Hey all,

This is my first foray into keycap design (read; I have no idea what I'm doing), and what better way to begin than to pay homage to one of the all time greats...that is, Earthfbound!

My inspiration starts from the amazing wallpaper I've been staring at over the past month:

I know this may not suit everyone, but I've given it a crack non the less and came up with the following (version 6):

Looks sweet! :) I'd love a planck kit, as well as european kit / one kit for each country! Check out granite; it managed the child deals extremely well! :)

Really like it. The colorway is pretty gorgeous, although the lavender could be used a bit more. Two small things, there should be a Blue/green escape key, and mono legend arrow keys.

This looks great, my only issue personally is I'm not a huge fan of the font on the caps.

Thanks! I've added a Planck/Atomic kit. The internationals however may take some time as I'll need to manually find/configure all the varying characters, you wouldn't happen to have a template anywhere would you? :)

Cheers! Well the only lavender I had to work with was the roof of the house :)~

I've added the mono legend arrows and moved them to a specific 'Alternate Arrows Kit' as well as the blue/green escape key.

The font is for representative (?) purposes only, and will more closely resemble say the recent Modern Selectric set (http://pimpmykeyboard.com/sa-modern-selectric-keyset/ (http://pimpmykeyboard.com/sa-modern-selectric-keyset/))

Do you have another font in mind?

I think it looks great.

Thanks!  :thumb:

Ah okay. I'm a big fan of the Modern Selectric font, so if that's what you choose than I'm a fan!

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this set. It looks good so far, but I have to say I would love to see a 'SMAAAASH!' key as a replacement for enter or something (perhaps in the novelty kit).

Here's how granite did it; you'd need an ISO enter + shift as well!

This would cover a majority of european users! :) If you search up mito DSA Sci-Fi you can see that he had a specific deal for each country; your choice how you want to keep it! :)

As someone who would actually buy an international kit, I would dramatically prefer separate deals for each country. I know its not always feasible because of concerns around demand, but it's a lot more expensive to have to buy a whole kit with a lot of keys I'm not going to use.

I'll be passing on this since it's all Row 3 SA ( :( ), but I love the inspiration.   :thumb:   The resulting set ends up looking a bit like Calm Depths meets HyperFuse, which is nice, though I'd probably change the color of the mod legends as they seem to stand out a bit too much in my opinion.  The alphas have complementary blues while the mods have contrasting purple/beige.  Just my 2 cents though.  :)

Nope. The height of R1 and the profile overall lend itself to easily introducing lateral force on the switch and increasing friction. Unless you adapt to the profile for the aesthetic appeal (it is very striking), I personally haven't found an SA set that I enjoy using.

Thanks for the info, I'll try get to this at some stage after work =) to be honest I'm wanting it as fair as possible, so a deal for each country sounds good!

Would it make any difference if it was varying profile SA? :P

I've made a little 'contrast' comparison (see below), don't think I can make it 'darker' without it looking somewhat 'dirty':

Ugh, Joker + Dasher/Dancer, + Dusk, and now this?  My wallet can only take so much.  I like the color scheme so I'm going to keep an eye on this one and see how things go with time and wallet.

Time to bump up the beer money generation, I guess ;)

Yes it would.  :D  I wouldn't mind another sculpted SA set, but all row 3 just wasn't for me.

The more I look at it, the more the current mod colors grow on me.  So maybe it isn't as big of a deal as I originally made out.  But I am curious why you went with the beige to begin with?  I don't see that color theme in the original inspiration picture, so I'm just curious.  :)  That said, pulling more colors from the original picture, have you tried a color similar to the "cliff" colors as the base for the mods?  Seems to be a more neutral tone to me.  Though at that point the set is largely blue/grey, which is both a little less exciting and more like Calm Depths, which I don't think is the right choice.  Hmm.  (pardon my rambling :)) )

:) well I was tossing up between row 3 or 1-1-2-3-4-4 (with SP row 3 Shift and Space Bar), your thoughts?

