Lunar II
Second generation compact AEK keyboard by Switchplate Peripherals and ai03

Building upon the legacy of the first generation design, Lunar II brings the acclaimed curved design to a more accessible price, complete with an entirely seamless exterior, increased typing comfort, and solenoid support.

GB details announced here

A worthy successor
Lunar II takes user feedback into mind as it improves upon the first generation design.
The curvature has been refreshed completely to reduce the front ledge height for easier typing, and the 1.2mm aluminum plate balances typing comfort, acoustics, and ease of assembly.
A weight has been added for additional heft and aesthetic accent while retaining the low typing angle.

Zero-seam design
Whereas the original Lunar hid the seam on the bottomside, Lunar II removes the seam completely with a single-piece case, with nothing to break the continuous smooth curvature.
A carefully engineered mounting method secures the plate to the case via O-ring-tipped standoffs, allowing for maximized flex on the typing surface without the stiffness of a typical tray mount.

Making noise
Solenoid support allows you to cue audible feedback at will.
Use the electromagnetic hammer to add clickiness to your favorite tactile or linear switch without changing feel, or supplement and amplify the sound of your clicky switches to a further level.
When in need of quiet, simply toggle the solenoid off.

Alps for all
The Lunar II brings the mini-AEK form to a more affordable price point with easier assembly.
Lunar II only requires a single Apple Extended Keyboard’s worth of keycaps and stabilizers to build, making the task of sourcing parts much easier than the original.
Choose between the unified and split backspace plate options to tailor the build to your needs.

Specifications
Case: Aluminum, single part design
Case color options: Silver, Grey
Weight finish and material: TBA
Plate: Aluminum, through-PCB standoff mount, unified and split backspace variants
PCB: ESD protection, in-switch caps lock LED support for SKCL-LED variants, solenoid switching support (Solenoid included in kit)
Case mass: ~1.2kg (Case, weight, plate)

Layouts:
Note: Each layout requires its own plate; select the correct one as necessary.

Units: 100 total
Price: To be announced
Vendor: Switchplate Peripherals

Advice and Notes:
Tweezers may be helpful for hooking the stabilizer wires.
Prepare and test all switches before building.
Solenoid installation requires slightly advanced soldering and assembly. Tweezers and soldering helping hands may be useful.
The prototype case is an early unit; a solenoid cutout has been added in a later revision.

Lovingly eyes up my stack of M0116s with oranges  ;D Unfortunately never had an AEK, these are considerably more expensive, I wouldn't really view this as a "budget" way to get into Alps.

Possibly, also with as hot as the aftermarket is right now it's almost hard to take a loss on a custom so I'd imagine people are figuring buy now & figure out the details later.

Will the solenoid have a physical switch to turn it off or some key combinations
Keycode within QMK; can be bound to any key position on any layer similar to backlight/underglow toggle keycodes.
Surprisingly, it's a native feature to QMK.

XD75 pcb/plate support could be neat, but i guess i'm a minority under minorities!
Mount points would conflict with switch positions.

Nice finish on that frame.
The prototype was done no-blast no-ano to speed things up, back when it was still plausible to rush a GB early 2020.

Excited~ I don’t think 100 units will be enough
The MX crowd has grown quite a bit but Alps has always been a small circle; hopefully quantity cap won't be an issue.
If demand far exceeds supply, will likely run a round two sometime in the future.

Seems like it's only for the AI03 clout though
Imagine buying a board just because of branding or designer without even wanting the board itself

Sweet mother yes. Any chance for an hhkb layout option?
Would need to be entirely different case and PCB design.

The lack of a seam makes the subtle curvature that much more beautiful. I still have a bag of salmon alps that I've been meaning to clean and lube.

The modern M0110 was a little too old school, but this right here is nod to Apple's 90's design language while still being beautifully modern.

If my G60 ever ships it would be the 60% Cherry MX ying to this 60% Apple Alps yang. It'd be beautiful.

Never ended up building my v1 Lunar due to the integrated plate. Hoping to get on this one with all the new improvements... and that solenoid!

Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't the OG Lunar keyboard a 65% keyboard layout (with an arrow cluster)?  Any chances of the 65% Lunar making a comeback?

Sweet mother yes. Any chance for an hhkb layout option?
Would need to be entirely different case and PCB design.

Would be entirely worth it though 😉 Split right shift support can go in that fantasy never- gonna-happen list too

I'm guessing one of the major barriers to split right shift isn't just a design decision, it's availability of compatible keycaps.

Just here to voice my minority opinion to show there is an interest (although idk if there's enough to warrant it). Would be down to see a hhkb blocker version. Not sure if a second design and having two pcb options would overcomplicate things.

Split right can't be accommodated due to the post/standoff that connects from the case to the plate. It interferes with where you would insert the switch. Having tested and played around with the proto, I'm pretty happy with the amount of flex and give the board has and I think moving the mounting point a column up or down, or even to the middle would shift the stiffness of the alpha section significantly.

Cap availability was also a big thing with Lunar mk1. Either salvage a second board for a single cap or have a resin cast one.

That said, I'd really enjoy having split right shift for hhkb arrows... I'll probably just map shift to fn and still throw hhkb arrows under there.

Why not just make the pcb take both?

The primary objective is to create a board that uses Alps switches. Almost every other PCB created in this hobby is for MX switches, so you've got your choice there. As for the Solenoid, if that is your primary concern, there are ways of creating this on your own. Mike Walker of Walker Keyboard Science on YouTube has done just that, if I remember correctly.

It doesn't use the standard 60% mounting points. It's different positions and mounts to the plate instead of the PCB, so it will not be compatible with other projects/cases I'm afraid

Yes... and none of those are compatible with a solenoid (out of the box at least).. i think it's weird that you find it weird, seems pretty simple and obvious to me, but maybe i'm missing something.

So, here I am, typing on an ADK64 build with AEK caps. After trying every single profile and material out there imaginable (with the exception of a KAM set),  I've come to the conclusion that a AEK caps are without a doubt the best sculpt and finish of any keycaps for me.  I NEED this board, sir.  Any updoots?  PCBs coming along?

I mean, if you've never used a real dampened Alps switch before, Matias quiet click will feel okay.  But when you put them side by side... there's not really much good to say about the Matias.  I've found a few people selling NoS simplified white Alps switches, which are a step up from Matias clicks for sure.  NoS yellow Alps are still floating around here and there as well, and offer a great linear experience.

Thank you for the warning. It was just a fleeting question. Really I am just trying to personally weigh the effort-to-reward ratio, given that I am a keyboard noob. The investment of time and effort to first acquire all the right parts + all the cleanings, diss-assemblies re-assemblies would thoroughly test me compared to you seasoned vets. ..its also that aspect that makes this board highly attractive..among others

I disagree. This board gives a home to Alps and AEK keycaps.  The shape of the keycaps were very different than anything we have today.  Just considering keycaps, not only are the stems a mismatch, but the slope and contour doesn't fit any board today. I love my LunarAEK - the sound and feel of my old aek in a 65% form factor.

He's making 50 or so a-stock keebs.  It's what customs are all about. I luckily got my lunar AEK from someone who wanted out of the group buy due to a job change.  I'm hoping to not miss out on this one.

I wish right shift would be possible to split (I know that it is hard to find keycaps, but I would like it to be possible, because it is my preffered way if I would decide to use it as main keyboard)

Update:
I red it intereferes. hm. I always need 5 keys on right side for arrows and alt gr OR fn and mods. Men I wish this was 65% as first run haha. No problem searching for keycaps if it satisfies me with my favorite layout :) I joined community kinda after the gb ran. R3 with 2u shift solves everything (ducky layout)

I just saw this and yes, please, I want one.  The only bit of kit I have from my Macintosh II days is its keyboard.  I tried a couple of ADB to USB dongles - they all failed to impress.  And so it sits in my closet.
Cherry clones have come a long way.  They would be my first choice.

