You will run with the entire risk of dropped orders, that you already paid for.

I have considered this, and I would need to find some way to mitigate that risk. I do plan to buy a few extra to cover things like lost shipments and then I'll sell the extras after everyone has their set, so any not-paid for orders would be added to those extras. I could even maintain a waiting list for anyone who missed the ordering window. And after a set is made there are always people who didn't realize how much they'd like the actual set. ;D

I will also want some way to vet orders. I may require people to give me their gh/reddit/deskthority username and set some criteria to weed out people who have scammed in the past.

Keep things safe, you do enough by designing and promoting the set, to be dealing with money issues afterwords.

That is true, but there is also the paypal situation to consider. Having funds locked up by paypal would not be a good issue to be dealing with either.

Agree. This sounds risky and you don't have to do that. I mean i'm in either way but you don't have to take the risk here.

Well, after giving it some thought I'm going to listen to you guys. I will take orders as a traditional group buy and submit the order to SP after collecting them. Watch this space, soon better mockups will be coming courtesy of harlw.

I think that's a good idea, and I believe patience might be best for this. As you said, there are a lot of GB that have been deadlockin producers, and I think people have been focused on other keysets right now.

Traditional group buy or massdrop seems a lot safer. That't a lot of money you'd have tied up otherwise.

I have some weird layout boards so I wouldn't mind seeing 2u and 1u shift keys and 3u and 4.5u space bars. A few extra 1u row 4 keys would be nice. Not a big deal if there isn't enough interest.

I like this set. Would go great with a wooden keyboard case, similar to the feel of the renders.

If this ever comes to be, I'm planning on a brass plate, wood case, nautical themed board. Might be awhile though at this rate...

How do you plan to make the brass plate?

I'm definitely interested in seeing this happen. Modern Selectric wasn't quite my cup of tea, but something about this one appeals more to me. I actually really like the contrast of the red and yellow keys on the ergodox and planck mockups--any chance of an addon kit that lets us do those colors on a standard board? (i.e. red space bar, yellow alts, or even just yellow blanks.)

I can't remember the exact process but you can get them made by big blue saw, and I'd assume some other companies. I remember PMing someone else with brass plates and thats what they told me.

agreed, I'd love a red enter/spacebar kit, red arrow keys, etc.

Thanks for your interest everyone! This is just a quick update as I'm on vacation with my family right now. I've been working with harlw on mockups, and they're looking fantastic. Here's a small preview of his awesome work:

We're wrapping up the last of the mockup, with a new "Amity Island" kit. Once that's completed I'll post updated mockups and start working on the group buy.

That looks great. Maybe the cape cod add on could have more red/yellow keys? love the contrast on that. And I have to add that I'm incredibly excited for this. Will have to start sourcing out all the pieces for my custom board to go along with this.

oh yeah, i understand...so sad to be the minority group :(

but would you consider dividing the Colemak and the Dvorak set? for one who uses one of the layout the keys for the other layout are just useless...

There's quite a bit of overlap between Dvorak and Colemak, so by joining together as a group you get lower prices overall by hitting higher quantities. I know it kinda sucks to end up with keys you won't use, but you do get a lower price as a result.

Big update! Thanks to some fantastic work by harlw we have a new mockup:

This should give everyone a good idea of what the set will actually look like once it's manufactured. The ergodox set is not shown in the markup, but it will still be available!

Besides some tweaks to the sets, and the addition of the homing key set (which includes both bumps and dished,) we have the new Amity Island set. Featuring some of the terrors of the sea, including a Hurricane Flag pair, Amity Island has everything you need to turn a nice day on the sea into your worst nightmare.

I love it for the most part, not sure if I'd pick it up tho as my keyboard funds are already allotted for other things. If possible I might pick up the Amity Island add-on by itself.

One question- Is the up arrow key supposed to be row 3 instead of row four?

I would like to suggest changing "Planck Set" to "Walk the Planck".   ;)

We'll think about that one. I was hoping to contain the scary stuff on Amity Island. ;)

Very nice! Any chance at that pretty yellow space bar in standard size?

May have to build a Planck just for that sexiness...

I'll have blanks in every color/row/size available, possibly with an MOQ. Don't worry, yellow spacebars will be included in that. :)

If possible I might pick up the Amity Island add-on by itself.

Sure! I'm not sure which other sets it'd work with, but I won't force anyone to buy a base set.

Right now it's row 4. I think if I were going to change it I'd make it row 2, but for now it's row 4.

Goddamn, now i have to buy the cape cod and amity island packs...

Seriously these look amazing. Any idea of when we'll see this as a GB?

Soon. I've been talking to SP about this set already, but I need to ask for finalized pricing which I should have time to do later tonight or in the morning. There are quite a few custom legends here so I'm trying to figure out the best way to bring them to the community without inflating the set cost.

With Modern Selectric scheduled to ship this week I've been thinking a lot about what my next set will be. Once again looking to my Selectric for inspiration, I focused on the keys themselves. Mine is a Selectric I with a beige case and dark navy blue keys. The combination is very pleasing, but doesn't quite pop the way I wanted it to. I spent some time thinking about this, and looking at design blogs for inspiration. After a while, this question arose:

What would a Modern Selectric typewriter look like in the timeless Navy/Cream/Yellow palette?

This set mimics a Selectric typewriter that never was, but could have been. One that would look right at home in your tiny coastal town, sitting on a big oak desk. The navy blue legends sit upon slightly creamy keys, providing a bright contrast that seems to defy the natural darkness of Navy Blue. The golden yellow of YCF on the mods brings out the handsomeness of BBI in a way that no other shade could.

Examples of placement and various child deals can be found in the full imgur album starting here.

TODO:

  • Create SVG for ship steering wheel. The current unicode symbol looks like a snowflake.
  • Create SVG of an anchor so the planck raise/lower can be an anchor and an upside down anchor.
  • Validate the ISO set. This is cobbled together from my previous set and combined without altgr legends ala Carbon.
Let's make this happen  :thumb:

Just cause it says row 3 on cape cod.
