We have received a total of 309 orders, and currently 309invoices were sent and 257 have paid.
Please kindly make the payment as soon as possible so we can get started with payment to factory and production.

After that, colors and specifications cannot be changed.
Further, we will collect shipping cost right before we ship out, and address changes can be made at that time.
If no address change request is made, we will ship to the PayPal address on the invoice.
Again, thank you so much and Go Space65!

SPACE65 was inspired by two things significant to me that happened in 1977: the Space Probe Voyager 1 and the Personal Computer Apple II.

It has been almost a year as I work on this Space65 project.
Although the front-end side has been designed since the beginning (after all, Apple II was the inspiration), lots of details have changed and been finetuned.
In order to make the bottom feel like Voyager 1, to resemble the airless and emptiness in the space...
I have been deliberating on the bottom design, with the objective that Space65 looks concise and integrated, removing the weight and blocking the screw position.
Fortunately, the final result is nearly perfect (after all, perfection is always the next time), and I feel very proud of this product.

To put things into perspective, when I was young, my father showed me a picture of the famous "Dark Blue Spot" taken by Voyager 1, 6.4 billion kilometers away from the earth.
I recall, it was a really small picture.
I was so young then, and tried to find the earth for a long time, until he said, "You see, this little dot is actually the earth."
Fast forward more than 20 years, now I have grown up, every time tried to catch that moment in my memory lane, I tremble, thinking that how little the earth is, and how little we are.
Now I can understand that the earth was as small as a speckle of dust in the universe, I am more impressed by the perseverance and bravery of Voyager 1.
To pay tribute to Voyager 1, I designed an RGB light band on the left side of Space65.
When the power is switched on, it will shine in that inconspicuous position, like the sparkle of Voyager 1.

【PS: Whenever I turn on Roger Zelazny’s science fiction "For a Breath I Tarry," I instantly think of Voyager 1. I would aspiringly hope that she will become a human being by exploring and learning, just like Frost, the protagonist in the book.】

Those are my personal stories that inspired the concept and design of Space65. Let's take a look at it now.

But i have to join this one

A bid sad that there is no Gold/Brass option for the badge.
I like the look of it with the black like on this render quite alot.

Probably in for dark blue with brass nameplate.

Can we get clarification on what all is included with the base kit?

If we opt not to have the RGB strip on the side, is the bottom that we get solid, or is the hole just covered with an insert or something?

In that case, it's just a simple upper and lower cover structure. There will be no holes in the side.

The case was originally not designed to work with holtites, the lowest end of the pin to the case is 0.8mm. I have not tested

Hand polishing is really too tired. And the scrap rate is so high that it's impossible to mass produce.Sorry for that...

They will be like the ladder option you mentioned. They are cut into the frame as opposed to etched like the initial prototype.

Wondering the same thing. It's the only thing missing for full ISO support, since it already supports ISO enter. Would be an insta-buy if split left shift was supported.

Same here, going by the plate design, the keyboard doesn't look like it supports split left shift from the prototype pictures.

They would have to modify the plate and the PCB designs to accommodate this if they were to fit it in, maybe that's all been finalised.

PCB supports split left shift.
At that time, I wanted to make a split left shift. But my partners don't think it's necessary. So I thought he didn't do it. As a result, I just opened the picture to see that it supports split left shift. But he's done it.

Can one upgrade to a brass badge? (W/o getting the included aluminum one also?)

Asking to keep price down since I wouldn't want carbon fiber or aluminum badge.

Well, there is no support for split left shift. Sorry for that.. :(

Without the split left shift you might as-well only do a ANSI layout as the majority of ISO users would need a split left shift.
So most likely no one from the EU etc would not be able to join :(

Haha or that yeah. But it is a missed opportunity for both side sadly.
Though it's a minor detail I guess (at least for me now that I'm used to ANSI).

Edit: or not, it seems ISO support has been fixed on the plate, cheers for you then and all ISO users ;)

If this image shows the final plate, I don't think the plate supports it: https://i.imgur.com/iH2L6IA.jpg
The hole needs to be a bit bigger on the right hand side, like this plate: https://imgur.com/a/6UVqnw2 (image borrowed from here (https://sentraq.com/products/60-aluminum-plate?variant=10596342599))

But this is just a minor edit of the plate, so I hope it might be possible to add this change.