The beige was as 'close' as I could get to the browney/rocky(grey?) cliff colors without looking too 'dirty' and with what the ABS color palette allows. I tried quite a few varients to make it suitable enough to the cliff and still look good with the violet legends. Hope that made some sense  ;D

It's beautiful but, and this is my fault, 'SMAAAASH!!' should have two exclamation points.
I seriously can't wait to see how this turns out - Earthbound is just an amazing game and I loved it when I was younger.

Awesome! here's hoping you have awesome skillz in 3D rendering  :p

I'm trying to stay away from anything proprietary e.g. the ESC key in your image, as SP has some strict rules around producing anything copyrighted (...I think :|)

From one fan to another, I hope we can make this happen :)

Cheers dude, there are plenty of SA sets around these days, I'm hoping to let this simmer (while I work out how to actually get it off the ground) until the proper shift keys (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=76674.0) are sorted out with SP (PMK) so we get a nice 'properly' sculpted SA set  :thumb:

I'm not sure what all font options are available but it might be cool exploring the one the text in the game was. I am not a 100% it would look good until it was on some renders. I am talking about the pixel style like this

or something like these

Cool idea, and maybe someone can elaborate on this but I think we are limited to a very small subset of fonts, at least with the SA profile manufactured by SP (PMK).

Unless you want to pay for custom molds for a new font then you will be very limited when it comes to options sadly. Unless you choose to dye-sub but I highly doubt that's what you're going for.

Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah not thinking dye-sub would be a popular option :(

No problem, I'd definitely go with double shot as well. People aren't too big of a fan of dye sub since they don't last as long. Any chance of getting a render done for the set, that usually reels in a bigger crowd?

I'm not sure what all font options are available but it might be cool exploring the one the text in the game was. I am not a 100% it would look good until it was on some renders. I am talking about the pixel style like this

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

I'm in Australia and the render options (that I have found) are 50 USD, so without sounding like a tigha$$, 70 AUD for a render is steep for me at this stage, I've spent a mint this month :(

If I wasn't being spammed myself I'd knockup some roughish renders but they wouldn't be anywhere close to what the gurus produce here.

Edit; 50 USD = 70 AUD

I'm in Australia and the render options (that I have found) are 50 USD, so without sounding like a tigha$$, 80 AUD for a render is steep for me at this stage, I've spent a mint this month :(

If I wasn't being spammed myself I'd knockup some roughish renders but they wouldn't be anywhere close to what the gurus produce here.

Wow I always forgot about the insane currency jump from USB to AUD. I wish I could help as well, I never really got into rendering. I've been blowing up my wallet as well the past few weeks and even have more to spend in the upcoming week.

Glad to see this IC is still in motion, keep up the good work. :thumb:

Looks like a pretty awesome set. I'd like to see the legend color and cap color reversed though, I think the lighter blue/green with the darker font would look superb.

Looks sweet! :) I'd love a planck kit, as well as european kit / one kit for each country! Check out granite; it managed the child deals extremely well! :)

Thanks! I've added a Planck/Atomic kit. The internationals however may take some time as I'll need to manually find/configure all the varying characters, you wouldn't happen to have a template anywhere would you? :)

I'm quite afraid it won't save anyone any money in the end and several countries will be left out in the cold when several of the child deals don't tip. :(

I feel your pain though, it must be frustrating as an international user. :(

Perhaps that may be for another day; but I'd personally love this in Cherry profile. :)

I'd also be interested in seeing a Dvorak kit (and perhaps some love for those who use Colemak, as well).

Cheers; and great work! - I really like the wallpaper too.

Finally got back home and was greated with my SP/PMK color chips (see main post).

I ordered color codes; BED, GFE, TGG, VBV, YW, and RDA

Verdict:
YW; Looks more mustard than orange, thinking it would be better as YL
BED and VBV; Looks great/exactly as I had envisaged
RDA and GFE; This is what was orignally proposed however I also trialed TGG, which doesn't look as appealing.

In conclusion:
Final colors will be BED, GFE, VBV, YL, and RDA

Comments appreciated, I'll do my best to do some sort of rendering so you get the idea.

I love the colors, but maybe you can cut the mockups into separate images for each kit, "zooming" in actually makes it smaller because of the image size/height.