Beautiful board, all in for one if this ever happens. Any updates on the project? It’s been a very long time but it seems like there are plenty of people interested in supporting this group buy.

Sorry for the long silence - with so much happening in life, didn't have the time to devote to this project for the past year or so.
Finally finding time to finish off the prototype and conduct testing, after which one of two things can occur:

- If the testing goes smoothly with nothing in particular to note, it will head straight to group buy.
- If the testing finds something to revise, I'll run one more prototype prior to group buy. Hopefully this won't take anywhere near as long as the last one.

Currently going through the hassle of lubing switches for the proto - once testing results are in, I'll report back here and on Discord.

Edit:
Early testing results are as follows with orange alps + solenoid:

I am a fan of many ai03's projects.
Please make the pricing competitive, so I can also support this project.
Despite my enthusiasm of ai03 and many of the great designers' projects, I cannot pay for anything not covered by my salary / savings...

This time around it'll be kept 100 per vendor for the sake of not exceeding the vendors' capacities - rather run multiple rounds or a successor in quick succession than have one huge group buy that goes on forever.

(And yes, there are plans for a third gen Lunar and a TKL in the works, but far too early to tell when they'll run (if at all) just yet.)

Just finished finalizing the case design based on prototype testing; awaiting feedback before finalizing GB details.

The AEK had typewriter-like staggered row height right? I'm wondering if this board will implement that or if the plate is flat and it's just the sides of the board that are curved?

Disregard I don't know who told me the plate was curved it's the keycaps I realise now.
Are you making any improvements to the board now that it's been a few years and tray mount isn't end game any more? I recall end game being used to describe the board back then

Re-read the first post to see the goals of this board.
Also, I've been happily running a tray mount board as a daily driver for over a year despite other boards such as Andromeda and Vega existing; the important details are of implementation specifics and applicability to the project rather than choosing some "end game" mount method by name alone.

Yeah I'm down for 100 units. Less likely to have delays or miscoms with the manufacturer, and other entities involved, and other unknowns happen down the line. Hopefully that will translate to quicker turnaround times too.

I agree. More.. "advanced" mounting methods are beyond over rated. My best sounding keyboard is a tray mount.

Am always supporting ai03's designs among some other great designers, regardless of the vendors / partners.

Have been eyeing on one of these for over a few years, but this time I probably can't afford it unless I win a lottery (which I don't actually buy any in reality).

First order was the anodized gray.
I wasn't planning on getting a second one, but then I caved and got another -- in anodized silver!

I'm surprised that there are still spots (as of this writing);
I was thinking that all the units would have been bought out in 5 minutes or less,
and had panicked when I tried to order and realized that I never made an account with switchplate! FML.

Lunar II is my first group buy, ever!
So glad to finally have a chance to cop a custom that properly contours the AEK caps.
My favorite builds:
- Night Owl Keyboards Gemini TKL (smoked PC) w/Hineybush H88nu, custom POM plate, NOS ALPS SKCM Blue, Keytrak ABS doubleshots
- Prototypist J-02 Black WKL w/4pplet cyber60, custom POM plate, ALPS SKCM Cream Undamped, HP Vectra CS PBT dye-subs

I mean, it's a 60%, and the market definitely trends to 65% a the moment.  Also, it's Alps.  Also, you have to own AEKII caps (extra cost invested to buy).  Also, most people looking for boards at the moment are looking for the workd "gasket" or "leaf spring"  or "o-ring."  Also, it's expensive.  That's at least 5 strikes against the board for a large chunk of the current community.

Now, for those of us who know... well, we know.

Is it 100 units total? That would mean it is actually close to hitting the limit. I got in with ano silver. And true this is definitely not the best time to have a gb but it is what it is.

Beige powdercoat is clearly the most popular choice:

Did I miss the delivery or it's "got" as in "paid, waiting for fulfillment"?
BTW, do we have any timeline?

Usually FRL would be an instant no from me, but seeing as keycap availability would mess that plan up, doing it as anything but FRL would be a total richard relocation.

Yes, when I said got I meant purchased but still awaiting fulfillment