EDIT: Here's an image of a sample carbon fiber plate I found in the album, which seems to have the same cutout for the left shift (which doesn't support ISO shift): https://i.imgur.com/okCKcro.jpg

Sorry for that, its my mistake.
And I slightly modify the left shift position of the plate,so that can support 1.25+1 spli.

This is my updated rendering.
The plate in this figure is compatible with splitting left shift.
This is also the final version of the plate.

Finally, thank you very much for your careful observation.

I think thw images do not show the final plate, as he said they support split space and none of the plates shows this.

Having typed on a carbon fiber plate before, I have to say it is my favorite plate material so far.  Really nice sound and feel.  You get the acoustics of plastic with the feel of something more solid like aluminum.  Cool stuff.  Of course, if you want a heavier board with more dampened acoustics, you should probably buy a brass plate.

Hi potter. I think this is true from the picture but does it only support 2.25/1.25/2.75 split space? And not support 2.75/1.25/2.25 space. I thought from IC you said it will support both, but from picture it only looks like one style. I am hoping for 2.75/1.25 style. Can you confirm - thank you.

I could also better use silver with Hyperfuse. I wish I could just buy two top cases.

For those interested in possible mil max sockets, it’s not guaranteed it will work but here is some info:

Clearance between switch pin and bottom case: 0.8mm
Switch pin through hole diameter: 1.5mm

Hello. Is there any chance we can buy extra top plates? Particularly because all the colors are great. My ideal would probably be a base kit in silver, with extra top plates in blue & black

You can in the order form.

I read your question wrong. That’d be cool if you could order extras.

Not that I can see. Extra badge, plate, and PCB but no extra top case.

Hi,

Is this a Top Cover mount PCB Plate? Is it enough screw holes on the Plate?
Cause from what i see, the screw holes are only located on the left, right and bottom of the Plate.
Will the number row have enough support, since there is no screws to hold on to.

I love to join, but need to know if the keyboard will hold strong, without flimsy feel when bottom out.

Thanks.

Two on the sides and 3 along the bottom, but none on the top. Carbon fiber is very strong though, so this should be plenty of support. I wouldn't worry about it being flimsy.

I would always do it for custom PCBs. Otherwise you might and with just a case. Accidents happen. Also resale is easier as people might want a untouched PCB.

I'd always do it, get a second plate too, so you can build two basically (e.g., 1 linear board and 1 tactile board). I am going for CF default for holy pandas and brass for a good linear (tealios or tangerines).

So, this is the latest render for the plate, meaning the bottom part, not only supported by 3 screws, but also the plate get sandwich between the aluminum top & Bottom cover.
This looks better than previous render as attached.

One more question, how big is the gap between the lowest part of PCB bottom with the highest part of Bottom Alum cover.

Thanks.

Great, it is a tight gap, so in case the plate got Flimsy. Can just add something underneath to fill the gap. Thanks @oldcat.

@airpotter can i suggest one more design alteration. The bottom rubber feet. Since this is custom, and we're gonna open and close this baby a lot. Is it possible that the rubber feet has it's own seat, rather than covering the screw holes. Believe the rubber feet will loose it's sticky/ glue if we open it alot.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think I spotted an error in the hydrogen atom icon. Isn't the right side of the icon supposed to show the electron spinning in the opposition direction? As it is currently, the icon shows only one state instead of two states like the Voyager record cover.

Well, in order to ensure the aesthetic appearance of the bottom case.

I specially covered the screw holes with footpads.

At the same time, the screw hole is just at the edge of the rubber feet.

I've tested it before, so it doesn't affect the removal of the screw.

Because it's easy to twist the screw if you just move the rubber foot a little bit.

Thanks.

It is top mount yes, And the revised plate has holes in the middle as well. Actually even with the middle screws it is very firm, not flimsy at all. But I will take a picture of the new plate soon (or Potter may be able to share soon).

I love to join, but need to know if the keyboard will hold strong, without flimsy feel when bottom out.

Thanks.

