Title: [IC] KAM Playground
Post by: biip on Tue, 08 September 2020, 04:55:32
(https://i.imgur.com/8LK3aai.jpg)

Hey everyone,

I'm very proud to introduce you a new set I've been working for a long time now.
I always had the desire to offer a set that would be suitable for everyone, but beyond that, a set that is suitable for all uses.

My intention here is to offer some dedicated child kits designed for a specific use.
Most of the time, macro-pad (and even ortho) users don't have the possibility to have a well-designed keycaps set for their uses. The goal of this set is to offer a solution to this issue, in a playful way! Same for MOBA/FPS players, music & various content creators… Endless possibilities to highlight the keys they need!

All the icons have been drawn using the same stroke thickness in order to have an overall cohesion.
Font and icons are my own creation though.
I decided to go for a uniform profile since it offers more possibilities on layouts (than a sculpted one), and since KAM allows overall dye-sub and has a nice glossy finish, I thought that'd be the perfect profile to work with.

Samples have been ordered, Keyreative should already be working on them.

Biip is like Bonds+Aaron+Ruth - all home runs, all day. This is such a great concept, and love the breadth of the child kits.

Can we get a Homing Kit for us non-QWERTY folks? KAM Superuser has a great one.

The colours on these are fantastic. I third the request for a Homing Kit. Colevrak kits are great for compatibility on sculpted keysets, but a flat set is just so perfect for anyone who is not using a standard layout.

Additionally, how do you feel about adding a mono legends kit for the special characters, numbers, and shifted characters? Re-reading the description has got all the hairs on my arms standing on end. These feel like the kits that would help me get the legends that I desire on my keyboards.

Seems to me that one has homing keys not used in any layout at all. Specifically I and S.

S can be used for gamers to orient to WASD quickly. But I'll admit I don't know what I is for.

I actually proposed that in the Discord for the gaming kit. If that's the goal, that's fine then. Just trying to prevent redundant keys from entering these kits and making them more of a reach to get implemented.

I initially thought about going for glossy finish tho since it'd look more classy and modern (IMO) :thumb:

Ergo kit has duplicate 1u PgUp/PgDn keys.  Maybe swap one set for Home/End instead?

Just realizing you're using stroked up/down to represent Home/End. Which is a little odd, since Home/End is more of a left/right thing.

But given that Home/End are provided, maybe swap out the redundant 1u PgUp/PgDn with Insert and Delete instead?

One kit, 10 keys, just 0-9. I'd buy a dozen myself.

Really? I guess I don't consider Home/End an up/down thing since the actual operation that occurs with that keystroke is to push the cursor to the leftmost (start) or rightmost (end) character within the line.

I love the colourway.  This set is amazing.

I would love to see a set of mods with coloured legends instead of the current white-only option.  +1 for matte, and +1 for a few more 1.25u options as well

My gut is saying I want a terminal set as well, however I can't think of many good legends beyond terminal prompts.  I use a very similar colour scheme in my terminal to this set's colours, so perhaps I'm just struck by the familiarity.

One point of feedback I have;

The only 40% layouts that uses a 1.75u require two of them, not one (JD45/50, prime_L). Because of this, I recommend adding a second 1.75u spacebar to the 40s kit or removing the one. I realize there is another 1.75u spacebar offered in the spacebars kit, but that's an entire kit that would need to be purchased for the one spacebar. On a 40% no less.

Big fan of the custom font and dots! I hope to see an all dots kit offered!

Consider doing Home, End, PgUp, PgDn like this (ignore the Insert, Delete icons on the left):

This style for Home encompasses both operations that the key performs: moving the cursor to the start of the line (left) in editable text, as well as jumping to the beginning of the document (up) when the text isn't editable or when Ctrl+Home is pressed. Similarly for End.

These icons also resemble the standard Home, End symbols as defined by ISO 9995-7 (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:ISO_9995-7_symbols), which are: ⇱ ⇲.

+1 to matte, +1 to possibly colored legends. Love this kit, and would be interested in buying multiple sets of child kits. I think it could be cool to have some icons for music production/synth in the creators kit, would love ones for envelope, oscillator, lfo, etc.

I would actually recommend keeping a single 1.75u space and adding a 1.75u Lock key instead. This key needs to be added for Minivan, Dimple and Minila support anyway, and since this set uses the same color for alphas and mods, the 1.75u Lock key can be used as a second spacebar on the keyboards you listed.

