Title: [IC] Kailh Box Velvet - 62g Box Linear switches
Post by: chicagoboss25 on Wed, 14 March 2018, 23:10:00

Ever feel like black switches are too heavy and reds too light?

Then I've got something for you :)

I'm working with Kailh on a medium weight, 62g-ish bottom out, box linear switch. Of course, the stem color will be a dark seductive shade of velvety red (we really like red keyboard stuff over at Desk Candy (https://www.deskcandy.xyz)).

Anyone interested?

I'm interested in about 550 of those springs to put into box jades. I love the big tactile bump, but a medium weight spring for modding any box switches would be awesome!

I agree with this, I need a slightly heavier spring in my jades for them to be perfect. Hopefully we can get just the springs.

:thumb: I think that's probably doable, I will ask Kailh about standalone 62g springs as well for spring swapping

If we can do this, I am totally in.

Would you be down to beta test? I am working on getting samples of both the switches and the springs from Kailh ASAP

Am i missing something?  Do kailh box switches have a different style spring than cherry mx?  I feel like the easiest thing to do would be just swap out springs.

Or is the point to just add one more color of box switches?  I havent personally used box switches so am honestly not sure.

Interesting.  Thanks for the info.  I still think it would be simpler to find a manufacturer for springs themselves, but hey its not my IC :D

Oh for sure.  Things are just getting out of hand with all these colors...  was easier when the options were blue/red/brown/black/clear/green.

i still can't keep track of all the types of gaterons

so many more options

i remember even before clear/green were really common options

Interested. But you know what we really need? PCB mount kailh box bottoms, so we can stop having crooked switches with all the Swiss cheese plates out there.

Nice! I think there is a market for the in between weight.

Just as a heads up, Kailh will not sell just the springs. I have been working with them for the past 6 months or so trying to get them to sell me BOX springs and they wont budge on that.

I am working with a spring manufacturer right now, and just trying to get the details ironed out, but there is no ETA or more info on that at all and I am not trying to hijack your thread.

:)

Hijack or no, I'm really glad for your update! You're my hero for giving enthusiasts the ultimate tactile Cherry mount switches. More spring options will be the "cherry on top," and I look forward to trying them out when ready.

Chicagoboss, best of luck in your pursuit of an ultimate linear box switch. This is a great time for keyboard enthusiasts!

Thanks! Yeah I just heard back from Kailh and they said their tolerance is so wide on spring weight (+/- 10g) that they cannot produce an in-between weight because 62g falls within their tolerance range for box blacks :/

I might just put this to rest then since mgsickler is working on custom springs already though TBH kailh box switches are a PITA to open up so maybe we can also find some way to make that process easier for modders too.

Interesting.  Correct me if I am wrong, but aren’t the box blacks 70g bottom out, and (at least most of) the box heavies 80g bottom out? That’s technically within the +/- 10g I would think. Is it just the 2g difference that is the issue? I wonder if a 60g bottom out as opposed to 62g would make a difference to them?

I was curious about this too. I have some nice homemade levers for opening Cherry switches, but I haven't tried to figure out how to open the Kailh switches yet. Can a tool be produced to make that process easier?

This is one of my new years keyboard wishes.

More on topic, I'm liking the sound of slightly stiffer jades so the spring swap would be glorious.

Also I heart linears, so I'm also in for these (though I never found the reds too light =/  )

Comparing the Kailh Box Black to the regular Kailh Black it's apparent that they have roughly the same bottom-out weights, but with much more resistance right at the top of the stroke. I'm not sure if this is because of the springs themselves or some kind of interaction with the plastic tactile nub thing.

Not sure if that makes a difference at all. I'd personally be in the market for a "steeper" Box spring, that starts out much lighter than Box black but gets about as heavy at bottom-out.

I think sprit (https://spritdesign.wixsite.com/sprit) made kailh box springs and they are available to order starting just today. they come in 35, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 80, 100g in weight.

So, it's the Kailh Box version of Gateron Yellow I take it. The Yellow bottoms out at around 65g.
Though considering how smooth Gateron Yellow is, I guess the benefit here is less wobbling and some degrees of water-resistant?

Pff. You call yourself a Chicago boss but you ain't even from Chicago.

Regardless, I'm down. I wasn't keen on pulling the trigger for some Kailh box blacks for my next build, and was going to swap out springs for some SPRiT Kailh Box ones around that weight anyway, so I may as well just wait.
