WI (Midwest) Meetup
« on: Wed, 06 August 2014, 22:09:53 »
Okay, this is it, people.  The greatest region-specific GH meetup.   :p

A little disclaimer: I did have a hard time organizing a MN meetup a few months ago. I am confident that being out of school will make this much easier for me.   :thumb:

So the details...
Date: October 25th <-- set in stone
Time: 1:00-6:00pm (tentative)
Location: My house in eastern WI (that's right! I'm opening my house to you weirdos   :-*   )  I will PM everyone confirmed to attend at a later date with the address.

As the title implies, I'm hoping to get some interest from all the Midwest folks. Hopefully someone is willing to make the drive?

Post a comment to express interest or questions/concerns!

Tentative List of Attendees:
  • HoffmanMyster (definitely)
  • CPTBadAss (definitely)
  • exitfire401 (definitely)
  • The_Beast (probably? if he bothers to drive 2 hours)
  • Melvang (definitely)
  • Alexiss (definitely)
  • dustinhxc (if he can make the drive)
  • Joey Quinn (most likely)
  • halodub (probably)
  • Synjin (definitely)
  • cinnamonrollz (definitely)
  • prdlm2009 (probably)

Edit:
Tentative date has been included now.
Date is set, tentative time is up, attendance responses are updated.

If it's during a weekend, I may be able to do it. Just depends on the financial situation at the time.

Madison would work best, but I'd be down for a small drive

Be aware that I only have my unsaver and titanium GH60 with me over the summer. I might have to go back home sometime, so I could pick up some of my other boards when I'm there

I'll be in if somebody wants to charter a private plane for me to fly in from Indianapolis.  We could make a landing in Chicago to pick up anybody from there.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

To address the location issue:

I know it's not ideal, but I figure if we're driving somewhere anyway, a free and reliable venue is worth it.  If anyone is interested, I am more than willing to let you sleep on my couches/floor.

My biggest issue with setting up the MN meetup was finding a venue that didn't cost $200 and wasn't inlikeflynn's workplace ( :P ), so I wanted to just eliminate that issue altogether.

It will be a weekend.  Part of the stage I'm at now is selecting the weekend, so if anyone can offer a time that does or does not work, that will give us a starting point.

Sounds like it might be late October, specifically the weekend of the 25th.  How does that work (or not work) for people?

To the extent of my knowledge, I have nothing going on that weekend. I'll ask my fiance though.

Nice!  That should be fun.  I work with a ton of people who either graduated from there or are going there.

Also, if you are considering coming down for a meetup it would be about a 4 hour drive for you.   :thumb:

I'm an outdoorsy guy fishing, camping, climbing that sort of thing so I love the location.  :D

4 hours actually isn't bad but I don't have a car so I'd need to see if I could take a bus there.

Nice! Yeah, I'm about 15 minutes (normally) from the airport. It's construction season though so going anywhere is like an extra 10-15 minutes -_- I'd definitely be interested in going though when the time comes :D

Alright guys, with a tentative (very probable!) date of October 25th, I'm hoping to get some more solid responses than "maybe".  :P  I know there are still going to be some uncertainties, and that's fine, but it helps me plan things if we know a little more about who might be here.

I've put together the worst list in the world, where everything is a 'maybe', in the OP.  If you want your status changed, make a post saying so!  Or else you will forever be tentative.

Do you have a charcoal chimney?  If not I will bring a nice one for you.  Here is the trick to getting awesome brats when cooking for large crowds.  Have beer with onions very coarsely chopped in a slow cooker just low enough that it doesn't boil, cook said brats on grill then put them in the beer.  The grill will dry them out but the beer puts it right back in.  By keeping the temp above 180 but below 212 the alcohol cooks out but the water don't, for those that have an issue with consuming it.  If not it works great to keep them juicy and good flavor.

What a joker, trying to tell people from Wisconsin how to cook brats

Culver's, it's a done deal.

Also, I will be buying cheese curds.  And some beer.  Oooooh and we could grill some brats!  Oh man oh man oh man.

Best joke I've heard all day!

Not trying to tell him, just offering a method I have used when cooking brats for larger events (around 500 brats).  Mind if I bring up some beer from a local micro brewery?  If is from Millstream Brewing.

Little back story on this stuff.  The first year my dad got a keg for a 4th of July party, everyone was complaining that they don't drink dark beer.  Well, 4 hours later the keg was gone.  He goes and gets a keg of regular Bud and it was still half full the next morning.  But nope, they don't drink dark beer.

All good man,  I think I have had my jimmies officially rustled 3 times in the last 12 years or so aside from the occasional spat with the wife.

Point is good!  And there's a place in town here that brews beer, but I'm not sure if you can get it outside of the restaurant.

I will, of course, have some New Glarus.  Because Wisconsin.  I don't think you're allowed to host an event and not have New Glarus.
