Title: [IC] DSA Borealis - The Northern Lights Themed Keyset NOW AVAILABLE
Post by: Jmeferlater on Tue, 09 August 2016, 18:59:02
November 3rd
DSA Borealis is now available at Pimpmykeyboard! Link: http://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-borealis-keyset/

Update Oct. 3rd
Hey guys, it's been a while since my last update to this thread, but I finally have some awesome news to share..

DSA Borealis will be available for purchase on Pimpmykeyboard in November, as part of their Keyset of the Month!
This basically means that you'll be able to get your keyset in the same month that you buy it, something that is becoming more and more rare these days.
The current plan is to have pre-orders on pmk early November and then have the sets be ready to ship by the end of November.

I don't know about prices, but I can't imagine them being more expensive than most other DSA sets, especially since there is no third-party vendor adding on costs, as PMK is just the storefront for SP.

Hey everyone, this is my very first interest check so I'm not super familiar with the whole process. With that being said, here's what I have...

Information on the design
Profile is DSA
Plastic type would be doubleshot ABS
Colors of the gradient from bottom to top: VBV, BBJ, BE, BO, RDA, RDE
Legend color is YCA, SP's glow in the dark color

The inspiration of the keyset comes from the Aurora Borealis:

I originally posted my design in response to a request for this theme. I then posted it on the subreddit, where it got a lot of positive responses.
After narrowing the design down a lot more, I figured it was time to post an interest check here.
Anyways, enough talking, here's the KLE render for my design:

OLD:
More
and here are my attempts at a 3D render for the set (made using this tool https://github.com/Orowheat/KLE-Render (https://github.com/Orowheat/KLE-Render)).
The legend color is different (the KLE is correct) and they're definitely not perfect, but they should give a better idea of what the design looks like:

Updated Renders
Here are my updated 3D renders with correctly colored legends.
I tried to make the renders best reflect the glow in the dark material on the legends, especially the bottom row.

Here are some possible novelties, the constellations are all designed by user Arhipio, and the telescope was designed by me

I know the lines might be too thin, further updates to the novelties will come.
Let me know any feedback you have for these

I think this is a pretty interesting take on a row-by-row colorway, really cool color choices.

Have you spoken with SP about making a set entirely with GID legends and with that many colors? I'm not sure how either of those would impact the price/feasibility of the set.

Also, if you need to see an example of a GID legend, one of the lotuses from Commando 23 has a GID legend (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45655.0). I can take some macro shots of one of mine later if it would help.

Thanks, I haven't spoken to SP yet (is there a specific email I would need to contact them at?), but I have spoken to user livingspeedbump about the number of colors and he said it should be no problem. No idea about the GID though.

A closer shot of that specific key would be great.

I love the idea. Not a huge fan of DSA, but would probably be in regardless just because it's so gorgeous.

Looking forward to it. =)

So, are the legends white or yellow? they seem to differ from the two versions of colors you posted.

I mentioned it in the OP, but the legends are the white in the KLE render. They are the YCA glow in the dark color

Not sure about who to speak with at SP or even what their schedule looks like with all the GBs and ICs popping up right now.

So, if you saw my comment on reddit I said it couldn't be done. But I'm an idiot and figured out a way to take a pic of it glowing. http://imgur.com/PL3QNhU

[attach=1]

To take the picture I had to shine my phone's flash on the key for 10 seconds or so then quickly take a picture with the flash off. However, the GID does not last very long, within a few seconds it goes from fairly bright to too dim to take a picture of. It's also pretty faint looking to the eye in the dark. I don't know much about GID materials, but this keycap is fairly old (as far as modern SA keycaps go) at about three years old, so maybe it's not as strong as it was originally...

Thanks again for the pic. How short the glow lasts doesn't seem like too big of a deal to me, I wasn't expecting it to be like backlighting, but I do think its age might have an effect on that. Either way, the goal is to get some novelty out of the legends and, granted it's possible, I think it would be really really cool.