I'm going to go through the kits and review them in more detail a bit later, but for now this is the feedback I have for the Nomad kit.

Big fan of the custom font and dots! I hope to see an all dots kit offered!

That's an even better idea and I agree!

I'm surprised you've managed to shine up a PBT set.
That's one of the whole reasons I like PBT to begin with, it doesn't shine as easily as ABS. 5 years so far on an OEM profile PBT set as my daily and it's still as clean as ever. Matte ABS though? No thanks. I bought the Susuwatari from Drop and I've already got my spacebar glistening.

Now, if you could make a Dots-only kit for us Planck users, so we don’t have to get 8 Addons kits to fill our boards with dots...

Otherwise this is going to be a pretty expensive GB for me 😅

I'm definitely in. Probably for all the "novelties" icons - all of them! Really smart.

A couple notes/suggestions:

- A couple of macropad recently started including ISO Enter in their small "layout". Would be cool if a couple of novelties icon kits got an ISO Enter key for them :) Even if they're kinda generic.
- More 2.25/2.75u keys in sets please? :D
- +1 for matte ;)

For the audio kit, would you consider adding some things including a few that are more geared toward notation for more coverage? I'm a former musician-now programmer (+1 coding kit btw) and could potentially get my own spouse into the custom keyboard world by making him a Sibelius-oriented setup :)

The things I had in mind for the moment are: an instrument of some kind (violin/guitar maybe), a clef (treble or bass), a time signature, a sharp, a flat, and a natural. Also somewhat subjective, but IMO a quarter rest would be more distinctive than the eighth rest. Most everything else that is notation-specific (slurs, key signatures, crescendos, trills, repeats, what have you) can be pretty well approximated with what's there already, which is great.

Looks like another winner!

I thought I would join some others in requesting a small homing kit for the alt layout crowd:

Also, adding non-homing X, V, and J would serve the same purpose as the additional B in the Spacebars kit.
More
X  -  for Dvorak
V  -  for Colemak DH, Colemak DHm, and Workman
J  -  for QGMLWY

B remains in the QWERTY location for Colemak, Norman, and QWPR.

Edit: saw others have already requested a homing kit.

This trend worries me.

The argument for second B is for typists on Alice layouts who type "incorrect" and also don't know how to customize their layout.

I'd say anyone who would switch to an alternative layouts would also take the time to type each key with the correct finger, or at least choose one side. Additionally, since the default layout is usually QWERTY, they probably also know how to put the key in that position key in whichever place they want it.

The beauty of this kit is that there's so many novelties and macro keys that you could literally put any on the spot which you are not using to type B.

I will absolutely concede this point to anyone who uses an optimized typing layout and still would like to have this key for both index fingers. For the time being, I'd say the whole extra B key is a bad trend and we shouldn't compound it.

+1. I don't own an Alice, so chafes me that I have a gazillion extra B keys sitting around while also being told "you use a weird layout (Colemak), which I'm not supporting" by many designers. I don't want to see even more useless keys added to cater to the Alice crowd (Sorry not sorry).

I don't have TAB or ESC in R3, so I use a novelty for R3; Alice users that use non QWERTY layouts can use a novelty for their not-a-B key.

This set and the typeface you’ve custom designed for it are just beautiful. I can see me wanting to get almost all the various sets. Bravo!

I don’t know if it’s too late to incorporate into this release, but I’d love to see the range of gaming icons expanded upon, perhaps with additional thematic sets in future? I’m thinking a variety of different symbols representing different types of weapon (shield, axe, bow and arrow, dagger etc.) as well as different ‘sci-fi’ weapons, to make it possible to tailor a keyset to specific games.

Anyway, can’t wait to see this one released!

Really cool set here with all of the different icons. I will probably be in on multiple kits. I wanted to give some feedback for a few of the kits.

Ergo
NoPunIn10Did has a great guide for kitting Ergo on KAT (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=105714.0). I have also surveyed over 140 ergo users for keymapping preferences (I plan to post the result eventually when I clean up stuff graphically. I am happy to share the data with you directly though). I think the Ergo kit is already pretty good especially considering KAM has greater compatibility due to being uniform profile. I know you probably don’t want to add too many extra keys to the kits and drive up the price, but I would recommend adding the following 1.5u keys (roughly in order of importance):
I would personally really like #3 to be added since I have several ergo boards that use 1.5u keys on the bottom row, and I think there would be a lot of people that would like at least 1 and 2 (1 and 2 are very common).
Also, it looks like the layouts pictures in the Boardwalk renders would not actually be possible as those cool audio meter level keys in the Equalizer kit picture are 2u, not 1.5u. It would be cool to see those in 1.5u too.

