Hello,
So I have no doubt that I want a mechanical keyboard but as a college student I cannot buy one of each (I'd love to be able to!) so I'm trying to get some experienced feed back.
I've read the wikis and here is what I've come to the conclusion.
Switches: Blue/Brown (Seem to be good first switches)
- I do live with a roommate and am typically up later than he is, are the blues loud enough to annoy a person next to you.
- I do play games but I'm not to worried about that, from what I understand the browns have a slight advantage.
Keyboards:
- I was first drawn to the das with the student discount however after reading through the forums it seems like the filcos are clearly the crowd favorite and I just want to know if the 50 dollar difference is worth it.
Also If I missed some posts in my search, any links would be appreciated.
-
Also, I'd like the keyboard to be full and not tenkeyless.
-
Hello,I am a student too,in my opinion,I would recommand you trying the brown,if you really want to taste different switches, just buy some blue switches and replace some brown switches.
-
The Das Silent will run me like ~100 and the Filco Majestouch-2 will run me ~150. In your opinion does the quality justify the 50 dollar difference?
-
Get a topre or get a cherry mx brown. For the cherry try a filco with nkro from pchome or one from amazon.

Did you include the student discount?

Das for around $100 is including the student discount
-
Yes I included the discount. Unfortunatly topre's are outside of my price range.

If you got a roommate AND you stay up late, brown or maybe even black (that is "supposed" to be one of the quietest cherry) will not warrant your roommate a peaceful night. But if you can't help not getting one, go with brown or red and learn not to bottom out keys. Otherwise, scissor switch might serve your AND you roommate better.
-
It sounds like the browns are the best for me. By the way this forum is legit. Enjoy that people are actually giving constructive feedback.

Nobody spends all day fapping.
You must not remember your high school days very well.

It could get wildly off topic as well from time to time, and we got someone here who is very good at doing that. You'll see if you come back often enough
-
I just want to reiterate that browns still might be too loud for your roommate. I don't know exactly what your situation is, but my brown board has annoyed people in another room in my house (our doors were open, but still). It's not a quiet board by any means if you are coming from a rubber dome or a scissor switch, and that's definitely something you want to consider.

Haha I noticed... Kinda feels like an irc channel.
Ripster: I read you hating on the OCN Ducky or atleast I thought you were. Reasoning behind this?
-
So I went with a 104 key Filco Brown
-
Good choice, I just got mine over the weekend to try along with the Blues. If my room-mate had the blues and I was trying to go to bed while he was yapping away, I'd be pretty ticked off. The Blues are loud, just plain clickity clack the whole time you use it.
On the other hand, typing on the Blues is unmatched when compared to cherry brown.
I sometimes feel like the keys are dragging on the Filco brown I have, probably just how it is or I'm just used to the no effort pushes on the Blues.
Good choice nonetheless.

I still think that MX Blacks are the best for late night ninja typing. One can be nearly silent with them, typing like ninja feet on rooftops, ending sentences with deadly force punctuation. Yeah.
-
Yeah I'm pretty excited even paid the 4 bucks to amazon prime next day it o.o.
-
Das recently lowered the discount for students. So it's not 85~90 after discount anymore. :(
-
So my Filco came in and its amazing. Thanks Guys!

I have browns and live in a dorm. My roomate thinks is more odd that I dont just use the keyboard on my laptop then that it is slightly louder then regular keyboards. It is a tenkeyless and he asked me what I did with the numpad.
-
Yeah I thought about going tenkeyless but I do alot with excel and it just is faster for me with the number pad. Also the keyboard is already way more compact then anything I've ever used so it doesn't bother me. Needless to say I am very happy with my decision.
