Topre o-rings to silence the upstroke. Seems like an interesting article, but yet I've not tested it!

KBDfans topre silence

Hey, thanks for this post. I am actually going to order a set and see how they work. Just received a new 87U and its extremely clacky, I want to silence it a bit. I was looking for dental bands but the thinnest I could find were 2.5mm and I absolutely did not want to try those (even though they are cheap). These are much thinner, and as they might not be as thin as hyperspheres, they might work just as good. Ill post a review if I remember once I receive them.

Those look like what come with the royal kludge (topre clone) boards.

Many people didn't care for them and removed them.

you can get 5000 dental bands for a bit more

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Orthodontic-Dental-Ortho-Elastics-Bands-Penguin-Force-3-5-OZ-5-16-5000pcs-bag-/272566301980?hash=item3f7637b51c:g:T-YAAOxy-WxTBc1N

Just a heads up those are the wrong size, you want 3/16 not 5/16.

Maybe I should say in my opinion....seems like everyone has their own when it comes to this haha.

i've used 5/16 in the past myself out of preference but people can afford to buy a few different sizes

Here's a thought, I wonder if anyone has used different sized bands on different keys like one size for alphas and one for modifiers. :D

Hmmmm I seriously think this will be too thick, I even find hypersphere a tiny bit thick, but I guess at that point it's getting close to the physical limit.

In a perfect world, if they can make something that's half the thickness of hypersphere ring that would be perfect.

The problem of being too thick is that it reduce key travel, and it will intrude into the tactile point and as it gets thicker and thicker it will eventually eliminate the tactile bump (unless linear topre is what you want, it sounds good on paper but in reality just feels weird).

I don't know that's just my opinion.  :P

I've tried two different kinds of rings on RealForce RGB boards. First I transplanted the rings that came on my Noppoo EC108Pro. Second I installed Hypersphere rings. There is definitely more tactility in the first case compared to the second.

So, any rings that come from Chinese sources (like Noppoo, Royal Kludge, or Plum boards) and Aliexpress will provide the most tactility. Hypersphere rings will reduce tactility a bit but still leave enough of it that the switches don't feel like linears. However, given the thickness of even the lightest dental bands (2.5oz), I expect they would reduce tactility almost to the point of linearity. But I won't know for sure until I try them myself.

I'm happy that the aliexpress clones have a smaller effect on the tactility. Maybe this is caused by the shape, where rounded o-rings go/seat deeper into the housing than a flat washer.

I have those on my plum. And the effect on tactility is absolutely minimal.
I've tried it on one or two keys.

Will probably remove them completely next time I'm cleaning my keyboard

Ew to all of this.

Either get Hypersphere's rings, RF Silent Sliders, or nothing at all.

I suppose that it's a good thing if the effect in tactility is minimal. Are they effective in reducing the noise?

Why do you hate the aliexpress orings? Don't they work?

I transplanted the bands that came on my RC930 over to my Novatouch. I didn't notice any reduction in tactility and I am happy with the results. For what it's worth, I tend to be a heavy typist who bottoms out almost every keystroke, so slight changes in tactility easily go unnoticed.

I tested my keyboard yesterday with one of those decibel meter apps.
And I averaged on 37-38 dB, maxed on 50 dB

Quite quiet if you ask me.

My Outemu blues are around 65db.

That is impressive the ambient noise in my office is ~45db according to the smart tools app.

Early in the morning while I'm the only one int the office it's around 20ish dB.

Middle of the day maybe it jumps to some 30ish.

However there are only 6 of us in the office and were all wearing headphones, so not much noise.

In the open space however. It would easily top 70dB how loud would it become.

Hence why nobody was bothered by my old outemu with blue's while I was sitting in the open space. :)