It would also be pretty nice if you included three 1.25u keys (most likely Control, GUI, and Alt/Layer/another Control) for The Boardwalk 65% layout with 6.25u spacebar and arrow cluster.

Spacebars
Thank you for including two 2u spacebars in the Spacebars kit and the Nomad kit. Many designers only include one 2u or one of each color and people have to buy additional kits just for another 2u spacebar. (I don't understand why, considering how common 2u x2 spacebar layouts are in ortho boards.) Also, I am assuming the “1.25” label on the second 1u spacekey is supposed to read “1.00”? Or is there one 1u and one 1.25u? (I hope it is two 1u keys.) It would also be nice to be able to get a 7u spacebar without buying the modifier kit. I don't know if adding it to the Alphas kit would make pricing difficult, but I seem to me that most people would buy Alphas + Modifiers, Nomad, or Ergo. Nomad users might not benefit from getting a 7u in the Alphas, but it would make no difference to regular Modifier user and it would benefit Boardwalk users for the Ergo kit.

Icon Designs for Tab, Backspace, Delete
In the current design the Tab and Backspace icons are basically mirrors, which doesn’t really make sense since they do completely different and unrelated things. The delete key is just an “x”, which I think is ok, but I always sort of think of Delete as the mirror of Backspace. My suggestions would be to remove the vertical line before the Backspace arrow and instead put an “x” or dash or something through the line (<-x-) and then make the Delete key the mirror of that. I tried to draw what I am talking about below. Alternatively you could use the Tab icon with the two arrows and use the current Tab icon for Delete. It might also be fun to include a 1u Trash icon in the Office kit.

And on top of this set there's GMK Awaken, the Boop board, I might as well wire my end of year bonuses to Biip. Is there a way to just become a subscribed customer?

I know its niche, but anyway we can get some oversized Q, A, Z, and P keys like in the 80's After Dark  (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=104913.0) set. I know its a super niche set of keys, but they make some tiny keyboards much more usable.

something like this pretty much has to be a uniform profile. Ok, the base kit could be KAT, but pretty as it is, the base kit is not what this is primarily about. It's about all the novelties for all the different programs and work flows. And everyone is going to use them differently. One person will put the Photoshop "brush" key on B, another will put it on the f row, another will put it on a macropad. Unless you make all the keys the same height, you're guaranteed to mess up the majority of people's conceptions for how to fit them in.

Hey, I finally received the first batch of samples (featuring matte finish) and I'm actually super satisfied by the dye sub quality, the legends being clean and sharp.

Some colors need obviously some tweaking (especially the base color) but I can say without fear that the project will happen, and that I can finally start to work on the different updates and adjustments regarding the kitting of the set :D

New samples will be submitted soon.
I don't think I'll go for glossy finish though.

As usual, I keep you in touch. Thanks again for supporting this project <3

Thanks so much for posting these. I think the photos are great for what they are.

From what I can tell, maybe it would be good to adjust some of the colours for better contrast. Especially the blues and maybe the green. Maybe go with slightly thicker legends?*

In any case, this is very interesting. Would be nice to see a few samples in glossy, should they later arrive, just to help.

*Then again, if the base colour becomes more gray as in the renders, I guess maybe the legend colours don't need to be adjusted much at all.

Matte finish seems sensible. Glossy would surely lower the readability of the legends. I'm still hoping for DSA though.

I'm a little worried about the red legends. They're weaker than the rest in terms of contrast and readability, yet they also seem to 'vibrate' a little, as red/blue combinations often do.

If you make the red darker, they'll be even less readable. If you lighten it while retaining saturation, they'll vibrate even more. If you lighten it while decreasing saturation, it'll no longer look red, but pink. I wonder if you'll end up having to decrease the saturation and brightness of the base blue a little.

By the way, the =/+ legend seems weighted a little too low perhaps.

I think the blue base colour of the keycap material is a bit off from what it's supposed to be, which is grayer/blacker/darker.

So I think we'd have to see the change in base material colour before fully assessing the legends.

