I think this is a pretty interesting take on a row-by-row colorway, really cool color choices.
Have you spoken with SP about making a set entirely with GID legends and with that many colors? I'm not sure how either of those would impact the price/feasibility of the set.
Also, if you need to see an example of a GID legend, one of the lotuses from Commando 23 has a GID legend (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45655.0). I can take some macro shots of one of mine later if it would help.
So, are the legends white or yellow? they seem to differ from the two versions of colors you posted.

Thanks, I haven't spoken to SP yet (is there a specific email I would need to contact them at?), but I have spoken to user livingspeedbump about the number of colors and he said it should be no problem. No idea about the GID though.
A closer shot of that specific key would be great.

Not sure about who to speak with at SP or even what their schedule looks like with all the GBs and ICs popping up right now.

So, if you saw my comment on reddit I said it couldn't be done. But I'm an idiot and figured out a way to take a pic of it glowing. http://imgur.com/PL3QNhU

To take the picture I had to shine my phone's flash on the key for 10 seconds or so then quickly take a picture with the flash off. However, the GID does not last very long, within a few seconds it goes from fairly bright to too dim to take a picture of. It's also pretty faint looking to the eye in the dark. I don't know much about GID materials, but this keycap is fairly old (as far as modern SA keycaps go) at about three years old, so maybe it's not as strong as it was originally...
Very nice looking set. Some great shades of blue in this set.
Registered here to say I'm interested. I loved the idea in the original Reddit post and would love to see this get made!

Hey guys, here's the first real attempt at a novelty for the set. It is the constellation Cassiopeia, which can be seen in the northern sky.
The design was done by user Arhipio, he has a bunch of other ideas too, so let us know here what you think.
Feel free to share any ideas you have for a novelty as well, I'm really bad at coming up with this stuff.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/ZQ1HwOB.png)
I messed around with his design a little and probably made the lines too thin.
We can also do some more complicated constellations if this one is too simple.

IMO that's a fantastic idea for a novelty. +1 on this.

Oooo. It'd be really cool if the novelties were a bunch of different constellations. I'm not a big fan of DSA but this design and colorway has me very interested.
Constellation novelties are a great idea. Keep in mind that SP has some line weight and corner radii requirements for custom legends. It looks like you might already be aware. :thumb:
Love the new constellations. Have you consider playing with the weights of the points? I know some stars are brighter than other perhaps it would look cool if those points were bigger.

Only set I've ever liked with those "row gradient" layouts - I tend to dislike them all, but this one is lovely and I'll definitely buy one regardless of profile (I do like DSA though) if/once they become available.Thank you, I'm glad to hear that.
Hey guys. Just heard back from SP, there is no problem with using glow in the dark legends for all the keys, which is great to hear.
However, there might be a problem with readability on the bottom row, so I updated the OP with renders with the correct legend colors to give an idea of what it would look like.
Let me know any concerns you might have about the lack of contrast in the bottom row.
You're doing god's work. I don't like the bottom row color it as much as the last render, but it does increase contrast with the other colors, which is interesting in and of itself.
I was looking at the wrong pic at the top, don't mind me ~_~
EDIT, actual feedback: I wonder if the "up" arrowkey would look better matching the bottom three arrowkeys.
The far right enter (in the numpad zone) already covers two rows with bright green, is this any better/worse? (It's not like that key will get color split.)
Those novelties are amazing.
I really hope this'll go nice with the purple Constellation Jelly Key

