Oh yeah! I just wish there was a way to test the switches, but I'm pretty sure the board is Amiga-specific :(

Yes that is right, it speaks a serial protocol specific to Amiga. To get it to work on modern PC there is an arduino based converter.

Another approach that I have been investigating lately for old Cherry are these PLCC to DIP adapters. It could allow you to just drop in atmega in the original controller spot maybe... if I understand how that works properly.

That would only work if the pinout are compatible. It would depend on the chips but it seems pretty unlikely that the old controller chip and an atmel chip would share a pinout.

Hows it any different than pulling the controller out and messily slopping in a teensy with wires? Either way you need to do matrix trace to tell the new firmware what is what right? Granted I am not an expert in this topic... but it seems like it should be possible and a much neater solution to just pop something in a dip socket.

Well I don't know the specific adapter you are looking at using. But in general they do not give you the ability to change the pinout.

So for example on a 44 plcc version of an ATMEGA32 pins 5, 17 and 39 are power pins. If that doesn't match the pins on the orginal chip then the new chip won't be powered.

If you were able to customize which pins are interconnected you'd be a lot closer. You'd probably have to solder in a few passive components to get it to run but that probably wouldn't be too bad.

True, more research is needed but as a concept I think it would be a good approach to have a dip adapter with some socket for a flashable controller like atmega 32u4. It would be such a nice and clean solution to updating old keyboard firmware since so many of them use things like Motorolla ZC86956P or Motorolla XC40910P or Phillips MAB8051AH2P or some similar compatible clone of those on dip40. The only thing I don't know is what pins do what on those and what is good choice for pin compatible direct replacement.

Does it bother anyone else that that's neither the CTRL nor the ALT button? It bothers me a lot.

No sir, I don't like it!
So apt! It doesn't bother me in the slightest  :p
I've seen most people use this key as the Enter key but I like it on left shift, and I think trying to fit the logo onto CTRL or ALT (1.5x/1.25X?) would make it way too cramped. If this ever gets reproduced in PBT or GMK ABS I'm buying another two sets 'cause I love the design and colorway.

Would have been cooler to have split the logo between the actual ctrl and alt keys

That would be ****ing dope - talk to BunnyLake and make it happen so I can buy moar! I'm sure him and Bro Caps worked out something to make the tooling costs possible for this set; there is at minimum Bro Fist, Eyes, and [CTLR]ALT logo custom to this set.
Doubleshot is my shiznit.

Nice! Did that get stuck in the custom or something? That's a long, long time!