Hey biip, I registered an account on geekhack just to say that I'm extremely interested in this. I'm looking around for caps for my first custom keyboard, and this set is just perfect for me. I'm working towards building a Hyper 7 (setting it up with 206 keys; 188x1u + 18x1.5u), so I'd be buying many sets, including particularly the Ergo to help fill out those 1.5u keys nicely. I'm also into the Mac-style symbols, so seeing the 1u and 1.5u "⌘" (command-symbol) keys in the Lisa set (not to mention the option and control symbols in the Ergo set) is great and makes this just an absolute dream after looking around at ways to combine other sets to fill my board in a consistent way while getting what I want.

I've got one piece of criticism and two requests.

First, the criticism. Since I'm getting many sets, I noticed that a group of media keys (icons for {back, play/pause, stop, forward}) is in a whole bunch of kits, including Stream, Audio, Creation, and Lisa. It might make sense to have these in a smaller kit mostly on their own, if only so that I and people like me don't end up with 4 copies of that group! I get that it's a bit of an awkward thing to change, but reduced redundancy is probably worth campaigning for.

Second, two requests: a mono legends kit, and a coding/debugging kit. They've already been asked-for, but I'm echoing the sentiment. Those are basically all I could wish for beyond the beautiful designs you've already presented.

Thanks for reading; keep being awesome.

The CU7 is in GB again, which would probably pair well with this. CU7 is a macropad.

Still wish these were glossy, though. I rarely prefer glossy, but with this set, luxury lickable buttons, it just makes sense.

Oh yes please, add some programming stuff! I'd love to see this on a macropad!

Initially I was like: why? But that's actually not a bad idea.

I image icons for:
- debugging: run, break, step, next
- build, rebuild, execute, test
- (there must be more)

will do :thumb:
still waiting for updates from the manufacturer.
At this point, I'm starting to also consider DSA.

No set for developers/admins? :-(

There are some keys, in Navigation and Creation, that are useful for developers. Navigation has step-into, step-out, step-over, and Creation has a bug key, plus biip has confirmed a "plugin" key via Discord. I agree that a dedicated developer set would be nice, but the keys do exist, and personally I'd be going for the "whole playground" kit that biip has teased that would include a single copy of every novelty.

@biip DSA is fine w/ me!

I'd personally much prefer the initial KAM or a similar smooth profile, as I'm not fond of the "pebbly" texture of DSA. It's no skin off my teeth if DSA is available in addition to KAM or whatever else, but I'd really like a smooth profile.

I can see how texture is going to be largely a personal preference. Though the 'pebbliness' of SP DSA keycaps is partly why they're so matte. Which I think makes them look more attractive and elegant than glossy caps. Though more importantly, this also makes legends stand out more clearly in various lighting conditions. And clarity of legends is obviously of particular importance when talking about macro keys like these.

Though having said that, DSA doesn't necessarily mean 'pebbly' anyway. I have a bunch of different DSA keycaps from different brands, and they all feel quite different. The Signature Plastics standard DSA PBT keycaps feel moderately textured (and, for me, excellent). I have some KPrepublic ones that feel a bit smoother, and some other ones I got on AliExpress that are smooth to the point of almost being slippery. Lastly, I have some novelties from Drop's DSA Astrolokeys set, and those are by far the most pebbly - considerably more so than SP.

In my opinion, DSA is far and away the best option for macropads (and surely this set is first and foremost designed for macropads), for a simple reason: of all the uniform profiles, it has by far the greatest variety of available macro-friendly keycaps on the market. A macropad needs clearly labelled keycaps, yet every macropad is different, so it falls to each user to find keycaps that will translate to the myriad functions of their particular macropad. To this end, nothing on the market comes close to the DSA selection on pimpmykeyboard.com, which has the largest selection of icon- and word-based keycaps, and lets you buy individual keycaps from any of their designer DSA sets too. On top of that, there are quite a few novelty or macropad-leaning DSA sets on Aliexpress and elsewhere.

I'm sure that most people who are serious about piecing together a highly customised macropad have naturally found themselves landing on DSA, just as I did. Not because they particularly love the look or feel of the profile (maybe they do, maybe they don't - either way it's a secondary concern here) but because it opens doors to customisability options that none of the other profiles can.