This is neat.  Haven't seen a set with GID legends before.  It seems like they would allow quite a bit of light through if you used in-switch LEDs.  Backlighting would also double as a "charging" mechanism for the GID material.  Interesting.

The person you want to contact at SP is Melissa.  Or you can poke someone at Massdrop if you'd rather run the set through them.  Shouldn't be too difficult to produce a DSA set right now.  Will be watching closely.

Hello everyone, I'm the original creator of the reddit post which inspired Jmeferlater to design this amazing set. Since then I have been giving him ideas, though I take zero credit, he has done 100% of it. I came here to post an imgur album with novelty keycaps I have been working on. Jmeferlater has given me permission to post these to see if you guys can give new ideas and feedback. These designs will hopefully be included with the final Borealis keycap set. The colors are subject to change and might be made out of GID. Imgur link: http://imgur.com/a/idlqP

Hey guys, here's the first real attempt at a novelty for the set. It is the constellation Cassiopeia, which can be seen in the northern sky.
The design was done by user Arhipio, he has a bunch of other ideas too, so let us know here what you think.
Feel free to share any ideas you have for a novelty as well, I'm really bad at coming up with this stuff.

I messed around with his design a little and probably made the lines too thin.
We can also do some more complicated constellations if this one is too simple.

Again, any feedback would be appreciated

Constellations from left to right are: Big Dipper, Cassiopeia, Gemini, Lyra, and Canis Major. They were all designed by Arhipio again
The telescope was a very quick design by me, so it's not that great.

Once I hear back from SP about the GID legends I'll ask them if these novelties can be done, the lines might need to be more thick.

And yeah, I'm not sure of the exact specifics, but I figured lines couldn't be too thin or sharp. That'll definitely be something I ask about next time I email SP

Love the new constellations. Have you consider playing with the weights of the points? I know some stars are brighter than other perhaps it would look cool if those points were bigger.

The weights actually are a little different right now but only slightly. Arhipio originally made the differences a lot bigger, but I thought it looked a little off.
We could change it back to the original sizes and see if that looks better

We have I guess it isn't that noticeable. If you look at Lyra you can see Vega is larger than the rest of the stars.

We did play around with different point weights. It's probably just hard to see but it's there. Especially if you look at Lyra. I could go back and try and emphasize them more. Edit: didn't realize there was a second page to the forum post so I thought my original comment didn't register. Ooops

Hey guys. Just heard back from SP, there is no problem with using glow in the dark legends for all the keys, which is great to hear.
However, there might be a problem with readability on the bottom row, so I updated the OP with renders with the correct legend colors to give an idea of what it would look like.
Let me know any concerns you might have about the lack of contrast in the bottom row.

You're doing god's work.  I don't like the bottom row color it as much as the last render, but it does increase contrast with the other colors, which is interesting in and of itself.

EDIT: I'm a moron.

The previous render wasn't using the glow in the dark legends, it was just normal yellow that I forgot to change, this newest render changed the color of the legends to the glow in the dark

I was looking at the wrong pic at the top, don't mind me ~_~

EDIT, actual feedback: I wonder if the "up" arrowkey would look better matching the bottom three arrowkeys.

Changing the up arrowkey might go against the gradient idea though. Would probably make it look off

The far right enter (in the numpad zone) already covers two rows with bright green, is this any better/worse? (It's not like that key will get color split.)

The numpad enter is at the very end of the board, which is better than breaking the gradient partway through. Plus, that enter key is only one key, no matter what it would cover two rows with one color, there's no other way to do it.

Hey guys, I appreciate the feedback.

I've been exchanging interesting emails with SP recently, and should hopefully have an exciting update soon.
However, as of right now I need to work on child kits, currently I have in mind the base kit (alphas + mods), numpad, nonstandard, ergodox, planck, and novelties. Any thoughts or recommendations for more kits I should include? Let me know if I'm missing something I should definitely have

I would imagine an ISO kit will be requested if not already included in one of the already noted kits.

