The Sets
Let me tell you about my keyset.

The XDA Belafonte keyset is inspired by the film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. It is a nautical themed keyset that is based on the ship Belafonte. This set was designed by Spooknik, and will be ran though KBDfans. We hope you like what you see.

This is the alphas kit. It contains the keycaps you'd need for any board.

Numpad kit, if you need it.

Extra modifiers kit for additional compatibility. Contains some of the most specialized keycaps.

40% kit. For users of 40% boards, Planck, and the like.

Novelties kit, which I thought up in a dream, actually.

International kit, support for UK, DA, SE, NO, FI, and DE layouts. Designed by an engineer from the Chinese space program.

Space bar kit. 7U, 6U (off center), 3U, 2.75U, 2.25U, 1.25U spacebars. The 1.25U space bar isn't suppose to look like that but a 1.25U space bar doesn't exist for XDA.

Spooknik
Dictated, but not read.

Technical Specs

-XDA Profile
-MX Compatible
-PBT ~1mm thick
-Compatible with ISO, HHKB, WKL, TKL, 65%, 75%, 40%, Planck, and more
-design by Spooknik  https://www.reddit.com/user/Spooknik/

Why are the alphas so small?

Seems to be the same font size as modifiers… I don't really like it that much either.

Will the legends actually be set in Futura? I’m a huge sucker for that typeface.

The intent was to have a inform look, so yes everything is in the same size font. It doesn't help that I made the renders different image sizes so the alphas look tinier than they would compared to the modifiers. Here's and older render with everything together:

Yes  :D

Love the colors. I wish I were more into the profile else I'd be in. Great movie too.

This looks great! Would an ergodox set be possible? Even if they are just blanks in the accent colors.

I like it, but agree that the font size is a bit too small.

Is 1mm thickness normal for XDA caps?

Yes, I believe so. All of my XDA Canvas keycaps are 1mm.

Well, I'm a MASSIVE sucker for "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou" and this theme is definitely something meat and subtle. Just like I like it!  :thumb:

Looking forward for more info. :)

I'm also a bit afraid about the possible final render of some novelties:

  • the outline text, I wonder if the strokes aren't too thin.
  • the contrast between yellow and white on the 1.25u mods

Also, I would make the red cap in strokes too so it'd fit better with the other icons.

Btw, was wondering, what about Futura license? Can you use it for commercial purposes provided you have bought it?

Excellent feedback thanks for taking the time to give it.

The strokes on the outline text may very well be too thin, we need to talk with the manufacturer and see what's possible. The 1.25U novelties, I'm thinking of changing the yellow to red. This is also exactly how they appear in the flim.

On the subject of the Futura license, my CorelDraw came with the font which from what I understand you can use any font included in this product in a commercial product.

No problem, always a pleasure to help on design stuff.
IMO it'll look better with red indeed. But you could also look if you can make revere dye-sub and get like yellow and white legend on blue keycap for example.

Good to know for the Corel Draw licence!

Hello everyone, we've update the post with some revised designs for the kit. I took a lot of the community's feedback into account. Thanks to everyone who took the time to give me their input. Hope you'll find the new changes are an improvement.

Can we get an Ergodox kit? I'd much rather see this on my daily driver instead of a board I only occasionally use.

I'd be fine (and personally would prefer) if it were just blanks in the same colorway.

any way to get a control/function key in the Estaban set as a sub for caps lock so we wouldn't have to buy a whole Pele kit for it?

Very interested in this set, the revisions are great. I'm wondering if it would possible to add an extra 1.5u SYS key to the Jane set (to achieve correct HHKB style legends, i.e. 1u alt, 1.5 sys)? That way I'd be covered by Zissou, Esteban and Jane...

I'm building a 40% keyboard, I would need Zissou + Jane only if Jane has 1.25u SYS... (or blank)
guess I will have to grab Kingsley also  :D

Bump! This is one of the most beautiful sets I´ve seen. Huge plus with the Klaus Kit for us scandinavians :)
I´m definitely pre-ordering this as soon as it becomes available.

This set is GREAT without being too obvious. Some of the other Wes Anderson world sets are a bit garish for my tastes, but I love the color combinations here.
Looking forward to GB phase!

It’s being run in GMK on drop right now. https://drop.com/buy/drop-mito-gmk-belafonte-custom-keycap-set

Worth mentioning that it's a different set and a different designer.

Mmmmmmmmm! Finally another XDA set on geekhack that I can find. Been really liking how XDA and DSA look and feel, will need more of this profile for sure.
