hill, and completely emptied. Certainly already explored by many others before us.
But well, it was a good reminder that there was a huge war raging ~60 years before us, and that we should never take peace for granted.

I visit family in India every few years, and there is a time when I went to visit family who lived in a very rural village for a couple of weeks. They lived in very basic housing, no sewage (outhouse), no running water, no internet, power only for 8 hours a day. Houses was more like mud and straw huts with rooms than modern architecture.I was a child at the time, so this was at least 10 years ago (I don't know how the place is now) but even in context of when I visited, it was still a very, very undeveloped area. Any contact with other people had to be in person unless it was a long-distance call to people outside the village. Anyways, this isn't your village where you have large farms surrounding it on all sides or anything, this is an area where you have semi-dense forest surrounding the clearing that is the village. So, naturally, creepy **** happens when you're in a village like this. I'm talking about finding an animal skeleton here and there, a litter of kittens with no mother (don't know any predators in the area that would kill it), and weird noises in the night. Of these, the most creepy occurrence was when the entire village got called out one night to chase something off, kind of like in the jungle book where all the villagers chase off animals with torches.
3 things scared the living **** out of me:

1. The men going out to chase whatever it was off were genuinely scared/anxious
2. It was a moonless night, so it was extra dark (no power at night) and it was super quiet compared to the usual - bugs still made some noises, but pretty much nothing else you usually tend to hear at night. It's almost as if the darkness was suffocating the noises or something, super eerie.
3. Nobody knew what was going on. I asked my cousins, my aunt and uncle (who was going out to chase whatever it was off), and a couple others, and they had no clue either. Usually, I'd get some sort of explanation, but they straight up said they knew nothing.

Once people went to chase the thing off, everyone had to stay inside a house (usually people sleep outside a lot because they have no air conditioning). I fell asleep  at some point, but asking about it later yielded the same results as before. No one had a clue what it was (maybe the village elder and a few others did).

There is an area in Santa Rosa, CA where I currently work settled in the 1800s by Thomas Lake Harris. Harris was a utopian who established a commune on the site in 1875 called New Eden of the West, part of his Brotherhood of New Life project. This cult taught the surrender of all moral judgment. The colony purchased 1,400 acres of land for a $21,000. Most notably, he established a winery that produced 70,000 gallons of wine in 1886. He claimed the wine so divine that all noxious influences were neutralized by drinking it.

Harris believed in a deity that was both male and female. Through something Harris called “Divine Respiration,” people could commune directly with this god. This was supposedly a sign of possesion by Christ and a sign of immortality. He also taught that each person has a spiritual counterpart, and that the only way to identify that counterpart is to physically consummate with them.

I'm originally from an South African area called Pretoria in a area mostly just bush but moved to Australia

. Due to Australia being a new country(for us), my father took it upon himself to travel throughout the land and thus we'd gone to see Australia's big banana and all their other big items (we've got a sheep, a prawn (shrimp for you folks). As we'd finished these, he'd already began preparing for the next trip!

This time we headed for the sweat inducing state of the Northern Territory which was known for its baby eating crocodiles and that there was frogs everywhere.

After we arrived we hired a car and started driving up towards the national parks in the hopes of doing so fishing. This is where the frog pandemic started. Due to the moisture in the air, frogs were literally everywhere and anywhere you'd look you'd find these little green tree frogs just doing their thing. As we'd slowly made our way back, we'd been interrupted by my father's work had her needed to fly back to Sydney on the next flight so instead of driving back with my mother we'd decided to fly back together but as soon as we got Into the airport and went through the airport customs check we'd been stopped due to there being frogs in a few of our suitcases 😂

