Title: [IC] ALPS ansi key cap set (07-25 update)
Post by: calavera on Wed, 17 July 2013, 02:36:12
I will try to keep this as simple as possible.
This is an interest check for Alps DCS profile double shot keycaps to go hand in hand with my ALPS PCB/plate project (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44851.msg932446#msg932446).

Color inspiration

Actual SP color: BFP/GC combo

Divided into the following three sets.

Combo stems:
Side stems will be cherry mount only.

07-25 update
Looking into stem locations and stab wire options. Any help/pics of your alps board would be appreciated.

I would take it in the time you say ALPS.

Considering that this is one of the few (the only) ALPS project, maybe the color combo is a bit weird (ie: dolch replica alps would probably have more success) BUT I like it!

PS: I'm updating right now the keyboard color chooser with calibrated colors! Check it in an hour or so!

That second one is sexy.  I might be in for a set depending on pricing and how much money I have at the time.

Mmmm tasty alps key caps.  I like all the color combos. Dolch replica would be even better then the space cadet color scheme.

I'd buy a set or three probably! And I like the Space Cadet themed one

Did SP fix whatever issue they had with the stabilized keys? Melissa never got back to me about that.
Title: Re: [IC] ALPS key cap set (ANSI)
Post by: pasph on Wed, 17 July 2013, 06:49:38
in that set there will be also a 1,75 shift?
Will all the stabs be Costar?
Title: Re: [IC] ALPS key cap set (ANSI)
Post by: Matt3o on Wed, 17 July 2013, 06:53:27
11 keys Tsangan has 1.75u shift.

My vote for stabs goes to cherry mounts (you can use costar or cherry stabs) very easy to find, but standard alps stabs would be fine too.

Then why 89 Keys and not 87?

two versions of `~ and \| probably (just my guess)

calavera if this GB is related to the mini you should mention that 1.75 shift is included in the GB.

And another vote for the gray color option, perhaps a smidge darker, not so washed-out?

Yes, indeed.  Nice saturated colors.  I'd definitely be in for that color scheme.

they miss tooling for the stems of all keys over 1.75u (just the stems not the whole key)

Post by: calavera on Wed, 17 July 2013, 08:45:51
Updated post with mock up pics to show what keys are included in each set.

I asked Melissa about combo stems and she gave me tier pricing quote on the three sets so I think SP is capable of that at least. I'll update when I get a response of whether normal alps stab mount is possible for the full set. Then we move on to the stabilizer compatibility.

I like the idea of a combo stem, 4 out of the 5 boards I've stripped have had Cherry stabs. Makes life a lot easier as well considering WASD sell the parts dirt cheap.

I would go for higher contrast (and better retro fidelity)

Recently Krogenar scanned the color ring and we finally have some decently calibrated pictures.

I think BFP is a great choice

But still, these would have those off size long key right?

Haven't been around much but would the GON mx mini case work with the alps pcb?

If it does, I don't think that the off size keycaps matter much, since the case is open.

Anyway, I would like to get in on this if keycaps for the mx mini layout will be provided, and doesn't have to use weird caps on the right side, like people have been using the numpad keycaps and whatnot.

Why not make these keycaps, to the right say something else, as a addon for mx minis.

Would appreciate if you would look in to it, Calavera.

Edit: didn't see that it was DCS profile, thought it was SPH for some reason. :(

I'm new to multicolored sets GBs. Would the function keys be all one color like the Mock-up, or would it go blue-gray-blue in groups, or would it come with both colors? I'm partial to the traditional alternating F key colors myself.

Only thing that worries me about these designs is that the text may be a little bit too low contrast to stand out. Don't want to have it be a repeat of Round 4 Retro, there's a heated discussion going on over at DT about it now.

GTF/GC is really nice

As for BDH/GC I find BDH too dark, almost as strong as GC which kills the contrast between the 2 tones and makes for a rather "heavy set".
A lighter blue like BFP would be neat.

Well at least judging by the mockups, real keyset might look different

so what are your thoughts in trying to get this moving forward?

are you or most people considering this buy for newer tkl alps boards "and/or" the older 101/104 boards like dell 101's and then i am guessing the majority, the rest with the big honking enter key, 1x backspace, etc.?

we have kicked around an alps GB quite a few times, so am hopeful.......... :D

kudo's for grabbing the bull by the horns and trying to gather interest and hopefully a GB.

