potatoes are the best food, so much you can do with them. potato chips, french fries, mashed potatoes, potato soup, potato bread, VODKA?, twice baked potatoes/potato skins, hash browns, potato salad, potato wedges, scalloped potatoes, gnocchi, so much

That's not weird at all.
Norwegian akvavit and Polish vodka are often made of potatoes, whereas grain is most often used elsewhere.
And that is mostly because there is better economy of scale, storage and distribution with grain in the modern world. In older days, most Swedish akvavit used to be made from potatoes.