It is top mount yes, And the revised plate has holes in the middle as well. Actually even with the middle screws it is very firm, not flimsy at all. But I will take a picture of the new plate soon (or Potter may be able to share soon).

Yes, good to hear for revision. Look forward for the new plate design. Thks.

Here you go, thanks bro.

Black top
Red bottom

That's actually quite light. (I take it thats with the carbon fiber plate tho?) I imagine a brass plate/badge will increase it a smidge. :)

It actually doesn’t feel light, probably similar as a Canoe.

I have a few Alf boards those were super heavy haha.

Yes adding brass plate and possibly brass badge will increase weight a lot. Carbon fiber is lightest material on keyboard  even lighter than PC I think

(Attachment Link)

Looks very good on the bottom plate design, there is more area to support and contact with top cover.
However, for the left and right sides, can the design be alter to be similar to the bottom, or at least having wider area surrounding the screw hole, to assure more support and contact area with the top cover.

Thank you

I have only one experience with SF Express, but my packet went to Netherlands first using PostNL when it entered Europe (I am in France) and then it was my local regular postal service.

But for me it is taxed for sure anyway. EMS, local post, UPS or whatever. It is really rare I don't get taxed no matter who it is.

Thanks, if it's the regular post then it depends on the value that was declared and on luck. Worst case is 19% VAT on the full value. Anyway, if this KB turns out as awesome as the pictures suggest it will be worth it.

Report progress.
SPACE65 can complete 120 sets of CNC processing this weekend, then go to the radium logo, and then go to the anodization.
After the cartons are processed, the weight can be counted and the express delivery fee can be charged. Then they are distributed in batches.😁

There might be extras. Potter made extras to make sure if there are issues he can replace them. If QC all good and all goes well, he will sell those extras he made.

Airpotter said that it would ship in about 3 months so it seems to be going right on track with that estimate. I'd expect that list + sorting/packaging to take about a month to complete.

Please join the gray discord. Occasionally buyers sell their spots but go very quickly. The extras will be used for potential customer service issues, and if no issues they will be available after the GB completes.

Potter said 165 sets CNC done.
waiting for anodization, PCB, box, etc.

Man, progress is screaming along! I'm so excited!

Odd choice to have the plates machined though... laser/waterjet cut would be quite a lot quicker and is almost always cheaper. Not complaining, just think it is an odd choice (as someone who deals with metal manufacturing on a daily basis)

I get lasercut parts ordered all the time that are within +-0.001" tolerance for thinner metal. Guess it just depends on the vendor. Like I said, for the customer's standpoint it doesn't matter  ;D

AFAIK only gray color anodization is not completed, so we are almost crossing the finish line.
Airpotter said if the flood does not retreat in a week he will transport them to a sister anodization shop in a different town to finish the gray anodization.

I believe only the capslock indicator LED might have a minor issue (+ - reversed). Merlin hasnt had time to fix it yet but it should be an easy fix when people get their boards.

If there is someone interested, I am considering to offer my spot and have it shipped directly to whoever is interested - IF the GB runners are okay with that.

I've ordered an all black cases with LED strip, brass plate and badge +extra pcb (see my username entry in the order form here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vTt2DgINy9JdK7nGAH7svz5M932Ysz-ptyz5ce9CxZogXhqym1uNc6ODGaRNME7dse_CAmoMifwp6Qh/pubhtml)).

We'd appreciate you could wait until you receive the board to trade it on r/mm. I am sure you won't have a problem. Potter has over 400 Space65 to ship and trading to someone else at this time makes it very prone to shipping error. He has been sorting boards for 3 days.

Shipping address change is limited to your own address at this point (please send a discord DM to him, receiver's name needs to be the same at least). If he had agreed to change shipping address for you in the past, it should already have been recorded by him.

Wow, 88.20 USD to Romania. I guess the package is quite heavy.

There's a calculator on the SF Express website:
http://www.sf-express.com/sg/en/dynamic_function/price/

If you select some city in China, your country and 3 kg the price for SF Standard Express(International)(Package) matches the one on the invoice pretty well.

Count yourself lucky, its $50 to ship a base kit to the Philippines. Quite expensive considering the two countries share international waters. :))
Hopefully, future GBs will have the option to use DHL which is around half the price from my experience.