Currently waiting for SP to get back to me regarding the big ass Enter key. But I'm kind of leaning towards just a standard ANSI set as proposed originally. Once it is determined exactly what key caps are offered in the three sets, we will move to GB/ordering stage.

Meanwhile I'm just trying different color combinations to find the right balance for best readability.

I think people who are interested in this GB will get in on it no matter what color is chosen. :)

I would go for higher contrast (and better retro fidelity)

Recently Krogenar scanned the color ring and we finally have some decently calibrated pictures.

I think BFP is a great choice

(Attachment Link)

Do you have a link to the calibrated scans?

I don't think links are available to the calibrated scans (those are Matt's) but the raw scans (TIFF files) and JPEGs can be found here:

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45743.msg958898#msg958898

Looks like a great potential GB -- ALPS deserved some attention.

There's at least 2 custom Alps projects going on right now. And I thought I knew of a third one. Calavera has his MX Mini layout Alps project and JD/Myself/Photekq/TheFlyingRaccoon are working on a TKL design. I believe Calavera started this buy for his project but I think this will be good for the TKL design. More info can be found in mine and Calavera's signature.

right and thanks for the heads-up........... maybe i discounted this buy somewhat as to be directly related with his new tkl board :-[

on another note those of us that are fond of some of the old alps boards would sure like to hop along for the ride and maybe help punch this thing through. i would love to pimp my old dell at101 and based on those that i see that have one i would think should the opportunity present itself they would also.

larger audience too.......

is this a "first" for alps?

The biggest difficulty with "vintage" Alps boards is the wide range of variation in layout and stabilizer stem type.  It's part of why there has been no full Alps GB before.

i would agree............mine are all over the place :-\

so sticking with the "ansi" layout will still enable say a vintage dell 101 owner to do a full spread- providing there will be a tsangan and num pad to be available?

not sure about the space bar though?

I'd argue that we should target the Ducky XM boards, the Filco Zero, and possibly the Solidtek ASK-6600 and Matias boards

Why?  They're the "modern" boards.   They're most likely to be consistent and no surprises.  For example, I think the Focus 2001 comes in three layouts-- backslash in bottom row, backslash by right shift, and Winkey+backslash by right shift.

They're also the ones most likely available for people who want to pick up an ALPS board to play.  For them, a default board-- that the set is designed to work with-- is a desirable thing.

Also, do note that some of the newer ALPS boards-- the Ducky and the Solidtek-- use a different stabilization than older ALPS boards-- it's Costar-style stabilizers.

understand your reasoning- stems are all over the place and appreciate calavera taking the time to check [the stems]

just food for thought and "if" SP can do the "extra" stems...............i would think at least you open the door for a higher quantity of people getting in, placing an order by those who have an older board (to help bring the price down)-- be it a dell 101 or whatever.

i'm betting there are more of us who have older alps boards than those who have modern alps and then what percentage of those who own modern alps boards are wanting to spend the $ to get in on this GB?

if the general consensus is to stay modern, increased pricing than that is cool............it is what the majority and calavera want.

i'm in regardless based on the color schemes i have seen and are you kidding me..........finally an ALPS GB

am just hopeful if it is narrowed down to a modern layout, SP cannot do extra stems that there will be enough people who pay to bring the price in somewhat reasonable

It was my understanding that SP can't do Alps stabilizer stems.  So the only valid choices are for KBs that have Costar style stabs.

I'd like to have a set that will work on FK-2001 boards, both winkey and winkeyless.

I'm not really interested in newer Filcos or Matias boards, but vintage Focus/Magitronic boards are cheap enough to try several, it would be cool to have custom caps to update their looks.

I'm beginning to see why all past attempts have failed. When it comes to Alps, everything comes down to side stem locations.

It would help tremendously if I could gather info on the various boards and their stem locations.

Backspace, enter, left shift side stems are only 1/16"~1/8" off so my guess is most stabilizers will work fine.
Space bar and right shift is the most problematic.