All credit goes to Arhipio for designing the novelties.
The theme would go perfectly with the jelly key imo

Agreed, I also got a purple JellyKey constellation artisan and think it'll look great with this set (I actually bought all four of them and think they'd all look very cool with this set).

I like the Novelties a lot, though I liked the telescope one you designed too, did you scrap it for any particular reason or is it just missing from the current novelties picture?

That said, I don't see a 1.75u shift for the WhiteFox layouts on any of the child kits - in my opinion, which admittedly is biased because I own a WF already and have a second one coming from the latest batch for the office, you could just add in the 1.75u shift into the base kit given the keyboard's popularity as of late (1.5k~ sold first round, about the same for the second run); having to buy an entire non-standard modifier kit just for 1 key turns a lot of people off (myself included, even though I've done it before) so maybe it'd be nice to have the base be produced with 1 extra key if it doesn't completely skew the production costs and all that. It may be obsolete for people who do not own a WhiteFox or Tangsan style board but so are the TKL design ones for people with 60-70% layouts, etc.

Food for thought I suppose, I suggested this exact same thing in the SA Miami Dolch thread earlier and MacGruber (the creator) mentioned I was not the first person to request 1.75u accommodation so I'd imagine it may be worthwhile looking into at least.

I scrapped the telescope novelty just because I didn't like it as much as the constellations and I didn't want to have too many novelties. There were more constellations that Arhipio designed as well, but I decided to limit it to my 5 favorite.

As for the extra key, I'll make sure to see if adding one or two keys (I also don't have a stepped caps lock anywhere I realize) to the base kit would have any major impact on the price. It's only one or two more keys so I don't really see how it could have a major effect, but I would like to check if it would make more sense than just adding on to the non-standard kit

I decided to make the base kit TKL because I think it would be better to include the full gradient in one kit instead of breaking it apart. In my opinion this set is kinda meant to be bought as at least a TKL, but I can definitely see how having those extra keys would be a waste for someone with a 60-70%.

More thoughts on this would be great to hear

Ah, understandable. Yea the constellations look great and possibly better than the telescope yea, you chose the better ones too in my opinion.

I think making the base kit TKL is definitely the correct decision, I was not questioning that at all as I personally own TKLs myself (novatouch being the one I use the most), only reason I mentioned some of the keys going to "waste" for people with 60-70% was to make the point that including the 1.75u right shift for WhiteFox users is pretty much the same thing in terms of certain buyers not having a use for it.

Adding it to the non-standard kit is what most people did before at least but seeing as it's literally just the one key out of like 30 to 40, I feel that now with how many units of it are out in the wild already from the first round and how many will be making their way to the second round buyers before the end of the year adding it in to new sets base kits might be an interesting move by the creators. Maybe I'm just biased though, most of this is conjecture as it's obviously hard to predict how many WF users will be interested etc but yea, if you include it in the non-standard I'll definitely be buying it regardless!

Instead of Planck, can you make it 40% for all?  With the separate for Planck and 40%, I'm just concerned about it hitting MOQ otherwise.

The keyboards I currently use are reduced to a WhiteFox and a Novatouch (and my FC660C of course but that's irrelevant here) so to me the kits are perfectly fine as is, I have just ordered Evan's MiniVan 2 though from Massdrop earlier when the drop opened so the idea regarding 40% over just Planck may be smart, I don't know much about ≤50% layouts honestly. I like the idea you proposed of just re-labelling the 40% to alternate layout, most keys for other non-standard layouts are already covered.

Regarding checking with SP regarding cost effects of adding the three extra keys for the base kit, I hope it turns out for the best - wish it's doable to release it like that, perfect for my personal needs. Let us know when they give you an answer regarding that!

The Whitefox has some peculiarities also- not so sure that as is,  base + mods is going to fit it.   Packing all of those + 40% into one would definitely make the price skyrocket however.

