GMK Protostar

Hi everybody,
I've become a bit too busy to continue designing in the mech community. Janglad will be taking over my projects. Follow him at his website  qoda.studio or here on GH for future updates. Please don't hound him to work on every single set, he's already got a lot on his plate. I will be finishing Astral Light and then signing out. Thanks so much. -NP

- New alpha and modifier key colors to compliment cooler color sequence.
- Increased range of modifier legend colors.
- Chose new modifier legend colors that stand out more, while being mindful of balance across the set and practicality in color matching.

March 11, 2021
- Working on a v2 based on collective feedback.

March 10, 2021
- Version 1.4A and 1.4B (changes to color sequencing)

March 9, 2021
- Experimenting with legend color combos, including the dually suggested gradient look across entire rows.
- Version 1.2 concept (color sequencing and muting)
- Version 1.3 (More saturated color selection. Same color sequence as 1.2)

March 8, 2021
- We established that the version 1.0 early concept drew too much similarity to sets such as Oblivion and Colorchrome (great sets).
- Version 1.1 concept with different legend colors on the modifiers.

I always thought oblivion would be cool with the mods background/legends inverse (so more colorful). Perhaps this can be explored here?

Honestly, if I wasn't told otherwise I would think this is Oblivion with Hagoromo alphas. Then like others have said it also is super close to Colorchrome. I would definitely work on the colors to differentiate it from those two sets.

Perhaps the alpha legends can match the color band of the mod legends. That would definitely differentiate it from obliv.

I do get a diff vibe than obliv tho and it think it looks good.

I do have address the fact that, like all the other IC's that get trashed on in this forum, this also lacks all of the "staples" that the community has come to expect from an IC. I am by no means the IC police or trying to incite anything, but I think it would be unfair to not at least address the fact that this IC is literally 2 renders without any colors, kitting suggestions, or direction. Being that you have been on Geekhack for awhile now and designed sets in the past, I would have expected a better example for our community. I don't mean this to be inflamatory

Since we're at such an early stage we just have the simple render with text mods.

Definitely will experiment.

Truth be told, I've never really been into the "gradient" look across the majority of the keys (if that's what you're referring to).

But will for sure try it out. Don't want to exclude any ideas right off the bat.

Concepts 1.1 and 1.2 look pretty good as well, but as far as the inspiration I think maybe it's moving further away from the whole space battles theme?  I'm thinkin Star Trek phasers/cannons/beams etc and Star Wars sabers, lasers, etc.

I see where it might be kind of hard to strike that balance though to avoid the similarities with the Oblivion set.

Yeah I agree. I'm hoping that as we inch closer to a final design, the inspiration and the set will match enough and from there establish somewhat of a connection. Like Mario and video games.

But who knows! We'll have to see where things go and adjust if need be.

alsooo 1.1 > 1.3 > others. I prefer 1.1 just a wee bit more because I like the color sequence going on there, both great tho.

I’m thinking replacing the grey of the alphas with the muted colours (not the legend, but the keycap).

Just did some drafts that may cover the point regarding the brighter legends as opposed to the muted scheme. Will post shortly.

Will experiment with the colored mods. Like you're saying, I think we may start heading into the children's blocks territory, but who knows! I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Reason I like the 1.1 the most is because the mods has the most color i guess? The newer mods scale from purple-ish to blue-ish but 1.1 scale from green-ish color which imo look better

For me is more the connection of color with the purple and blues of the other keys.
I like the green, but I think that if the Control key was more yellowish (like a lime green) and then Super and Alt start gradient towards yellow would pop off a little more. Just personal preference.
This is also why I gravitate towards 1.1, I think overall it has more colors, staying pleasant to the eyes and in line with the theme.

1. I think having more color representation would fit the theme more.  Not to say that the one sided cool or warm is a bad look, I actually think it's a lovely color gradient, but it might be more suited for a different theme (like a "colors of wintery dusk" type of thing), but doesn't fit the space battle theme as well in my opinion.

Yeah, i think so. R1 is either f-row or num row. The majority of the community is 65/75s. The problem is that in 65s layout, there's only 1 R1 row which is numbers, backspace and a 1u mod key on the right column. Nice format for novelties there, 8 alpha color keys for F1-F4 and F9-F12, 5 mod colors for F5-F8 and F13, the rest is for columns. Very well-thought  :thumb:

Yeah this is one of those tough calls to make. These are my thoughts for anyone in addition to kight who may have the same question/suggestion.

The mod sequence you see in the expansion kit was supposed to be the default mods at one point, but was changed to the current base mods as the set was adjusted.

I asked around and the feedback was split nearly 50/50 on which mods people liked more. I think that the expansion mods are a more familiar color pattern to most people. It's pretty similar to a lot of the RGB light gradient patterns on mass produced gaming boards. But I also understand the other half of the crowd who likes the cooler toned / somewhat scattered look (which is what I personally prefer).

With those things in mind I figured it would be a boon to a sizeable number of people to include the expansion mods.

I'm unsure whether the expansion mods by themselves would meet the minimums. That's why they're in the single kit with novelties. Usually when you buy the novelties, you're looking to have some fun and customize and having the extra mod colors doesn't hurt.

Cost has been a forefront question for myself regarding the new expansion kit so I'm right there with you. I'll be looking over prices from similar kits over the next few days and we can always make adjustment if necessary.

I couldn't tell you that I've got this handled on the first try with absolute certainty. Fortunately/unfortunately I'm not the one mixing the paint  :D

But I've been making it a point for myself to pick colors that are generally considered reasonable to replicate.

Nothing that is too "hyper ultra fluorescent" or too pastel or saturated beyond belief. And colors where we have a little bit of wiggle room so that the set works without us having to make razor thin or unrealistic adjustments to our 9 different colors over and over again.

But then again, everything I mentioned is nothing new so to answer your question directly: I'd like to think I have this handled, but only time will truly tell.  :))

- Yes, I'm currently considering colored novelties. It would be nice to have a splash of color. No concrete announcements on that at this moment though.

Didn't see the old versions, but I just wanted to comment and say that the current base kit is solid. I'll probably buy it if it releases at close to the current version. I'm not a fan of icon only mods, so seeing a good icon+text is nice to see.

I like the current kitting, just give everything compatability-wise in the base kit and have a novelties on a seperate kit

Just stumbled upon this IC. I also have not seen the older iterations, but I love the current design as it is now. Colors are great, and I love to see icon + text mods. Echoing others, I do hope the novelties and mods extension kits can be split to drive the prices down a little!

Did you choose to use the Raul color card for colored characters?