So if you could post your keyboard, distance between side stem and center stem (center to center), kind of stabilizer..etc. It would help a lot.
Pics are even better.

never have pulled the stabilizers out of a dell board that has ALPS.............good grief

did not see how they came out and took a while to figure which way (murphy's law) they go back

dell (at101) "back space" from center out.....stems are 13-14mm off center

Make a pool and narrow down the old alps kbs interested
Or make a new SP standard alps stabilizers and feed old kbs with just the not stabilized Keys
Don't try to do what can't be done
Focus 2001, AEK, AT101, omnikey, SIIG just to name a few have at least different enter key or space bar stabilizers, then there are the compatibles like monterey, kpt or Omron, then the "new" duckys, Filco zero, Leopold lite, matias.
I have a number of those old kbs, even an IBM 5954339, and wish but really don't think anyone can cover all those variances

UPDATE 07-25

6.25x spacebar: stem positions are fixed. So chances are it won't fit your board in most cases. (If your alps spacebar uses stock cherry mount and positions it will. I've seen some old alps boards with big enter keys use these)

7x spacebar: Additional stems can be done for a one time tooling fee of $1000. Moving the stems will cost $500. The former would mean greater compatibility for various boards. (I've seen some old alps boards with big enter keys use stock cherry mount and positions)

For 2.75x shift, the stems can only be moved by a small amount but I think it's enough for the stab wires.
2x keycaps are fixed but stems are close enough so they should fit as well.

As you can see the spacebar is the biggest obstacle. I'll update the thread in a few to reflect final so we can move on to GB stage.

like you and others have said for older boards will just try and place what will fit

will probably, eventually get a modern alps boards depending on how the caps, colors, options turn out.

to be honest..........i'm a bolt turner, not the best with wiring, soldering- so as much as i like the alps plate, board you are offering i doubt if i would try putting one together

Yup, like the one on top, shorter lengthwise.  Also it has the multi-bend jog in the middle to go around the switch.  But really... why does the wire matter?  It should all be about stem position.
Title: Re: [IC] ALPS ansi key cap set (07-25 update)
Post by: calavera on Fri, 26 July 2013, 19:22:23
I'm looking at custom wires as an alternative to moving stems and paying tooling costs.

A custom wire could mean a spacebar that fits not only filco zero and ducky, but also dell at101w.

For the 7x spacebar a universal custom wire would allow older alps (SGI, dell at101, chicony, northgate omnikey..etc) compatibility without having to move the stems at all.

Not exact dimensions but I think the ducky one seems to be compatible as it is now.

You seem to have a few chicony alps, could you check your stabs and wire dimensions? Pictures would help. I'm also trying to cover big enter layouts as well so if you had pics of those that'd be great. I think the least I can do is include the extra 1x keys so the alphas are consistent at least on most older alps boards.

would be great if this is a possibility depending on cost?

did you get enough dimensions for a dell 101?

would be be awesome to grab a dell board, switch out with matias switches whenever they come out and the possibility, outfitting mostly with new caps

of course i hear and see many that want to keep modern- ducky, zero, ansi, etc. which i understand, but to be able in some form to have the opportunity to at least partially outfit some older boards you would have to think would get more people in the GB?

I thought about it but I think I'm gonna keep it the way it is.

Chances are the mods won't fit on most older alps boards and the only common keys are the alphas. So even with only swapping out the alphas you get similar effect of what the whole set looks like since most alps boards have grey mods already.

Chances are the mods won't fit on most older alps boards and the only common keys are the alphas. So even with only swapping out the alphas you get similar effect of what the whole set looks like since most alps boards have grey mods already.

Ok, didn't know that about Alps.
Btw, how are you making the keycap mockups that are in your first post in this thread?

I like everything about this set.  Love that teal-ish blue.  I will most likely be getting one, as I'd love to build / modify an Alps keyboard in the future.

The problem with the 1800 is that you don't have a plate for the alps stabilizer mounts. what people have done in the past is use a combination of both alps and cherry switches for it because of that. Alps in 1x size (alphas, numbers..etc) and cherry in other sizes (enter, backspace, spacebar..etc) This also solves having to source alps keycaps that fit since 1x sizes are easier to find.

Anyways, the three sets I organized already cover everything for the 1800 layout. Some keys might not be the right height (like page down, delete, end keys.) Spacebar is yet to be determined.

Wondering if this is going to happen or not, but I'm definitely interested.

There are two reasons that a more "normal" color scheme might be a bit better:

1.  There is literally no way (currently) to purchase new ALPS keycaps apart from buying a new-old-stock board with pad-printed ones.  If there were already many options, blue might be nice, but it seems strange as the only option.

2.  ALPS boards are not created equal, especially in the spacebar department.  I use 101 layouts, which have a longer spacebar than those with Windows keys, and with the spacebar provided (with the cherry stuff going on), I would have no way to stabilize it.  In other words, I would be using a stock white spacebar which would stick out like a sore thumb among the blue and grey.