Actually you're right, I forgot the vanilla layout was a thing (ISO is different too but that's a different kit all-together), that one uses 1x1 R1 right side mods. I was mostly thinking of the TrueFox and Aria seeing as those are supposedly the most popular and use full TKL mods as far as I'm aware (asides the rshift and the 1.5 backspace on the TF), Jack of All Trades is standard and I think the old winkeyless design they had for the 1st round will also be fine with just the base kit for this.

One small concern is still the light legends on the bottom row, I don't see it as a big deal, but let me know your issues with it. Yeah, the child kit renders are a bit harder to read because I put them on a white background, should've done something darker like the other renders

Oh damn, that's awesome, I'm already having to wait forever for a bunch of stuff so getting it in a month's time is refreshing. Plenty of time to replenish my wallet too then, just taken a big hit during September/October so having an extra month is relevant.

Can't wait to see what this looks like irl, congratulations on the project's success.

This is phenomenal news, congratulations!!! Especially good that it's KotM with the fast fulfilment that entails. Well done!  :thumb:

Thanks guys, I'm really excited this is finally happening.
I don't think the timing nor the store could be any more perfect.
Quick fulfillment, cheaper price, and a buffer month from the craziness of September, I'm glad it worked out this way

Would there be 1800 kits or blanks for a 1800 layout?

Do you have a permalink to one of those sets on KLE? I'd like to play around with them and see which ones I'd need to fill my Atomic.

EDIT: Nevermind, found this (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Signature_Plastics_ABS_colours).
Other question: Why does the planck set contain the left, down and right arrow? Those are already in the base set, so you could either remove them to make that set cheaper or replace them with more specific labels like "Meta" or a few blanks. I also think that the Planck set should have more blank keys like the ErgoDox one does.

I'm getting a lot of feedback on the child kits and changes I should make.
I had this IC open for a long while and nobody seemed to have any problems with the kits until now.
However, I did email SP to see if it's not too late to change some kits around, I'll try to incorporate as many changes as make sense

Pretty sure this happens in every GB.  You'll get "suggestions" even after your actual GB opens and you're taking orders -- long after any such feedback is useful.   :P

You should be OK to request changes right up until your GB start.  SP is pretty flexible, just remember it can be sometimes 48 hours or more to get a response from them.  Longer if you're going through a 3rd party vendor like Massdrop.

I updated the post with the finalized Alternate Layout kit. Should cover things like 40%'s and nonstandard keyboards, including the Tada68.
Any changes I want to make should be sent to SP by today, so let me know if anything absolutely necessary is missing, but I am pretty happy with how it is right now.

Looks all good to me, I appreciate the inclusion of the 3 non-standard keys in the base set too as I did when the IC was just starting, saves a lot of people buying a full child kit for one key!

Also, I missed the fact the legends will be GID until yesterday once I read the reddit thread - VERY excited.

So my wife saw these keys and wanted them. I explained to her they were just keys and she would need a keyboard to go with them so now she wants a keyboard. I havent even got my first mechanical keyboard but now thanks to these keys my wife wants one first. So my question as a noob is what keyboard to buy to match with these keys? The Leopold FC660C? Will the Leopold FC750R work also? Then I just wait a month for this to show up on pimp my keyboard site and it will be self explanatory what to buy?

If you want the cheapest option you should look at standardized boards, the MagicForce 68 whilst not the best one out there is definitely great value for the money (in my opinion), doesn't have a Function row however. It just depends on what sort of a layout she needs, if you're looking into Leopold boards then she probably likes TKLs, I think (you should confirm this) the 750R is fully standardized so that should work, if not then the Coolermaster Rapid-I is and is widely available. I'd prefer the 750R, Leopold's build quality is great, no backlighting though if that's at all relevant.

Do not buy the FC660C though, nor anything that says "Topre" or "capacitative" (what the C at the end stands for) - those are different switches with different stems, this key set (and 99% of others) will not fit them.

PS: If you get a standardized TKL board then it should be super easy, buy the base kit and you're g2g.

