I'm still pretty new to this hobby.  Regular cherry MX blacks are 80g and are Gateron blacks 50g or 60g?  On MD its saying 50g but on the tear down its saying 60g for the Gateron blacks.  Thanks!  :)

Cherry MX Black actuates at 60g, bottom out around 80g.

Gateron Black actuates at 50g, and probably bottoms out around 65-70g

Thanks for this explanation. I was looking to find something slightly higher than Reds but lighter than Blacks (MX Variants)...Gateron Blacks are gonna be perfect.

So would it be a good idea to focus on one type of linears in order to reach the MOQ?

Gaterons are PCB mount only, but they can be made into plate mount by clipping them!

What do you mean by clipping?

If you plate mount and the PCB doesn't have holes for the legs on the bottom of the switch housing you simply clip those two plastic legs off with a pair of cutters.

I don't want to belabor this question, but I always assumed that the the difference between "plate mount" and "pcb mount" was the legs on the bottom which are intended to key to the pcb and the presence of the little clips on the side which attach to the plate.  The discussion now makes me think that both types of switches have the little clips.  Is that true?     It never occurred to me that the little legs on the bottom would need to get cut off in a plate mount since they really wouldn't be getting the in way (except I guess for vertical height?).

I'm in the process of planning for my first build and I had been on the fence between cherry browns & clears but this GB has me fairly convinced to buy the Gateron browns.  I wish we had a little more feedback on how they compare to the cherry browns.

Michael

If you want some more info about the browns, I wrote a little explanation on the thread of the interest check. It was linked in the OP but you can find here if you want: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=68145.msg1639775#msg1639775

Get both, I got clears and browns, the only reason I chose clears over blacks is I plan to change the springs and I think clears look better.  :thumb:

Edit: Wait, are Gateron clears not as smooth as Gateron blacks?

All the linears are smooth. I'll probably be writing a writeup soon on a bunch of switches that I picked up.

So I'm at home waiting for a few packages (Poker II with MX clears and a few gas masks) and just did a tally of what has been claimed to have been purchased in this thread. Not including users who are on the fence:

BLACK: 1,395
CLEAR: 950
BROWN: 190
BLUE: 60
NO COLOR MENTIONED: 7,010

Cherry Blues already suck, I can't see how a switch with even greater hysteresis would be fun.

I'm starting to wonder more and more, while the price per switch is amazing, does that include the following...

1. Transaction fee (Currency conversion fee, bank/money transfer/paypal fees, etc?) from you (HWood) to the company?
2. Does that include the shipping fees from the factory to Shadovved?

gaterons Browns aren't that great, maybe slightly better than their mx equivalent but not quite the tactility of a mx clear.

They're MX compatible so they will. I think the ergo is plate mounted though if I'm not mistaken, you you'll have to clip the pins on the bottom of the switches, as I think they only come PCB-mount.

They will in fact work with an ergodox, they have the same pin layout as MX switches.

Thanks a lot for the responses, for the ergodox you have solder the "key switches on to the PCB with case plate layer sandwiched in the middle." according to the instructions.

Again im new to all this so I'm just hoping that I do not do any modifications to the gateron switches.

Awesome. But which ones have reached the 0.16 level? I really hope blues get there.

Because I figure I can move the 200 browns to blues and get more blues or move to any other color switch to reach the 0.16 level.

I was actually on the fence with regards to buying the ergodox but upon being lead to this thread, I am now deciding on whether I should get the black, red or clear switches.

I am leaning towards the black switches but is there anyway we can get a number on the amount of buys for each switches?  I guess whichever is closer to the 20,000 units for the reduced price would make my decision easier.

Hey hwood,

Hope you’re not too upset about MassDrop also putting up a Gateron buy. I’ve been repeatedly telling them to do one for several months (also telling them to do Kaihua, Gaote, etc. buys), and urging them to offer Gateron/Kaihua options on their keyboard kits (Ergodox, etc.).

I don’t think their buy is at all related to this one, except insofar as the handful of recent reviews of Gateron switches on geekhack probably increased the number of people requesting that they offer some.

Anyway, mad props for everything you’re doing here. Organizing GBs is a massive amount of work, you guys are saints.

Nah, it's fine. With the kind of numbers we're getting, it doesn't seem like theirs is really hurting this or anything. It would have been nice if they had let me know they were going to do something like this in advance, but, whatever.

The guys at MD do not appear to care much about GH, maybe they do about other keyboard communities.

Damn I really hope people are not getting confused and think that gateron clears are tactile.

Otherwise, I think sellers should order springs because we will need about 20k soon apparently.
