Modding a Leopold FC660C to 55g
« on: Sat, 13 July 2013, 22:51:55 »
Hey all!

This went really well on Friday night - all up took about an hour and a half to complete, no slicing of the dome sheet's necessary. Very happy with the results :)

The similarities of the internals between these 2 boards is striking, any difference in quality would only seem to be external (caps, body plastics etc).

This is just an image dump for now. I'm going to flesh out the rest of the guide later this week. Apologies for the potatoey nature of the photos. Big thanks to WFD and Khanngg for their sage advice.

Cheers!

Dominatrixy black 55g domes!

Hehe.. like it never happened ;D

Can you comment on the feel of this modded board versus 45g FC660C and 55g RF?

You had to cannibalize a perfectly working Realforce to do this mod?

Certainly!

I really liked the 45g 660C, the swithces felt really nice and snappy all the same. I did sometime's feel that it was a touchhh to light for my tastes though. The 55g domes don't feel drastically different - but they do feel more tactile. They also feel more crisp, like any previous play in each keypress is now gone :) That slight bit of extra weight is perfect too, It's really tasty.

I found the difference between 45g and 55g on the 87U far less pronounced (bear in mind I am used to the 660C though, so the changes in feel are more apparent). When tapping a 45g key vs a 55g 1x1 key with one finger they were only a hair different. But I imagine that the experience of typing on a whole board of 55g switches would be more noticeable if you were used to the 45g 87U.

Cannibalize is such a harsh word.. It's tested and working 100% fine with 45g domes back in place of the 55g ones. I'm going to place it on the classifieds shortly. ;D

this is the same I would like to do with a HHKB :) but that would be a bit more complex I guess (I would have to cut some membrane)

great work anyway. and thanks for sharing!

Nice mod! So it appears it wouldn't be too hard for Leopold to offer a 55g model, too, if Topre is willing to sell them the parts. Wonder if Leopold are considering it.

Are you sure you have to cut membrane for a HHKB? It doesn't look like ekw808 did in his mod http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40185.0

actually I've seen a couple of different membranes for both the HHKB and realforce.

Ah ok fair enough.

I too would like a 55g HHKB or FC660... maybe one day I'll give it a try.