This takes place in Toronto, Canada around 22-24 years ago. I wasn’t born yet so it’s definitely before my time. And the story’s also not that mysterious or spooky but I hope it’s alright.
My parents were living around Scarborough at the time, near Port Union. I still roughly remember my Dad telling me this story when I was young.
It was pouring rather hard one night, when my dad briefly steps out to take out the trash. Out of the corner of his eye, he spots a ball of fur slightly sticking out from behind the wall. He got a little closer and realized it was a small silver haired cat just sitting under the slight hangover of our roof, seeking some cover. He quickly realized it needed help as she was soaking wet and shivering.
I distinctly remember my dad telling me her right eye was green and her left was blue. The left one had a cut  on it and one of her ears were also in pretty bad shape.
First thing he did was grab some towels, wrap it up and took her inside. Dried her off, gave her some food, water and a little time to adjust before they approached her again. She didn’t have a collar or anything and frankly I don’t think they had the heart to turn her into the shelter in her condition.
Some time passes. After a few checkups, they concluded she suffered no serious damage, although her vision out of her left eye was still a little poor. My mom and dad ended up naming her Silver and keeping her for a few years before giving her away shortly before I was born. She went to live with a close family friend and I think she passed maybe around 6-7 years ago. I’m 20 now and I never got to meet her but still a pretty neat story. I asked my dad to dig around for a pic but sadly no luck. And thats the story of Silver.

Thanks for all the hard work. Really appreciate the raffle and everything. Cheers!

I was born, grew up, and staked my likely forever home in Vegas.  Going to work it doesn't matter if its 3am or 3pm, people are always out doing Vegas.  That piece of grass on the Las Vegas Strip gets more use than a slot machine.  Oh yeah and about Last Night...

I was born and raised in Mexico. I lived the majority of my younger years in Mexico City, which is one of the largest cities in the world. Mexico City is a sinking city, however, as it was built on top of an old lake from the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. This lake was called the Lago de Texcoco. Home to over 20 million people, the city has sunk more than 32 feet in the last 60 years because the majority of potable water used by the city's inhabitants is extracted from the aquifers under the city. Perhaps the place that has mattered the most to me is the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts). It has sunk so far that its original ground floor is now a subterranean basement. Unfortunately, no architect wants to touch the palace as it houses some of the finest exhibitions of art and the risk is tremendous if a project to rescue it from its base fails.

Thanks for the giveaway and raffle!

I live in NYC so there's plenty of stories, but here's a good one.  Back in 2003, a man living in public housing got caught trying to make a zoo in his Harlem apartment after his 400 lb tiger mauled him.  He said that it was a pit bull, but no one bought it because tiger bites > dog bites ;D  Cops came and they found the tiger along with a 5 and a half foot alligator.  Apparently it was pretty well-known among his neighbors that he had a tiger and a couple years before the guy had a lion cub that the tiger killed--can't put big cats together.  If you google Antoine Yates or Ming the Tiger, there's loads of articles.

I live in NJ but used to live by Portland in the town named Happy Valley.
My 1st work experience away from home working, and really loved Oregon.

The locals told me it was one of the best Summer they've had in years (this was in 2012), although my family back home in NJ got hit with a hurricane Sandy at the time..

I admit that was an absolute trash entry and I entered not expecting to win AT ALL. Some of y'all went all out and shared awesome stuff. I'd imagine Fendent jus put everyone's name into the RNG machine and let it roll. But yes, very low effort entry on my part. I'm over here with like survivor's guilt rn or something; feeling pretty dumb right now. But also feeling blessed. Stupid dumb blessed out here, fam. You know this man Fendent got more in the works so no worries... We'll all continue getting shots.

Edit- Ah, yeh, there's the answer from the man himself.

I generally hate all keycaps. Keycaps are for poofs. Real men touchtype on stems. Non-functional artisans are awesome, I use them for the ESC key ... escape is for cowards anyways, real men go frontal assault.

All packages up through Tundra have been dropped off. 2Short, Texas Tea, and Black Gold Sun will go out by the middle of the week.

And lastly, this serves as the final reminder that the auction ends tomorrow at 1pm.
