You said that there less than 10 of these keyboards+keycaps out there. How many of them are known to you as being owned by community members and how much are owned by someone unknown by your estimation?

And most of them ended up in Soviet bloc, which would be Croatia and we don't have a huge membership in that area.

Can't wait for you to get it!

Naturally.

I have no idea at all. I'm sure there are some undiscovered ones out there. I really don't know how to guess, no idea how many were even made to begin with. Maybe a few dozen?

Yeah but the first one was a loaner sent to Massdrop. This one is mine, and more likely to be a cinder block.

Edit: This is the one I bought.

Well they could have trashed a lot of the boards after they became useless. Banks shred their equipment, including keyboards in case there is precious information stored on any of it.
There is no way that there were only 10 boards ever made.

Yea. I would guess there were a few thousand ever made, not many left. Maybe it's more than a few dozen, but I highly doubt more than a handful of additional boards will ever be found. Any that remain are either in basements/attics, junk piles, landfills, etc.

Edit: When I said a few dozen, was referring to remaining units, not units originally manufactured.

What kinds of customers did the originals end up with?  Banks?  Government?  Foreign firms?

To the best of my knowledge the Dario 286 was just a regular consumer machine.

Oh, I thought you wrote the Massdrop text.
Quote
Originally manufactured in Germany in 1989, the TA Dario keyboard was only sold for a few months in Europe with a 286 PC/AT mail-order bundle. It was destined for obscurity; by 1989, 286 systems were already on their way out, and moreover, 1990 brought the fall of the USSR and the political reshaping of Germany and Eastern Europe, the exact regions into which the Dario 286 was sold. Of the few units produced, nearly all were lost to history. Today, fewer than 10 TA Dario keyboards are believed to exist.

I did write the Massdrop text. So, it would better read "known to exist." I have cataloged all I can find on the web and it's ~10. Beyond that it's just speculation. There could be a warehouse of 50,000. There could be 0. My guess is it's much, much closer to the latter.

Ah, Croatia.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Agreed, hopefully that was in another box.

I think it may be a clothing box.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.
