I can still remember the first time I saw that scene, shocked the hell out of me.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I did clinical research for a while, damn good money if you can qualify for the trials.

I think this is pretty much the only time of day I don't have to compulsively check my phone on every sound. Nice to relax.

Ok, time's up. Where's clack?

new to the scene and I am dead curious about what commands the crazy price to these clackfactory caps in aftermarket sales? I know they are very limited/rare and they are beautifully made, but what drives the crazy mind of someone willing to pay few hundred dollars for it (even if money's not an issue for him/her) knowing that the retail price was much much lower? why won't CF condemn these kind of sales that are making f-up profit margins using his novelties and he doesn't even get a cut from it?

Some people have the money, and view them as art or collectible.  I can't imagine I'd ever pay that much, but then again 2 years ago I couldn't imagine I'd ever pay $50 for a single cap.

A big thing is knowing that you can get out of it at any time.  If people weren't willing to buy them from you again at the same price you paid (or realistically, probably higher), they wouldn't sell for this much.  But all things considered, you can liquidate these crazy fast.  Way faster than you'd think you should be able to, given that they are "just a piece of plastic".

Obviously they are made of plastic.  But they aren't "just" pieces of plastic.  If they were just a lump of plastic we wouldn't buy them.  They are both art (skulls, ogres, eagles) and functional (they can replace a keycap on a computer keyboard).  We pay for that.  Yet some people like to make it seem outrageous by describing them as "just" pieces of plastic.  I was referring to that.  No one here would pay $50 for the raw materials in one keycap.  We pay for the art and the process of turning those raw materials into said art.

Also the fact that art is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so one may not find the beauty in keycaps, and they don't have to.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Upon admiring the Mona Lisa:

"Ah, it's just canvas and paint."

Said no one, ever.

Said Belfong, actually: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=56222.msg1269632#msg1269632

Hell yeah, me and Belfong with the Mona Lisa references!

To be fair, I recalled someone saying it at some point, I just couldn't remember who. rowdy's google-fu is good. :thumb:

Actually I thought I said something similar, maybe in the fake Clacks discussion, about getting canvas and paint and making a Mona Lisa, but the reference I found was even better :D
