Already worked from home but even that seems to have slowed way down so definitely finding myself with more free time than I've had in years. Ramping up exercise a bit. Sort of fit now but I haven't lost any weight which I've wanted to do for a year. Gonna start doing stuff twice a day and maybe give up drinking for a while, cos I don't really do that at home anyway.

Also going to do a bit of DIY, paint the garage doors, front gate etc. Also got a 5 year old so been spending more time with him than usual. The schools are all shut here for a month.

I've been working from home and never go out anyway, so there's little change other than being more careful in public with my hands.

All the grocery stores around here are stocked fine, just no hand sanitizer. There's a lot less people out in public which has been really nice.

I can't work from home so if/when everyone else gets sick and work shuts down I'll be home and my normal hobby of obsessive 'shopping' (looking for the perfect ???) won't be a good idea because there will be no money coming in.  Still in denial that the apocalypse is here, should probably be selling stuff in preparation...

On a more positive note I have a lot of things to fit to my bike that I haven't got to between incessant rain and injury so should be able to get that done.

Last Thursday, my company mandated all employees worldwide work from home. Since I'm in software, it's no problem. VPN and RDP and Microsoft Teams to work on stuff and talk to coworkers. I have triple monitors at home, so there's no degradation in working ability except for easier distraction at home (e.g. dog coming in for pets, wife talking to me).

One nice thing is that I get to roll out of bed about an hour later because there's no commute. By the time we get back to our physical space, we'll have a new office space, so that'll be fun maybe.

I may start playing Command and Conquer during lunch (shhhh!).
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

I may do that tomorrow...

I was on GH pretending to pay attention during remote meetings from 9 to 11, walked the dog at 11:30, and replaced my AC motor from 12 to 1:30. So no work has been accomplished by me today.

National parks are giving free passes during this. A beautiful hike is a good way to get out of the house and also be isolated.

I have to go down to the lab and check up on everything to make nothing's exploded yet, every other day, and refill liquid nitrogen every week. Also, answer emails about planning and acquisitions, and check on some other stuff.

Ranges from about 30 min to 120 min in total per day, the latter really only on refill days.

Apparently I make parts which go in medical machines and as such I won't be getting any time off unless I get ill, and that means not enough money to live on.

As it's finally dry today I cycled to work to avoid seeing people on the train - big mistake.  Turns out the <10 people I get not very close to on a train is nothing compared to the easily 50+ I had to pass on a path less than 2 metres wide.  Got the train home as realised my gloves and overtrousers were in the warm coat I didn't need, the touchscreen ticket machine was disabled and when the train arrived (on time!) I was the only passenger with an employee at either end, neither of whom bothered to check the ticket I didn't have.  On arriving in my home station I was amused to see that since yesterday lunchtime they've closed the middle ticket checking gates so you can't get too close to people going the other way.  What they don't seem to have considered is that this forces anyone trying to get on a train to get close to the queue to buy a ticket - clever!  Also had to laugh at the 'if you feel unwell don't get on a train, we can help you better at the station' poster.  Don't think that was there before.

It surprises me how many "closures" only seem to have the effect of squeezing people into smaller and narrower spaces and lines.

Not as much as I should. There was a bit of a rush by everybody I work with to get designs into the council for planning so all deadlines went from whenever to ASAP. I've got everything done except for my main project which is difficult (control room for moveable bridge) and I don't really know what I'm doing so I'm getting distracted whenever I get stuck.

It's a 4 storey building, then there's all this huge bascule room with various specialised plant in there. I'm meant to size all the cables and do up board schematics. I'm a public lighting consultant with a sideline in building services for housing estates and apartments so this is a little bit over my head.

Oooooo...  Tell Tp4 , what is your recommendation for interior lighting, color temperature? LED? RGB LED ? Light Spectral Distribution?  light strip or bulb,  Cellfone vs remote control?

I mostly do street lighting rather than internal, although I do that too.

To be honest I think this trend of using RGB lighting in a home setting looks really obnoxious. It's a bit Xtreme PC Gamer/00's modded car style for me.

Same with those funky retro looking bulbs they look tacky in a modern setting.

I think the best lighting for me is probably something that you don't notice. That's quite hard to achieve with LED because they typically have a much higher glare rating than traditional incandescent bulbs. This is the main issue with them rather than the color temperature which I think you sort of get accustomed to. Glare is the basically the perceived contrast between the light source and the rest of the space. This is most of what grates on people with LED although they're not really able to articulate it and start going on about blue light giving them headaches. I'm dealing with a ton of light spill planning objections from people who have really low light spill on their property and I think it's glare that's at fault. Because

The more expensive Philips fittings have pretty good glare reduction. I always liked how metal halide street lights look best but they're not energy/cost efficient so they're not going to be using those anymore.

So that's a spectral distribution issue no ?

How does glare rating work.

Any chemistry trix for Coronavirus, chyros ?

Unfortunately no, that's for the biologists.

The things we do would be considered overkill by normal peeps :p .

you made me curious, overkill is best... especially with demons
Well chemists are the kind of people who would just KMnO4 it..... Or worse, some tBuLi, iBu3Al, Me2Zn, etc. :D (basically the "kill it with fire" approach - the latter three compounds are highly pyrophoric)

Mitigating glare is kind of complicated I'm not sure the industry have a good handle on it yet as it's partly psychological and hard to measure. There's a thing called the Unified Glare Rating. Here's a bit of a writeup that explains a few of the factors.

I guess the reason people are putting these LED strips behind their computer monitors is to reduce the contrast between light and dark and the associated eye fatigue. Old fashioned light fittings threw light all over the room fairly evenly with LED you're going to need way more light points, with associated installation costs.

People nowadays are decorating their houses like commercial buildings with mostly light colours and minimal soft furnishings. This makes them easier to clean but makes them less relaxing cos you've all this light and sound bouncing off all the hard surfaces.

I wonder what would be an ideal lighting setup for a desktop/computer setup then. During the day I usually keep the curtains closed to prevent glare and from the sunlight reflecting off of the glossy surface of my monitor. Given this relatively dark room would I then want to place LED strips behind the monitor, like at the back of the desk or is there some better way to light my desk area?

OT: haven't been doing jack in terms of work. Accumulated 100 miles on my bike this week, been practicing melee on netplay and hanging with my housemate. what a life

I haven't a clue to be honest. I think TP's idea that we should all be mounting screens on a wall a few feet from our desk probably makes some sense. You'd be less tied to one position. I haven't tried it yet but I like the idea cos my home office is big but I don't like the idea of buying a TV to try it for a few days then discover I prefer using a monitor.

This makes me laugh. I am an old geezer, and the rule of thumb in the 1950s-60s was that you should be viewing at a foot away for every inch of screen size.

Therefore, a 12-inch screen was good for a small living room and a 17-inch screen was big enough for almost any ordinary household.

Try it with the TV you have now.

@fohat.digs I still have a 20" CRT TV in my room for playing Mega Drive games. Our main TV was still a CRT till about 2010 when the circa 1990 Triniton finally gave out. Getting a 40" TV was a bit of a revelation my mother likes period drama and she was rapt rewatching old **** cos she could actually see the rooms properly for a change.

To be fair I'm trying to do Autocad on this screen not watch I Love Lucy.

@TP I might try experiment with that till I save up for a Predator Thanos.

I've been looking at these,  but the monitors are too close to face.  1.5-2 meters distance is better.

Can't work from home. In saying that I only have to work 3 days a week. Thank you 12 hour shifts.

Your boss must be an ass to deal with then.

Some jobs require your physical presence to actually do said job.

yeah I get it