Any word on actual shipping to the USA? Invoice was paid May 26 with expectations for packages to go out within a week or so.

I'll need to request a change of address soon if estimated shipping time is a total mystery.

Should be happening soon, the test shipments were confirmed to have reached their destination, last we heard was potter would begin shipment after the 1-day holiday in China which was a few days ago. I’m unsure of if he plans on sending out address confirmation emails before shipping but I remember there being talks about that as well.

We started shipping after a test batch. And the first batch of 60+ are out with carrier SF.

Space65 with brass badges will be shipped later after QC of reworked brass badges is completed and passed.

For those receiving the board, before soldering, please test the PCB using tweezers to make sure all keys work to trigger a keypress (except the Fn in an ANSI layout). If there are issues with the PCB using the tweezer approach, pls contact @demo in discord or wechat group.

Config.qmk.fm has the Space65 firmware (https://config.qmk.fm/#/gray_studio/space65/LAYOUT), please follow standard approaches of flashing QMK firmware introduced by mechmerlin and others. If you have questions, please reach out for help in QMK discord or Gray Studio discord. Or, if you prefer using the kbfirmware website (https://kbfirmware.com/), attached is the json file (do not use this for QMK website).

All my VPNs are banned in China to use Discord. Logging onto Geekhack takes 30 mins and it breaks every minute.

Please join wechat group and reach out to me directly if you have an urgent request. If there is no urgent request, please kindly wait a bit more patiently. I may not be able to view your geekhack pm until after chinese ban of using VPN.

Thank you.

Just my personal experience, but for most of my overseas packages that aren't the big-3 companies (DHL, Fedex, UPS), I use 17track
https://www.17track.net/en
It usually does a good job.

I'm excited to see these start getting built :)

I got the blue, and I can't wait to pair it with GMK Voyage! (In IC right now)

I usually just use this SF official tracking site, put in tracking number and click “查询”
http://www.sf-express.com/cn/sc/dynamic_function/waybill/

Or this english site sometimes not very responsive:

Your PayPal shipping bill should update with a tracking number once it's shipped. And you should get an email from PayPal to inform you of the update. At least that's what I've read on Discord. Mine hasn't shipped yet either (and I didn't pick the brass badge) so I can't confirm any of it but it sounds right.

The brass badges have finished so shipping should commence now.

Odd. It appeared to work briefly as QMK toolbox picked it up but Windows then did its "installing device drivers etc" then toolbox lost it. Since then I've not been able to get it to work again.

I think you need to do it while plugged in, rather than while plugging in.

That's what I did after your suggestion. It's as if it wiped the escape binding once windows installed the drivers for the board or something.

I'll try again later today

This is all very odd. I connected the keyboard to my macbook and it picked-up it was available to flash there. I tried with my hex file (created from config.qmk.fm) and it errored with "see --debug=51 or greater for more information". After that the board was stuck in bootloader mode (even after being disconnected and reconnected). I had to load the default hex file back into it to get the board working again but now it won't go back into bootloader mode and the macbook doesn't pick it up either.

I've never gotten along with QMK :(

Ok I've figured out the bootloader mode issue you may all want to keep in mind.

It appears that the firmware pre-loaded on the pcb uses the mod+esc to enter bootloader mode but if you load the default firmware from git it changes it to holding escape during connecting your keyboard.

Now I just need to build a hex file that actually works....

Got my Space65 yesterday! Was super excited... so excited, in fact, that I soldered all my switches on without testing the PCB. Turns out my `\`, up, and down keys don't function (not even with tweezers on the PCB). I have a second PCB which does appear to work, but all of my switches (and thus my plate) are now on the first PCB. Re-flashing the firmware doesn't fit, and I can't reset the EEPROM without getting this error:

Code: [Select]
>>> dfu-programmer atmega32u4 flash --force --eeprom /Applications/QMK Toolbox.app/Contents/Resources/reset.eep
    0%                            100%  Programming 0x80 bytes...
    [ X  ERROR
Memory write error, use debug for more info.

Soooo I guess what I'm saying is make sure everyone checks their PCBs before you start soldering, because I just got totally hosed.