What about a 7u spacebar? 1u pipe/backslash? and stepped CTRL. show some love to the HHKB layout.

Sorry, I know how annoying that kind of stuff can get. I did only find out about it now, and I think as it comes closer to the buying stage, many other people will see it for the first time as well.
There's not much you can do against that, unfortunately.

I would still like to know why the Planck set has four arrows. The uparrow would be sufficient to modify the base set for planck use. Oh well, guess it's too late now.

Yeah that unfortunately happens with many group buys, especially as the buying time approaches.  You can't support every layout, and I think you've done a great job supporting as many as you have.

Really love how the whole thing came out, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

This is what I'll be going for. OLKB Atomic, "Borealis Sunset".
I'll need the Base, Planck, Numpad and Novelties kits to make it work, but hopefully it will look awesome then :)

Suddenly all the advantages of DSA are down the drain. Maybe a future re-run of this set could feature alternative layouts, but right now it makes sense to limit the amount of sets to hit the shipping date in November.

Something I forgot to mention/make clear: The set will come with scooped homing keys, I updated the base kit in the OP to reflect that.

Also, about the lack of some kits, PMK does have plans to keep adding stock of the set to their store past the month of November, so it could be possible that different kits could be added later on.
As for the initial sell, the kits I've made are what will be available, but I may ask in the future to add more.

I don't know any specific dates yet, and I'm not sure if I will before the set goes up. I don't expect it to sell out very quickly though, much slower than the grab bags do.

If you do miss out initially though, it will be restocked in the future so you should be able to get a set without the aftermarket

Ah damnit. I really want to pre-order this, but it would require so many sets that I'd pay 175€ incl. tax to fill my board, and then I'd still have a few mislabled keys. Maybe I'll just go for blanks instead. Can't wait to see all the pictures and then regret not getting it  :))

Glad to see it go live!  I am torn on this set for a few reasons.

  • I currently only have 60% keyboards and I really dig that function row color more than the bottom row light blue
  • I don't understand the glow in the dark text (when would you ever see it glowing?  Maybe if you turned off your computer and sit in a completely dark room?  I would think clear POM would have been a better choice.  Do you know if leds would shine through the legend material?
  • I'm not sure about the font.  I would have assumed that was placeholder font, but now I see it on PMK with the same legends.  Are the doing a custom font here or did they just not notice it was not Gorton Modified?

The glow in the dark text is more of a novelty than anything. Think of it as just a cool bonus on top of the gradient colorway.

As for the font, it is just the default font used in Keyboard Layout Editor. I made sure with SP that the font used will be the normal centered Gorton Modified font used in their other DSA/SA sets. I think the KLE font is fairly close to what the actual Gorton Modified looks like.

Yeah, sorry about that. Child kits are definitely something I need to improve on in the future, its real tough trying to satisfy everyone and I think a did neglect a few things I shouldn't have during the process of making this

Less than a month. This set is supposed to to ship this month and they still have to produce it, so my guess would be three weeks maximum.

I got an 84-key ps2avrGB from keyclack from here: https://www.keyclack.com/product/gb-ps2avrgb/

I'm assuming you're talking about the Sentraq S60-x RGB that's due this month? I'm on the for the GB too! I was curious how this would look on there. You're going to have to post some pics as soon as you get it together :)

Yup the Sentraq S60-x RGB. I'll definitely post some pics of the final product with the Borealis caps.

I got an 84-key ps2avrGB from keyclack from here: https://www.keyclack.com/product/gb-ps2avrgb/

Has a black top and blue bottom, gat blacks, and green LEDs in addition to the underglow. I've got terrible keys on it right now so I can't wait until Borealis comes in

Ah, definitely a solid build. It's going to look great! I wonder how the GITD text will look with RGB underglow. Could be pretty awesome. :)

Nice, glad to see more people who got into the GB as well. I can't wait to see pictures of all the builds. :D

The price was good for having RGB underglow. I've never built a board before but I ended up buying two of those, and at the same time got in a GB for two 60% Stainless Steel cases. Hoping to make those my first 2 custom boards later this month or next month. If the GITD text looks good with Borealis that could be my board for it. :)

Does anyone have a reference pic with all the novelties on the board? I'm kind of confused on how they go since, they are colored per layer.