The keycap selection in this set is very good indeed, but it can't cover everyone's needs, because everyone's needs are so varied. For example, as a heavy Photoshop user, I'm happy to see Photoshop-type keycaps in the "creation" kit, but there are still a bunch of Photoshop tools/shortcuts I use daily that aren't represented there. I'm sure most people would find similar gaps in their particular usage scenarios. If this set comes out in KAM, then we're pretty much stuck with those gaps, as KAM keysets are few and far between, and macropad-friendly ones even more so. But if the set comes out as DSA, it'll be a lot easier to supplement with existing options on the market. Sure, we'll have to accept some color differences between Playground and non-Playground keycaps, but at least the profile will be uniformly consistent and will still feel good to use.

Maybe it’s because I’ve always used blanks for macropads so I don’t worry about legends matching function, but I don’t see much reason to change the profile to DSA just because there are more DSA keysets widely available. I think the vague icons of the Addons kit covers for gaps in the other kits pretty well, and is definitely kinder on the eyes than mixing and matching sets. I do agree that the lack of in-stock KAM does mean you have to commit to the kits offered, though. Personally, I wouldn’t mind some base colour blanks to cover for any missing keys, seeing as the navy won’t match any existing sets. But that’s minor.

Not the biggest fan of DSA myself, but still think the change is a good idea if KAM can’t achieve the right colours or has any other issues (which they always do lol). KAT Space Cadet has been... interesting. Might be a good idea to poll the change.

I can't really imagine using blanks for macropads. It's not like alphas where you have 30 years' of muscle-memory to guide you, making legends not really necessary. I've found that my macro needs tend to evolve as my work and/or workflow evolves, and certain macro keys might only have been living in a particular spot for a few days or weeks, so clear labelling is a must. Though it just goes to show how differently everyone uses their macro keys, as I wrote before. I have a lot of macro keys in my setup (exactly 101 of them as it happens - I just counted), which I presume is a somewhat different use case to yours (unless you have that many too and still don't need legends for them, in which case I ask why bother getting keycaps at all when you could just as easily control the keys with your Jedi powers? :D )

I've found that my macro needs tend to evolve as my work and/or workflow evolves, and certain macro keys might only have been living in a particular spot for a few days or weeks ...

Ah, that's interesting! Having some keycaps only for days at a time is completely alien to me :L I only have 24 dedicated macro keys, not at all like your 101(!!!), and maybe it's because small orthos have put me in the habit of using layers and ignoring legends anyway, but blanks suit my needs just fine. I suppose even my use of blanks is actually an argument for DSA, with the availability of DSA blanks.

Still, I do think people who use a lot of macro keys end up with very specialised uses for them, and it becomes almost impossible to create a standalone set that works 100% for those users. I think this set is more about fulfilling the needs of the most common macros, and having vague keys which can be used for more niche ones, without being a ubiquitous set. I guess it's a set that can work for every use, but isn't designed for every use. If you were to make that, I suppose you should go for DSA and stock colours, kinda like the way relegendables fit that role, so that it can be mixed and matched for maximum application. But I prefer the aesthetic and uniqueness of this set.

TL;DR if not mixing sets then KAM > DSA for me, but Keyreative has a backlog and reputation from hell so I'm open to manu change.

I never said anything about keycaps being active for days at a time. Only that the overall setup tends to evolve over time as I continue to optimise it, and as my own work evolves. So some macro keys may end up shifting positions to different spots, while new ones will occasionally be added to the setup (on a long-term basis).

This was exactly my point. Since many users will therefore need to supplement this set with keycaps from other sets, it makes sense to use a profile that already has decent baseline options to choose from (ie. DSA) rather than one that has almost none (KAM). Mixing keycaps from different sets isn't aesthetically perfect, but many people who are in the market for a set like this may value function over form, in which case it may be a worthwhile compromise.

The MOQ won't be a problem if changing to DSA? One of the nice things that Keyreactive does have is that there is no main kit and every key counts towards the MOQ, so it wouldn't be a problem if most people ignore the base (alphas) kit, and just buy one (or a few) of the icon sets.

That being said, even the alphas look really nice, and I would also buy them for sure if a South kit was available (although I understand that adding Norde & South kits would make this IC compete for the biggest number of kits ever!).

Curious about Ergo kit and redox.
I think KAM Superuser was the only set I remember included redox support for (https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/3099/8088/products/ergo_blanks_1512x.png?v=1612533436), not sure if that we because they went with a blank approach. The 5 1.5u side keys feature appropriate legends that other kits don't contain in 1.25u form.

Would it be possible to add the 10 1.25u variants of the 1.5u in the ergo kit to the ergo kit?