No matter what happens, I would have to use at least a few keys from a different board, whether it be the spacebar, slightly different caps lock, or even the alt and ctrl keys; the ALPS diaspora will make it very difficult for many to match such a specific color scheme.

Currently on hold since I'm extremely busy with life and won't have free time for a month or two.

1. I might go with the alternative color choice instead. Nothing's set in stone.

2. main obstacle and currently working for a partial solution in providing custom stab wires that should work with most stabilizer positions on the space bar. This might take awhile.

Never meant to cover EVERY alps board in the world. That's the reason why I have this IC thread so people with different alps board can chime in with detailed info. So far only a few helped but I had to do most of the estimates and measuring myself. If you have a funky 10x spacebar with 1x size control and 2.5x caps lock...etc you're **** out of luck, chances are SP doesn't have the molds to make them anyway.

So I'll just try to cover "mainstream" ones only.

Hmmmmmm the color scheme is pretty cool.  I like it !!!

Though judging by the spacebar stabilizer stems and bottom row layout, it seems like it will not work with any of the Matias keyboards.

It's the only ALPS keyboard I have.

actually,
after some time pondering this, I thought that what is really missing for me from the Alps-universe are blank keycaps. If they exist, I have never seen them, and I would love to have some.

Any chance that could be an extra option ?
For me personally I do not care much if the modifiers and enter and such are blank, it is mostly the alphanumeric keys I care about, so that would effectively be one one-unit key per row, since for the rest they would be all identical...

for the blanks I would prefer the gray from this set, or perhaps the blue, so that is still nicely goes together with the rest of the set. Thanks for considering this option !

will this key cap set be compatible with a kingsaver?

Yes and no. The Kingsaver has a unique sized Backspace, \, enter, and right shift. They're slightly longer than the standard sizes. They should still fit since the mounting is the same I believe but you'll have some gaps.

You bet.  I know I should of read everything from the beginning, but this is just a question (if it's been answered yet, sorry to repeat) - Would these double-shot ALPs key-set work within a MATIAS keyboard, especially the TKL version?

Just thought how brilliant this Group Buy would be for any owners of Matias boards (with their 'superior' version of an alps switch)  ;D .

Was supposed to move forward earlier beginning this year but stuff came up and I may be leaving the US for good in a few months. Space bar and shift key stabilizer issue is still up in the air and given the length it takes for a group buy and everything that's involved (organizing, payment, ordering/packing..etc) I'm not sure there's enough time to finish this. :(

Wouldn't a Cherry/Costar combination work? I don't have a Costar board but I have two Alps boards now and by the looks of it, the cap inserts should be compatible with Costar stabs.

Which “Alps” keyboards do you have? There are two styles of stabilizers I’ve seen used on keyboards with Alps switches and other Alps-mount switches. Most common is the “Alps”-style stabilizer, and less common is the “Costar”-style stabilizer.

It sounds from your description like your boards/keycaps use the Costar-style stabilizers. That means Signature Plastics’ Alps keycaps (ignoring problems w/ weird-shaped enter keys, etc.) will work great for you. Unfortunately, most people with Alps keyboards have the Alps-style stabilizer, and SP’s stabilized keycaps are not usable on those boards.

Some keyboards use both. For instance, I believe Matias uses Costar-style stabilizers on the spacebar, but Alps-style stabilizers on other keys. I’ve also seen keyboards with Alps-style stabilizers everywhere but on a “bigass” enter key.

Ah, okay. Yes, you have the Alps-style stabilizer. It’s not compatible with Costar-style stabilizers or their inserts.

However, it looks like your plate also might have cutouts to fit the little Costar-style stabilizer clips. So you might be able to use either one.

That plate is thin, plastic, broken and overall absolutely terrible :))

Ah yeah noticed that. Hmm.

Would it be possible to create an adapter to make them fit Costar stabs? I mean the inserts are tiny, maybe making a mold for an adapter wouldn't cost an insane amount?

I’m also curious about this. What you’d actually want is an Alps-style stabilizer insert which fit into a Cherry MX mount (Costar stabilizer mount), assuming the goal is to use SP caps on existing Alps boards/plates.

Since there are currently no other options for Alps sets (other than taking them from other keyboards) I think this will appeal to a lot of people. Also, for this same reason I think a more neutral set, like the GTF/GC