Sorry to hear this. Not sure what's caused the issues with the keys, but I've been informed the eeprom issue may be due to QMK Toolbox - apparently you should try being on version 0.0.9?

Okay, I've solved the problem thanks to some input from some folks on Discord.

For anyone else that experiences this, if you are using screw-in stabs, the screws will short on the backspace key, which will prevent the pipe, up, and down keys from functioning. Here is a picture that highlights the issue:

If you have a thin plastic or rubber washer, that should work, as would kapton or electrical tape. Once I resolved this short, my three keys started functioning again.

Anyone with a brass plate having an issue getting their case closed tight? I keep getting a gap on top and bottom of my board. Carbon plate closes up just fine.

I am. Seems like the brass plate is just a hair too thick. After screwing the brass plate in, I can feel the brass plate is slightly higher than the top plate (especially in the corners) by running my fingers across the edges where the brass plate meets the top plate. When I screw the top and bottom plates together with the brass plate installed, there is definitely a slight gap between the top and bottom plates.

Has anyone had any luck with the brass plate? Mine also doesn’t sit flush with it. Along the edges there is a ridge in a few places maybe from the machining? Since the ridges are on the back side of the plate I was planning on taking a grinder or file to them tomorrow to knock them off. Not sure if the plate is too thick overall or if the ridges will solve it.

Update: the plate is not brass. I ground the ridge down and then the brass dipped coating chipped away and now it’s all peely looking. Maybe it’s copper underneath? I can’t tell

The plate is PVD coated (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_vapor_deposition) brass. The coating you see is PVD, then you have the raw brass underneath.

It’s very subtle. since it’s a sandwich plate when you fully install it and then screw the case together it seems ok except if you look at the side you can see the brass plate showing through the seam

You can see the brass peeking thru. Also it doesn't feel as sturdy when picked up due to the gaps on both sides. It's kind of hard to explain but it definitely feels 'incomplete' when picking up and putting down.

I installed the CF plate and it definitely fits better - there is no gap. Btw, the shine between the top and bottom is not from the brass plate but from light shining through. So if the CF plate did not fit well, you would also see light coming through.

My brass plate fit fine... there was no gap when installed. However, when I put the brass badge on there, it created a tiny gap between the two halves of the board. Aluminum badge works fine. But if I don't put any badge on, it seals up tight all the way around with the brass plate.

Wondering if the manufacturer that did the plates had any kind of thickness quality control...

I screwed the case together without the badge in and I still have a slight gap between the case in the middle. It’s probably about 0.3mm

The thickness of the brass plate varies between 1.5 and 1.9mm on some sides. The carbon plate is a constant 1.5mm.
My guess would be that the coating dried unevenly. Where the plates hanging while drying? (all guesses, don't know the process)

I also think the carbon is softer so it allows for some compression

Anyone make contact regarding the brass plate? Not sure if I should just chalk it up as a loss

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Nope. I emailed Potter about two+ weeks ago. Still no response. I'll follow up soon.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Carbon fiber is not very compressible... I think it is just a proper thickness for the case design, and has the exact same thickness all over (as opposed to the brass which apparently varies).

At least you guys got your kits. Mine is still in China because DHL does not deliver individual orders in Russia and Potter stopped answering in WeChat a few days ago.

UPD: Got a responce from Potter with an EMS track number finally  :) Second attempt.

Did you changed anything in the code for middle key in the split space layout to work? For me none of the pads in the middle trigger anything. :-(

I reached out to oldcat on discord today (he's a mod for the GrayStudio discord) and he said he will try to get a hold of Potter and let him know about this issue. Apparently, the best way to reach Potter is through WeChat. However, I can't even install it because it requires verification by a current wechat user and I do not know any. It really should not be this difficult to get in contact with someone running the groupbuy. If any of you guys with brass plate issues has access to WeChat, it would be super helpful if you could join Potter's group if you have not already done so and try to reach out to him that way. I have the QR code if anyone needs it.