You would think they would maybe beef up their ability to produce these caps if there is such a demand for them. Probably not quite to the break even point to pay for more machines yet.

The equipment costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, it would not be a good investment for them. Even creating a second set of molds if for some reason they had spare machines would still cost ridiculous amounts.

Thanks for the feedback guys, naturally SA is the 'preferred' as we can all tell by the abundance of SA sets being IC'd at the moment.

As Steezus pointed out, it may be good to have something else in the mix, that way we don't have to necessarily wait for one year to get the set produced...after all people do love Granite :P

I'll clarify all the different pricing tiers with SP and see how we go :)

In a post from Oobly a little while back, SP mentioned to him via email that they had ramped up production capabilities on the SA profile.  What they specifically did is uncertain from that email but they apparently did do some work to increase production.

As for the cost of those injectors, that would vary highly based on what models.   Can't seem to find any pricing information on new ones, just PDF brochures and marketing/sales info with links to sales for more info.  I suppose it couldn't hurt to inquire.

Well you don't really want to push people out of 'the rotation', I mean the whole process is dependant on the support of the community, so doing a GB before others would be...well...I don't know sort of wrong. However, if everyone hates DSA then we shall see what the people want. I've contacted SP and see what they get back with in terms of pricing :)

I'm not sure I'd buy this either way... but I'd be a lot more likely to buy this in DSA. Theres so much competition within the SA feild that I have to be certain I want it, while something like this I'd feel free to buy and try out given its a reasonable price.

I don't think PBT would be possible on this set due to the legends being a lighter colour than the base on the alphas

Those colors can only be manufactured double shot, unless you make the alphas lighter with darker legends to have them made dye sublimated on PBT.

Spoton, so we have the following options:

DSA: PBT/dye sublimated
SA:   ABS/Doubleshot (with the International Kits dye sublimated)

Need to work within the rule of thumb that the keycaps need to be lighter in color than the text for sublimation, so that certainly impacts the final color options.

Thanks swimmingbird and ideus.

I'll throw an update out here as soon as I hear back from SP.

Doesn't SP have molds for international sets already? Why would those have to be sublimated for SA?

The only concern with DSA is the colorway (I believe) for anything that needs dysublimation (e.g. international sets).

I would love to be able to do the whole things DSA (ABS/Doubleshot), however I do not believe we can doubleshot the international kits? That is the only reason I'm leaning toward SA (the whole thing can be ABS/Doubleshot).

Just be aware that DSA PBT keys over one unit, like most modifiers, will warp when they are dyesub, just check any key out of the three Granite rounds, I got into all three of the rounds and the defect is consistent, the sides of the keys are bended inwards, so their profile is not square anymore, even one unit alpha keys get the same defect, but it doesn't look that bad on them, because their sides are shorter.

This might just be my ansi fanboyism showing, but you shouldnt be reworking the entire set and choosing dyesub over doubleshot just to appease what is a marginal fraction of users.

Can't be DSA PBT given the colors as SP only does PBT as dyesub.  Dyesub requires the legend color be darker than the cap color which isn't the case here.  The only option is doubleshot ABS.

Certainly an interesting layout.

Would you be able to make that set up with the existing offering? if not what is missing?

It wouldn't be feasible to have a separate buy for just this layout as it wouldn't be as popular as some of the others, however if we can throw a few more keys into the other (already existing) kits then it's a possibility.

Right shift and control do not look the same width in the picture, as the layout size states. By the way, do you really have one of this, or you are waiting one to be delivered?

Both pictures are from their official site, I have no idea why it looks different.
I don't have it yet, it's gonna ship in September, I'm exploring options :)

The set is awesome, so I'm planning on buying it either way if it comes to that, uhk keys would be the cherry on top :)

As for the special keys: 1.5 backspace, 2.25 ctrl, an additional 2.25 shift, and a bunch of 1.75's for space/enter/mod (smash would be lovely).

This is one of the nicest looking designs I've ever seen in a keycap set, seriously hope it goes through to production. Homage to a great game as well. Here's to hoping it gets enough votes :-)

Any chance for a kit that would support the ultimate hacking keyboard?

