[IC] SP SA Mechanist (Restart!)
« on: Thu, 03 November 2016, 07:54:34 »
MassDrop Vote opened, please tell me what you like:
https://www.massdrop.com/vote/-SA-Mechanist-Tell-me-what-you-like

Hi! After a long waiting, I decide to restart this IC now.
For some reasons I waited for about 1 year, but now I think it's the right time for me to restart it.

Mechanist is all  about low-key, blue cold tone colors.
As our basic principle of this design, we want to design a keyset for daily use, and more suitable for your work.

I 'm going to gradually update the drawings, if you have any advices and needs, please feel free to leave massages here,Thanks!

Again, I'd like to reiterate that this keyset's design has nothing to do with any other movies, tv dramas, keyboard, and so on. This design is originally made by WolfMark.Club.

Set name:Mechanist
Profile:SA(1-1-2-3-4-3)
Production:SP
GB schedule:2018, Summer
Design:WolfMark.Club

Blue alphas (in SA format) are almost unheard of. We need more! Dasher/Dancer is merely a good start.  ;D

Have you thought about about naming the set something different? "Mechanist" isn't really part of the English lexicon. In addition, it's a name that is used in the Fallout video game, and you might run into some IP issues like the Out of the Vault GB did.

I think that calling the set "Mechanic," "Engineer," or "Maker" will better convey the feel that you are trying to create.

Yes, your DaD set made a good start,  the colors are quiet suitable for work , people love it.
BTW, we call your set "dad" in China  :p,  a lot of people love your design and eager to buy one, really looking forward to Dec. groupbuy of Dasher/Dancer

I know "mechanist " is not  a common word in English, but "Mechanic," "Engineer," or "Maker"  are too normal, and not impressive at all.

and, this set has absolutely on intimation of any games and brands.......

If you're looking for a unique name, then how about "Grease Monkey"? That's the slang version of "Mechanic."

Even if you aren't taking any inspiration from Fallout, you might still find yourself in hot water for using the name of one of the characters.

There are actually several characters named "Mechanist" in the Fallout series, but that's not funny because using that name might get you into the kind of trouble that stopped another GB.

'Mechanist' is an archaic form of 'Mechanic', as well as a term used in philosophy to describe a believer of mechanism. The word's usage peaked once in the 1820s and again between in the 1930s. The Fallout series doesn't own the word any more than J.K. Rowling owns the word 'Potter'. ;)

Now we have not decided, but very likely.
One more alpha color, can be more suitable for some occasions.
But we need to carefully consider the color mix.

Count me in for Base, Frozen and Numpad  :thumb: very nice work, looks a bit like an inverted Calm Depths if you don't mind me saying, but of course enough differences that make it unique nonetheless.

If you want to keep costs down for users of alternative layouts you should split the base kit into alphas and modifiers.

Thanks.
Actually, after we decided the colors,  we found that they the same with some popular SA designs.

BFR: calmdepth
BBJ :  Dasher and Dancer, Oblivion
BFM:  yuri
WA:  a lot of sets use it as a font color.

but ,I think the color matching and the design inspiration are unique for Mechanist.

Base and frozen, count me in.  Are the frozen alphas the same colors as Chronicler?

http://www.kbdist.com/chronicler-origins/

I don't think that set ever did much though because of the miscommunication.  I believe they were run with Cherry legends not centered.

I tried to find which white(grey?) color that Chronicler used on Originative, but the color information is not there.
According to its real photo which taken after production, the keycaps look more grey than WA.

and I also checked the introduction of Chronicler,it says inspired by DCS Soware,
Soware used the BFQ(cyan), GSL(light grey), GTD(deep grey)

so , I don't think they are the same. we are so lucky!

These are beautiful.

Only two things are missing from this to make it perfect for me:
A 1.75 R3 key that's either FN, blank, or a novelty.
A second 2.25 R3 novelty key so I can have two in the same color to use as a split space bar. Two blank 2.25 keys would work as well, but a second novelty might be easier to add to the set.

If those were options than I'd definitely get this set instead of or in addition to SA Oblivion, since it's the only set I know of so far that has those options.

I just got a PM claiming that you "copied" the alphas from my set (DSA Frost DSAFrost.weebly.com). Since I have been falsely called a "copycat" myself I don't want to jump to conclusions here but seeing that the alpha's kit was even called "Frozen" really made me wonder if you took some inspiration from my set. Have a nice day :) Jan

Edit: Oh and by the way, I do really like your set. Especially the standard base set with the "pastel colors" looks extremely nice imo!

I don't think it looks like frost at all, but I guess it's subjective.  Speaking of frost, I didn't know you had a page up yet.  Gratz on that.  However, I'm confused becuase the render on your page isn't using SP's font. I have 2 sets of SP DSA caps and 1 SA and that font isn't Gorton Modified.

Not the entire set for sure, but the white/greyish and blue alphas with "frozen" as a name did make me wonder. Again, I don't think this really is a problem since imo there's no such thing as a rightful owner of a "colorway" or anything and if there was I certainly wouldn't be it, I was just interested if it was the case :)

Thank you! And hmm indeed I'm typing on a SP DSA set as well atm and the font does look a bit different (the "Q" and numbers in particular) though still very similar. I actually rendered it using a model someone on /r/keycapdesigners created which I think was based on keyboardlayouteditors DSA Retro preset. Well, the final set will be in Gorton Modified when/if (poll is still not fully successful :() it goes in production.

Ooh and if you're interested, here's the MassDropp poll: every vote is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the link.  Yes, the font is similar but it looks a bit too small and kind of short in X-height.
