USB Mini Wear Out!!
« on: Thu, 29 March 2018, 02:53:31 »
I was wondering and its something I been wondering for a while. Supposedly USB mini has a limited number of plugins and unplugs before the port becomes lose/breaks. I am wondering has anyone ever seen or had this happen to a board? I am going to assume there a fair number of geekhacker's that take there board to work daily plugging and unplugging it. I would assume that would put a ton of wear on the board over time.

From reading around the 'new' mini B (with slopey sides) is good for 5,000 plug/unplug cycles.  Assuming a 5 day working week that's about 250 a year, so the plug should be good for 20 years - it's probably not something you need to be worrying about.

All connectors/buttons/pretty much everything is going to have a lifespan that can be somewhat measured as mean time before failure.  From my experience the problem with keyboard/other usb connections is more due to user error. If you are not careful with plugging and unplugging the connection you could twist or bend it causing premature failure.  Actually replacing the connector is usually straightforward as long as the PCB is not crowded.

Every connector has a finite number of mating cycles. Anything with moving parts will break eventually. On the bright side replacing a port is easy and cheap!

The reality is..

You'll unplug that keyboard maybe 10-20 times,

Then you buy a new keyboard

Then this one goes on the shelf..

So ... no, it's never going to wear out.