I don't have a reference pic on hand, but I imagined the two purples and blue colors to go on the top row of your board, depending on size, and the bottom, 1.25u keys to go on the bottom row of your board.
I also more-so imagined someone using only a few novelties at once and switching them out every now and again, instead of using them all at once.

I admit it may have been better to do less number of constellations and more row colors so that they could be placed anywhere instead of the way I did it.
(All of my mistakes are being noted so that I can improve my sets in the future)

no worries man. It's a beautiful set and the novelties are awesome. I just wished they came in a full row like how carbon has the warning signs. would you also know what the price will be after the pre-order?

I'm not sure what PMK plans to do after the pre-order period ends. I imagine it won't be for sale until they make more stock down the line.
I also don't actually know what the price will be then, but I'm willing to bet it will be the same as now. All of that is up to PMK though

No problem at all. Still a very quick turnaround for this. I had a feeling we wouldn't be able to get all sets out the same month. xD

Directly from the PMK website:

As production time allows, we plan to keep the following sets in stock indefinitely:

Eve, Midnight, Deep Space, Green Tea, Dolch, Otaku, Quartz, Think Different, Jukebox, Hana, Granite, Stealth, Ice Cap, Industrial and Borealis.

Please do not email Melissa to find out when additional sets will be available. She will no longer be answering these emails. We will announce, either through an email or in "What's New", when sets will be available prior to putting them in inventory.

Looks like Borealis will be restocked in the future.

Super excited for this.

I was going to throw this on my fullsize, but I joined the RS96 buy on Massdrop, so when christmas is all done and the wallet loosens back up I'll have to buy the non-standard layout kit for the blank bottom row 1U so I can run the RS96 with the arrow keys.

Got these in last night and just busted out my YotG to test them out :D

[attach=1]
[attach=2]

Some Impressions:
- They are beautiful! Love the colorway - really pops against a white case
- The glow only lasts for a few minutes, and needs to be 'charged' with some pretty intense light
- I wish the spacebar had some type of GID feature
- I should have ordered the novelties kit  :p

Also, it looks like the set is back in stock at PMK!

Glad to hear the positivity over here.

Feel free to leave any feedback you guys might have, positive or negative. I've heard a lot of negativity, which is completely understandable given how experimental this set was. I'll use all I've learned from this set to improve my future sets.

Really glad most of you guys are happy with the purchase, and I'm really sorry for those that are dissapointed. I wanted this set to be as perfect as you guys did (if not more).

I personally love this set. Yeah the GID isn't very strong but that's just a bonus..... the alphas being hard to read isn't a negative for me either considering we are touch typers. If anything it just sits in that blurry line between visible alphas and blanks, and i happen to like that look.

Yeah, this set looks great. Mine just came in last night and I'm stoked. I really didn't even think about them being hard to read, haha. It's not hard for me, they look just like PBT+POM does. And most of us know how to touch type anyways so it's not like the legends make that much of a difference. Sure the GID doesn't last long, but I already knew that after getting some of the GID fallout caps. Also, if you have LED's they can light them up.

So I have no complaints here. Good job Jmeferlater.  :thumb:

That might have been the intent, and the plan changed because of other issues.  Without knowing what these other issues are, calling "liar" seems a bit extreme.

Fair enough, shouldn't call those said something but ended up could not reach their goals or keep their promises because of many reasons and excuses, as long as what they said is not intended to deceive.
But how do we call those?

By the way this set's DSA ABS arrow keys have alignment issues, at least for those that I have.
But I really like this set, but it seriously lacks support for many layout options out there, given it is already a very flexible DSA set.
