One update: the free version of Quake3 is called Quake Live

TF2 is a good one.  I'll check out those other ones (Warsow /Xonotic ) tonight.

Other thought, regardless of what game is chosen I think it best to have a fresh map that is not a default one. It's no fun playing against people that have every pixel of a map memorized in case of games that people play a lot of.

This is a fair point, that's why I am thinking random teams, as teams will usually have 1 or 2 good players with 2 nobody players.

All the participants should get a "participant" keycap...something like a keycap with this:

Kind of design, except custom designed, saying "I PARTICIPATED" and what team you were on. Just a thought, not that we have to do it.

As much as I would like to offer a participation award, I don't think the 1$ entry fee would cover it, but me and i3oiler are working on something...maybe...

Haha, you obviously haven't been in education for a while, it the taking part that counts :D I'm jk but either way a Keycap to remember the event would be nice :D

Yeah...I understand it might not happen. hence the "Not that we have to do it"

And yeah, where have you been in education or parenting in general the last 30 years??? No matter how you did, you're still rewarded!

But yeah, it's just really to remember the event. It IS going to be team based, right?

Let's just do oldschool Doom. That way nobody has an excuse :P DoomSeeker is a great way to get everyone on the same page.

I guess I am old enough that I missed all that 'you're special for trying' rubbish, but still young enough that I have not fabricated a booger factory.

Doom+oblige+aeons of death mods in multiplayer would be amazing fun.

Do you think it would also be good to add a list of people in the OP who are interested in playing ("players" if you will :)) ) so we can start to see team sizes and what not :D

So for servers, New York is pretty much a must when na/eu collide.

At least that is manageable in CS, but I don't know how to rent servers in other games lol :P

What do you think?

I used to be good at FPS games.  I've played a minor amount of NS2, a lot of CS:S, TF2 and Nuclear Dawn (Fun but too bad nobody plays it) and a smattering of other first person shooters.

I'd be willing to join a team if somebody needs a filler. I'm experienced with FPS games in general but my skills aren't where they used to be at, and i've been palying a lot of strategy and puzzle games lately. DOTA 2 Has eaten up so much of my playtime as well (that would be another good genre, as enough GHers play it.) I'd probably grade myself as fair-good for most FPSes.

TF2 would be fun but we'd have to have a groundwork for rules, as there's so much variety in gameplay, weapons, set bonuses etc. TF2 is designed for larger teams as well (think 9 man highlander, not 3 person teams.)

I'm exactly the opposite, which is why I loved ND so much. All about teamwork and group play, going from the commander overseeing everything and making the plans, to the squads fufilling the objectives, to the individual soldiers managing themselves and undertaking orders. . . but you really can't play with teams smaller than 9 guys (like TF2)

Come to think of it, I still have a boatload of ND keys (10-15ish?) in a text file somewhere on my PC that I got from the devs back when I ran one of the only clans for it.

Check that out, I could probably hook a bunch of people up with keys (even if that doesn't turn out to be the tourney game, they're just lying around as-is)

I think that we definitely have enough people for a very decent tf2 match. I was thinking of doing two rounds of payload and two rounds of king of the hill each on different maps. As for loadouts, one thing tf2 has always been good at is equal loadouts so that shouldn't be a problem.

Highlander(teams have one of each class) would be brilliant if we could pull it off!!!! :D

Anyways, tried Warsow. It was OK, but lets just say I'm glad it's free.

HAHAHA. . .

wait, you're serious? You're telling me the Huntsman, the FaN, the Kunai and the Black Box are all balanced, legitimate sidegrades from the stock weapons?

never mind some of the others that completely sidestep the original intention of the weapon it's replacing like the chargin' targe/aladdin's wee booties which basically turn the demoman into an instant kill, line of sight melee character, or the backburner which, for the longest time didn't have the airblast that took all the skill out of pyro, or the milk man set which grants +25 hp (which is more than it sounds if you're a scout) just for wearing a hat and using 2 alt weapons

Honestly playing TF2 with no restrictions would be a huge minus for me. I've played since beta and I still use mostly stock weapons because when last I played (which has been a while because of the issues I stated above) almost every single unlock is easier to use than the stock weapon, with a few caveats. The Dead Ringer and the Cloak and Dagger are obviously made for players who don't care to take the time to properly learn to manage cloaking.

/rant

With all that said, let's play soldner.

Hi, all! OP here, I have been enjoying all your comments and taking them onboard. I still like CS but I will really play anything! :D

I don't think the name should have Techkeys in as they are not running it, only sponsoring it. So still looking for names :)

I will start a new thread at a later date with details on, as well as prizes. If you have any questions you want to ask me feel free to PM or ask here.

The $1 entry fee is to cover server costs which maybe incurred/go towards prizes. Techkeys.us is sponsoring us with prizes (so the latter becomes irrelevant) and I will go into more detail again at a later point.

Regards,
Tym
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

Just an idea, but I have a friend who owns a Day Z server if you choose to run something along the lines of a FFA Survival game. Of course no respawns and limited map space :p

We have so many suggestions for games, why don't we do a "nintendo world championship" style tournament. Teams of x people compete in (3?) different games and whichever team gets the most "points" (W/L) progresses in the ladder to the eventual finals.

We could do games from 3 different engies. Source could be represented by TF2 or CS, one of the quake games for the "quake" engine, and then doom or one of the other F2P games. Since it's unlikely that somebody would be proficient in all 3 games played that would eliminate one ringer carrying the team as well. As an example i'd be highly experienced at CS or TF2 but have never played the other two, so although I might do very well at the source games, I would need somebody else who's played more Quake to pick up the slack in that game. It would also help with "evening" out the teams.

Also i'll throw in "GeekShot" as a possible title since we don't have many suggestions. I might think of one I like better later but for now throw that in the hat.

Nearest I can tell, we're trying to stay away from paid games unless the person who suggests it is willing to give copies away so everyone can play it.

As for loadouts, one thing tf2 has always been good at is equal loadouts so that shouldn't be a problem.

HAHAHA. . .

wait, you're serious?

With all that said, let's play soldner.

I would tl:dr the post I'm about to make btw haha :))

The items that are completely different than the original intended ones (e.g. Demonight set, Huntsman sniper, Gunslinger engineer) are one of the reasons that we are still even talking about an FPS game that's 5 years old, it's like it adds extra classes into the game without actually doing that. Any items that are a "one-hit-kill" (e.g. Scout sandman and cleaver combo) require so much skill and timing that 90% of the time you would be better off taking them out with the primary weapon (blasting them 3-4 times with the scattergun).

If there are items that are blatantly OP, why do 80% of people still use the stock weapons like myself?  The only straight up replacements I can think of are the soldier shovel alternatives and that is because the shovel was proven to be UP compared to other classes melee weapons (and then they nerf'd the equaliser :P).

Saying that the milkmen set adds 25 health for changing two weapons and wearing a hat is ridiculous, the primary has 2 less shots before reloading and a tonne of other disadvantages and you lose your secondary weapon (pistol) which at times is like a sawn off sniper rifle with 12 shots! The mad milk obviously has advantages but this post is long enough :P

We could set which items are disallowed but isn't that getting a bit serious, I thought this was meant to be for fun?
