Been working on this since I saw Isle of Dogs last month. I absolutely loved the typography and wanted to use the typeface and colors in a set.
The type uses Lineto's Brown in Bold Italic just like the film and alphas also include hiragana characters. Many SP produced keycaps use their very large text but I've always been a fan of smaller, more minimal type. It's my first time designing a keycap set so feedback and advice is appreciated! Would be so cool to make this real.
Also noting I have the font licensed from Lineto, and my design doesn't infringe on any copyrights (no images or assets from the film, colors are not exact).

As far as I can tell, this would need to have either reverse dye sub modifiers, new double shot moulds and pad printed secondary legends for the alphas, or a mixture of pbt alphas and abs modifiers. This would be ambitious, expensive or undesirable, respectively.
Reverse dye sub should be possible. Look at DSA Starry Night, that has some super high quality reverse dye sub.

That's true, the novelties in starry night are pretty next level and it would be cool to this done through a manufacturer with similar dye-sub skills.
It also seems doing new moulds on SP's DSA isn't quite as bad as I'd thought—that weird 2077 keyset on massdrop wasn't so expensive at lowish MOQs. The secondary legends would still need to be pad printed separately, though.

Yeah, when people ask for HHKB support they largely mean the style of layout since it's become fairly popular to use on custom MX boards. Though with the easily accessible topre-to-mx sliders around, it also refers to the HHKB itself too other than the spacebar.

And just as you replied the forum added this topic to a list that gets listed in the "Show new replies to your posts" view when there are new replies. It is in the header under the GH logo.
I often miss emails so I just reply to the threads I want to follow.
Depending on the custom colors and novelties of a keyset the timeframe could be 4-12 months after GB phase begins, sometimes even longer if the set is super customized and has loads of QA. Some keysets spend years in IC phase too.

looks fantastic so far, loving the alphas, keep it the way it is. I agree with the yellows, it could be a bit brighter but maybe that's because how small the texts are? As for the red, yes, moar red!!!

Yeah it’s probably an optical effect from tiny yellow forms surrounded by black. I’ll take a closer look and figure something out when I get my hands on the samples!

Ah, thanks. I'd missed that, and was wondering about the line "as this profile will replace DSA profile in our lineups" from the zfrontier post.
Was sort of hoping it might, tbh. Looks like I'd find it to be an improvement to some of the aspects of DSA (texture, shape, thickness) that I'm not so fond of.

Just got the samples from zFrontier and overall things are looking great! The surface is actually very lightly textured and same as the sides (feels completely smooth to the touch), no complaints there.
Because I'm happy with the surface quality, I'll be sticking with DSA for this set to keep things moving, but will definitely look into KAM profile for future projects!
– I missed the apostrophe character when prepping my .ai file, fixed that already.
– Esc and Enter keys are basically bright orange-red... need those to match the hiragana legends' red and we're gucci, it'll really make a huge difference.
– The yellow is seeming dull in the modifiers is because the text is rendering too thinly, same goes for the esc and enter keys. Also need to push the color slightly warmer to match the design.
– Alpha black legends are slightly too thick, red legends are spot on though.
– Also oddly enough, the function keys and space bar are a different white than the alphas. Will get those matched up.
I think the hiragana looked great in the renders but turned out a little too thick in the samples. I think they need to be slightly thinner to not look like one mushy blob
I actually made them slightly thicker in my designs to match the stroke of the black letters, they look pretty good to me in person. Maybe the sample photos from zFrontier were a tad fuzzy.

Changing from DSA definitely removes the option to customize/mix which sucks, but KAM is closer to the original vision and better quality overall - also homing keys are pretty huge for usability.

I totally get that concern, I haven't handled any KAM samples but I'm hoping the claims are true and look forward to seeing how any new samples turn out. The larger top surface, thicker walls, and tighter spacing between keys are pretty attractive on paper. I don't see why the dyesub quality/detail would be any different since it's still the same manufacturer.

Yeah KAM is uniform, I meant mixing alphas/modifiers with other DSA sets which would look a bit odd with the height difference.