The layout looks like this:

Thanks for the list, when we get this party started I'll see if we can do an addition to one of the packs.

Thank you good sir! I'm hoping we get slotted into the Massdrop queue soon :)

It may well be a while before this one runs on MD.  At least judging from the Dasher/Dancer thread, they were slated on MD later in 2016.  Curious to see where this one falls.

Yeah I hear you, I personally would love to see buys run in terms of profile differences in the sets, for example; SA one month then DSA then GMK Cherry etc. Obviously this method is flawed as there are not that many sets with varying profiles, buy hey, it's a bit of variety.

DSA does seem to have gained some ground this year.  We had a huge round of Granite, then Hana, and now this.  There's at least one or two other DSA sets I recall popping up recently as well.  GMK ends up tricky on regular rotation given the MoQ requirements and limited color palette.

Here's to hoping JTK can eventually step up capacity to handle a larger workload.  Then we just need matt3o to come through with those hi-profile caps he's been working on.

Definitely interested! I love this game, just started playing it again for the jillionth time.  :D

The only thing I would change is the font.... Not sure if that's been set in stone after the MD IC.

If it's SignaturePlastics, could the Isotherm Line font be used? It has a sorta futuristic look to it, I think it would look shweeeeeet on this set

Either way, nice job Glenmael!

My keyboards bottom row are 6.0 and 6.25 :( :(

hehe thanks mate, it's a cracker of a game. I always gravitate back to Earthbound and other such AMAZING SNES RPGs, would love to just list them all (don't tempt me).

the font selection is quite strict (I believe) but certainly can confirm once we get this set rolling (from a 'have a set date on MassDrop' point of view).

thanks for the awesome feedback :)

Check the front page :) 'alternate layout kit' should be accommodating.

An Earthbound-themed set?! Probably the only kit I've seen recently that I actually want.

Maybe we can get a Mother 3 kit soon after this one drops :)

This is pretty much my dream set. Any chance of getting a second left shift in the alternate layouts kit for us fc660m owners?

They have said that I'm in the queue, not much else aside from that. Was hoping for a more concrete date/time/answer to report back but I'm afraid that's all I've been given.

Will ask for another update :)

Thank you for all the support.

I was hesitating with DSA Navy and didn't click the BUY botton. But I am sure I will with this set.
However, please make the modifier more visible.
Thanks.

Cheers for the feedback, the colors look 'washed' in the mockups.

Take a look at the actual color chips and you will see that the modifiers are certainly vibrant :)

In queue is a good start.  They've been reluctant on giving out timelines at the moment so I'm not too surprised at no date estimates yet.  At least them acknowledging that the buy is on the list is something.  Now the waiting game begins.

Prefer DSA. Make sure to make blank alphas available.

Hasn't dropped yet.  Honestly, sets have been dealing with some long waits with MassDrop at times for whatever reason.  It's more just waiting to see when it runs if it is indeed in the MassDrop queue as has been indicated.  Hell, Dasher/Dancer had the MD submission done back in.... March or April?  It's supposed to run in December.  We'll have to see how this one goes.

PMK doesn't have them in all colours. So there is a need to make sure they're available, one way or the other.

I was starting to think there were too many sets with blue colourways being produced but I just can't stop coming back to look at the renders on this page. Although I generally prefer green I'm hypnotised by this theme - it just seems to glow  I was going to wait for Nuclear Data to run again, but I'll need something to hold me over especially given that SA production queue.

I was wondering though, is there any chance of including a grey/purple F5-F8 in the Alternate Modifiers Kit so that the colour stripe could swing either way? I'm looking to deck out an Access-IS 15x8 matrix with 1x1 keys, and at  the moment it's looking like I won't be using any grey/purple keys unless F5-F8 are offered in grey/purple. I could probably live without the grey mods, but something about the dullness of them really seems to make the alphas pop :thumb:

I have to imagine this one has run it's course. GBs can take forever but this one has been going on for 18 months now with no traction and it's pretty much lost all momentum at this point. I don't even buy SA sets but I've been holding out on this one forever, such a shame.

I've reached out to the MassDrop team twice now without any luck - I'm trying again now :)