Agreed, I also got a purple JellyKey constellation artisan and think it'll look great with this set (I actually bought all four of them and think they'd all look very cool with this set).
I like the Novelties a lot, though I liked the telescope one you designed too, did you scrap it for any particular reason or is it just missing from the current novelties picture?
That said, I don't see a 1.75u shift for the WhiteFox layouts on any of the child kits - in my opinion, which admittedly is biased because I own a WF already and have a second one coming from the latest batch for the office, you could just add in the 1.75u shift into the base kit given the keyboard's popularity as of late (1.5k~ sold first round, about the same for the second run); having to buy an entire non-standard modifier kit just for 1 key turns a lot of people off (myself included, even though I've done it before) so maybe it'd be nice to have the base be produced with 1 extra key if it doesn't completely skew the production costs and all that. It may be obsolete for people who do not own a WhiteFox or Tangsan style board but so are the TKL design ones for people with 60-70% layouts, etc.
Food for thought I suppose, I suggested this exact same thing in the SA Miami Dolch thread earlier and MacGruber (the creator) mentioned I was not the first person to request 1.75u accommodation so I'd imagine it may be worthwhile looking into at least.
I scrapped the telescope novelty just because I didn't like it as much as the constellations and I didn't want to have too many novelties. There were more constellations that Arhipio designed as well, but I decided to limit it to my 5 favorite.
As for the extra key, I'll make sure to see if adding one or two keys (I also don't have a stepped caps lock anywhere I realize) to the base kit would have any major impact on the price. It's only one or two more keys so I don't really see how it could have a major effect, but I would like to check if it would make more sense than just adding on to the non-standard kit
I decided to make the base kit TKL because I think it would be better to include the full gradient in one kit instead of breaking it apart. In my opinion this set is kinda meant to be bought as at least a TKL, but I can definitely see how having those extra keys would be a waste for someone with a 60-70%.
More thoughts on this would be great to hear
Updated base kit to include an Esc for lower row, a 1.75u shift, and a stepped caps lock
Updated OP with rough draft of child kits. Let me know what you think.
Updated base kit to include an Esc for lower row, a 1.75u shift, and a stepped caps lock
That's so sick, thank you, I actually have a use for all of those (except the Esc potentially as I'll use one of the JellyKeys constellations there probably). I'm sure a lot more people will appreciate it!
Updated OP with rough draft of child kits. Let me know what you think.
Instead of Planck, can you make it 40% for all? With the separate for Planck and 40%, I'm just concerned about it hitting MOQ otherwise.

I forgot to mention that I haven't yet checked with SP about the cost effects of adding those keys. But I would like to push to have as many keys in the base kit as possible, so unless there's a big issue with it, this should be how the base kit is.Updated OP with rough draft of child kits. That's a good idea, I'll definitely consider it. My only concern is, would people who only own a Planck be willing to spend more for those extra keys?
The keyboards I currently use are reduced to a WhiteFox and a Novatouch (and my FC660C of course but that's irrelevant here) so to me the kits are perfectly fine as is, I have just ordered Evan's MiniVan 2 though from Massdrop earlier when the drop opened so the idea regarding 40% over just Planck may be smart, I don't know much about ≤50% layouts honestly. I like the idea you proposed of just re-labelling the 40% to alternate layout, most keys for other non-standard layouts are already covered. The Whitefox has some peculiarities also- not so sure that as is, base + mods is going to fit it. Packing all of those + 40% into one would definitely make the price skyrocket however.
Regarding checking with SP regarding cost effects of adding the three extra keys for the base kit, I hope it turns out for the best - wish it's doable to release it like that, perfect for my personal needs. Let us know when they give you an answer regarding that!

Edited OP to change 40℅ kit to alternate Layout kit. I just think that makes the most senseVery nice not as many keys a I thought it would be.

This looks absolutely stunning...guess I'll have to get a TKL now :'(
Agreed that the bottom looks fine per the renders. The other preview seems hard to read but I'm guessing those are a little less color accurate than the render themselves.

Any uodate? :( or is the dream dead
I read that way too fast, and my brain somehow heard "Or is this dream food". Which I kinda like.
But same question here.
Love the novelties, but I'd like than better if the stars were bigger personally. This might actually get me to break down and buy another dsa set which I swore I wouldn't do.
Hey guys, it's been a while since my last update to this thread, but I finally have some awesome news to share..
DSA Borealis will be available for purchase on Pimpmykeyboard in November, as part of their Keyset of the Month!
This basically means that you'll be able to get your keyset in the same month that you buy it, something that is becoming more and more rare these days.
The current plan is to have pre-orders on pmk early November and then have the sets be ready to ship by the end of November.
I don't know about prices, but I can't imagine them being more expensive than most other DSA sets, especially since there is no third-party vendor adding on costs, as PMK is just the storefront for SP.

This is phenomenal news, congratulations!!! Especially good that it's KotM with the fast fulfilment that entails. Well done! :thumb:
Oh damn, that's awesome, I'm already having to wait forever for a bunch of stuff so getting it in a month's time is refreshing. Plenty of time to replenish my wallet too then, just taken a big hit during September/October so having an extra month is relevant.
Can't wait to see what this looks like irl, congratulations on the project's success.

I'm getting a lot of feedback on the child kits and changes I should make.
I had this IC open for a long while and nobody seemed to have any problems with the kits until now.
However, I did email SP to see if it's not too late to change some kits around, I'll try to incorporate as many changes as make sense
So my wife saw these keys and wanted them. I explained to her they were just keys and she would need a keyboard to go with them so now she wants a keyboard. I havent even got my first mechanical keyboard but now thanks to these keys my wife wants one first. So my question as a noob is what keyboard to buy to match with these keys? The Leopold FC660C? Will the Leopold FC750R work also? Then I just wait a month for this to show up on pimp my keyboard site and it will be self explanatory what to buy?
I updated the post with the finalized Alternate Layout kit. Should cover things like 40%'s and nonstandard keyboards, including the Tada68.
Any changes I want to make should be sent to SP by today, so let me know if anything absolutely necessary is missing, but I am pretty happy with how it is right now.

sigh... :(
I updated the base kit in the OP to reflect that.