DSA or not, I don't mind trying out something new, especially with this set. That means group buy won't start until another 2months correct?
I was told 1-2 months, but I did ask for a more specific timeline, will update when I get that info!
Edit: Timeline is a bit uncertain - if the KAM tooling is green lit this weekend we can get the samples made pretty soon. Also we're probably looking at a group buy start after Starry Night R2 is shipped.

Was told they were running injection samples more than a week ago but didn't get much more than that, will see if there's updates on monday!
Tuesday edit: haven't heard back yet, but I'm guessing if samples were successful and Starry Night R2 is still on track for September we should be seeing KAM Inu samples around or after that time
8/24 edit: Got an update from zFrontier, initial KAM samples were successful and Starry Night R2 on track for late Sept/early Oct which means we should be able to ask for samples around then

My guess is that the hiatus is more because the designer is busy than because there are issues with the KAM profile, but hopefully we'll get an update eventually.

Hopefully will hear back from zFrontier when that time comes, afaik this set is next in line! Revisited the set recently and bumped up the alphas in size since they were getting lost amongst all the other same sized legends. I have no idea! All I know is this set is next in line after Starry Night, and the manufacturer has had issues with the molds or something which has led to a lot of delays. Will fix up some new renders when I know more about GB timeline.
Man zFrontier is just the worst. I'm still waiting for a set of keycaps ordered in March 2018. I really should've just filed a chargeback and moved on.

Got the KAM samples last week but they were done using the old legends file. I've already sent Keyreative the needed fixes but overall they look great. The colors are much improved and the feel is much better than DSA. Waiting on new samples with the updates (thicker yellow legends, larger alpha legends) and then we can kick off the group buy shortly after.
The Key Company and Mykeyboard.eu will be the NA and EU proxies respectively.

KAT and KAM 100% different tooling - even R2 shapes are different.

Edit: Now that I think about it, the accented 1u Esc key might as well be in the Alphas kit as well. You never need more Esc keys than you need Qs, Ws etc and it's in just about every mod kit.
Another Edit: Thinking about the Exotic kit a bit more, I think I would prefer it if Fn and Ctrl keys of size 1.5 or higher said "Function" and "Control" instead. The 1.25 Fn key could also say "Func" imo.

Here's a suggestion: Put the 1.5u Tab key in the Alphas kit (and remove it from Base Mods & Ergo kits) and put an Esc and a Return key in the normal mod colors in the Exotic kit. Why? Because this has several nice benefits: This would make the Exotic kit a _standalone HHKB Mod kit_!! Which would dramatically decrease the cost of getting this set for an HHKB layout without inconveniencing anyone else. Similarly, someone who wants to outfit two keyboards with different layouts with this set has a high chance of only needing one each of the Base Mods and the Exotic kits, since each mod kit would provide Esc and Return keys and the Tab would be provided by the Alphas, which one naturally would have to buy twice. Lastly, the Exotic kit would not only serve as extra mods for exotic layouts and a standalone mod kit for HHKB, but also as a de-accent kit (due to including non-accented Esc and Return) which are often very popular. Alternatively, the Esc and Return keys in the Exotic kit could have the mods base color but a different legend color, like red (my preference I think) or white, so that they're still accents, just more subtle ones.
What do you think?

Hey, unfortunately kits are already locked in and quoted. We're getting pretty close to the GB date and focusing on other details at this point.

I believe this makes this project the second KAM keyset to be release after Starry Night. As an owner of Starry Night, I can tell you that I am a huge fan of that extremely glossy profile (glossiest keycaps on the market by far) and "the thickness of it" (/bateman). Very very big fan of KAM and those who have not tried definitively should.
Looking forward to Dec 1st! Glad to hear pricing is going to be reasonable.
By the way, KAT is nothing like KAM in terms of texture. It's very grainy and porous in comparison.

I have zFrontier’s Intl store pricing, but TKC and mykeyboard are still working on theirs and I’d like to wait to announce those three at the same time. Also Deskhero.ca just joined as a vendor so that pricing will come a bit later.

Oh yeah will probably size those up to alphas, also swapping in proper divide and multiply glyphs before I submit the final template.

aaaah much better imo! now I'm wondering if the F keys should have the same size as well, 2-3 tiny characters are obviously never as lonely as 1 tiny character on the numpad but it might still look better if all alpha-colour keys that don't take up 2 lines consistently have the same font size.