Just as a heads up, if you ask in the #space65 discord channel I'm sure there are people who can verify you.
The situation isn't ideal, but as Potter is a resident in China and thus has access issues due to the Great Firewall, WeChat is really the only communication service he can use without a lengthy process. Previously he was able to access Geekhack and Discord without too much issue, but it appears it has become harder.

Just the top light works.  All three side lights do not.  LEDs are pretty hardy, so I'm wondering if it's the connection.

That is exactly what I am seeing as well.  only 1 of the 6 lights is working.  I was thinking perhaps the LED went bad, but it is exceptionally unlikely that we would both have the same LED go out.  That means perhaps a weak connection?

Find me on discord if you want to try to solve this together.

I would suggest to plug in USB 3.0 port and see if the leds all turn on, mine was on but so dim when connected to USB 2.0 although max out the brightness, then switch to 3.0 and it resolved. Hope this help.

With this kind of attitude AIRPORTER should not be running GBs at all. He produced parts which do not work properly. Interestingly the shipping just happened after the Paypal protection runs out... I hope nobody runs into a AIRPORTER GB where for example the PCB does not work.

Sure I can now spend time to work on the plate, but this attitude pisses me off. Luckily the payment for shipping is not that long ago, so we might have some leverage to at least get a partial refund for the plate.

I tested  polished some palte, It can be use,but not beautiful.
So if you don't want to grind  it(after all, it's my fault),You can give me feedback by email.

I need to count the numbers first, then make new brass palte.
Of course, you can choose to refund, but because it took more than six months, I couldn't get a refund to you. But you invoice directly to this mailbox.

In order to ensure no more delay, I found three factories to make brass accessories, but because the order volume is relatively small, so the construction period is longer. I'll go back to the factory to follow up the progress in a few days.

Your package is currently being held at a UPS store.

Potter has been trying to reach you via Email but cannot get a response.

Please either check your email, or you can message me with your order number/email address if you think it is you, and i will reach out to potter for you.

Thanks.

"Alas, it failed again.
Because the plating thickness is really difficult to control, the bare positioning plate is 1.3mm thick now, but it is found that it is still about 1.6-1.8 thick, or slightly thick.

I really don't know how to control his thickness at about 1.5mm now."

Sounds like they tried another run and the plates still came back too thick.

I would be fine with a non coated plate. Other GB also just offer sandblasted ones and I would be fine with it.

Is the plate actually solid brass? I sanded the corners and the material looked copper in color

Just got a DHL shipping notification based on my original Paypal payment for shipping fees. No description of what's inside, but assuming it might be a new brass plate? But it's going to an address I moved away from long ago. So looks like someone lucky will be getting a NEW brass plate?! Thanks to Potter if it is indeed a brass plate.

I am in the exact same situation... Shipping notice of something, but going to an old address :( I think you can re-route DHL packages if you have an-demand account, but I'm not sure. However the tracking number shows up as invalid in DHL's website for now.

I got an e-mail with the same tracking number as the one I received the KB with.

I don't have a brass plate so I think it might be just some administrative thing he did in PayPal.

This same thing happened to me. I posted my solution to the space65 discord if you are in it (It's pinned). I don't remember exactly what was wrong and I have since left the discord server, but I do remember it being something about a windows update causing a conflict with defender.

My PC sometimes doesn't recognize my KBD75v2 when I boot it. The solution I found is that the keyboard registers inputs for a very short amount of time after i unplug and replug the usb, so I just spam my reset key (fn+backspace for me) right after i replug the usb. this allows it to be put into DFU mode and allows me to flash my qmk config in the toolbox

Can we please get some resolution to this? I have posted in the Discord, emailed people, etc.

If nothing is done in the next couple of weeks, I will have no choice but to file a dispute with Paypal.

Unfortunately, at this point I'm not expecting Graystudio to be providing any replacements for those who received faulty brass plates. I sent a follow up email in mid February and unsurprisingly did not hear anything back. They should really not be allowed to have an R2 until issues with R1 have been addressed.

At least you got some form of a refund. He emailed me saying that my account cannot accept refunds. He has no other form of payment/refund so it does not look like I will be getting any refund. Never buying or recommending another GrayStudio product.

And I already refunded the PayPal fee when I refunded it. For example, if it's $55, I'll refund $58, so you can receive $55.1.