Is there any specific date we can expect the offer to start on PMK? I really don't want to miss out on this like I did on the last grabbag sale.I don't know any specific dates yet, and I'm not sure if I will before the set goes up. I don't expect it to sell out very quickly though, much slower than the grab bags do.

Glad to see it go live! I am torn on this set for a few reasons.
- I currently only have 60% keyboards and I really dig that function row color more than the bottom row light blue
- I don't understand the glow in the dark text (when would you ever see it glowing? Maybe if you turned off your computer and sit in a completely dark room? I would think clear POM would have been a better choice. Do you know if leds would shine through the legend material?
- I'm not sure about the font. I would have assumed that was placeholder font, but now I see it on PMK with the same legends. Are the doing a custom font here or did they just not notice it was not Gorton Modified?
Ah damnit. I really want to pre-order this, but it would require so many sets that I'd pay 175€ incl. tax to fill my board, and then I'd still have a few mislabled keys. Maybe I'll just go for blanks instead. Can't wait to see all the pictures and then regret not getting it :))
Gonna pick this up for my future 96 key board (whenever that will be). How long will the preorder be up?

Yeah, sorry about that. Child kits are definitely something I need to improve on in the future, its real tough trying to satisfy everyone and I think a did neglect a few things I shouldn't have during the process of making this

I'm assuming you're talking about the Sentraq S60-x RGB that's due this month? I'm on the for the GB too! I was curious how this would look on there. You're going to have to post some pics as soon as you get it together :)

Does anyone have a reference pic with all the novelties on the board? I'm kind of confused on how they go since, they are colored per layer.

I don't have a reference pic on hand, but I imagined the two purples and blue colors to go on the top row of your board, depending on size, and the bottom, 1.25u keys to go on the bottom row of your board.
I also more-so imagined someone using only a few novelties at once and switching them out every now and again, instead of using them all at once.
I admit it may have been better to do less number of constellations and more row colors so that they could be placed anywhere instead of the way I did it.
(All of my mistakes are being noted so that I can improve my sets in the future)

no worries man. It's a beautiful set and the novelties are awesome. I just wished they came in a full row like how carbon has the warning signs. would you also know what the price will be after the pre-order?

Update from SP taken from the listing on pmk:This is great news, thanks for the update :thumb:
"Production Update: Unfortunately we are running about two weeks late with this keyset. We don't expect to start shipping Borealis until the week of December 11th."
Wanted to make sure everyone saw this. Should definitely get these before Christmas if this remains true
Update from SP taken from the listing on pmk:No problem at all. Still a very quick turnaround for this. I had a feeling we wouldn't be able to get all sets out the same month. xD

this set is hot, i wish I had the funds to pick one up :(
Super excited for this.
I was going to throw this on my fullsize, but I joined the RS96 buy on Massdrop, so when christmas is all done and the wallet loosens back up I'll have to buy the non-standard layout kit for the blank bottom row 1U so I can run the RS96 with the arrow keys.

I can send you an extra. You can pm me about the details :)
I got an update on my order. Got tracking#!
Glad to hear the positivity over here.
Feel free to leave any feedback you guys might have, positive or negative. I've heard a lot of negativity, which is completely understandable given how experimental this set was. I'll use all I've learned from this set to improve my future sets.
Really glad most of you guys are happy with the purchase, and I'm really sorry for those that are dissapointed. I wanted this set to be as perfect as you guys did (if not more).

I personally love this set. Yeah the GID isn't very strong but that's just a bonus..... the alphas being hard to read isn't a negative for me either considering we are touch typers. If anything it just sits in that blurry line between visible alphas and blanks, and i happen to like that look.
Did Signature Plastics announced DSA Borealis is selected as one of their stable item in their long term inventory?
In just one year, they totally removed it from their inventory.

Total liar.

That might have been the intent, and the plan changed because of other issues. Without knowing what these other issues are, calling "liar" seems a bit extreme.
... As production time allows, we plan to keep the following sets in stock indefinitely:
Eve, Midnight, Deep Space, Green Tea, Dolch, Otaku, Quartz, Think Different, Jukebox, Hana, Granite, Stealth, Ice Cap, Industrial and Borealis. ...
