Looking for a Tada68 plate .dxf
« on: Wed, 14 March 2018, 21:48:38 »
I'm trying to design a very slightly custom plate to fit a Tada68 and having some trouble designing a dxf that I feel confident in. The only modifications I want to make to the stock plate are to have cutouts for SMK switches, add support for Costar stabs, and change the modifier key cluster to the right of the spacebar from 3x1u to 2x1.25u. The dimensions and position of the screw holes would be exactly the same as stock.

If anyone has a .dxf for a stock Tada plate, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could share with me so I have a reference to go off of. Alternatively, if anyone can provide help designing the plate, that would be great too.

Thank you!

Use this: http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/

Then plug the raw data into this: http://builder.swillkb.com/

And then tweak as needed for screw holes in fusion 360 or another program that you can edit .dxf files on.

change the modifier key cluster to the right of the spacebar from 3x1u to 2x1.25u.
That would leave a 0.25u gap between the modifiers and arrow cluster. Am I right?

It would be 0.5u. This is what the layout looks like - https://imgur.com/a/4h11c

I'm leaving these coordinates here for future reference, they are the holes centres.
Code: [Select]
[-23.8,0];[-128,38.2];[34,38.2];[114.3,38.2];[-127.5,-19.2];[107.5,-19.2]
This is your KLE.

And this is your plate.
Please print it on paper and put it on top of your PCB to see if everything matches.

Thank you so much! This is perfect! I really appreciate you taking the time to do this  :thumb:

I'll be receiving the PCB in a few days so I'll make sure to test it.

So unfortunately I don't have the PCB to test the .dxf you provided with just yet (shipping got delayed for a few days) but I was able to print out the design and see how it fits with relation to the screw holes in my Tada aluminum case. I'm not sure they match up 100%. Most notably the holes that seem off on the design are the one in the bottom left corner and the one to the right of the spacebar cutout. I'm curious how you determined these positions. Did you by any chance use this diagram on the KBDFans site? https://kbdfans.myshopify.com/products/tada68-plastic-case AFAIK the plastic case has the exact same measurements as the aluminum one. From what I understand these numbers represent the distance in millimeters between hole centers. I measured the distances on the dxf you provided and they don't match up exactly.

I think that there's a good chance the discrepancy wouldn't cause any major problems, but I want to get as close to perfect as possible. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Do you think you could measure the distance? I should be able to fix it.

I'm curious how you determined these positions.
Eyeballing. I don't own this board so I had no other option.

Did you by any chance use this diagram on the KBDFans site?
I wasn't aware of that diagram. That should make everything easier.
By any chance, is there at least one hole in the proper position? That would help me placing the others.

Regarding measuring the distance - I may have been mistaken about the hole on the left, I think only the one to the right of the spacebar has any appreciable misalignment. It looks as though the hole you put in your original dxf is ~1.5mm to the left of where it should be. I'm kind of amazed you got this so good just eyeballing! As far as using the diagram to measure - as I mentioned almost all the holes seem to be in the correct position but I would say that the center-most hole (the one that would go between the G and H keys, is absolutely dead on, if you want to use that as a starting point.

I updated the holes positions with the coordinates from your file, but frankly I was 1mm off the right spacebar hole and less than 0.5mm on the others.
Have a look at the new one and see if everything works now.
BTW, hole diameter is 5mm.

Code: [Select]
[-23.8,0];[-127.39,37.94];[-127.39,-19.2];[34,38.2];[114.33,37.94];[108.06,-19.2]

If I understand the coordinates you posted correctly, I think the [34,38.2] is the one that dictates the hole to the right of the spacebar? If it is, it's the same as the first set of coordinates you posted. I'm not sure what the correct placement of that cutout is with relation to the center point (I think it's [35.59,37.94]), but I was able to position that hole properly with relation to the hole in the bottom left corner using the measurements that the KBDfans diagram had listed. In any event, like I mentioned before the difference is marginal (and possibly trivial). The dxf I have now seems to be perfect, so thank you very much again! You definitely helped me and I'm sure plenty of other people in the future who might be trying to do the same thing.

Hi,

I'm glad you figured out and I hope you're happy with your plate now.
For the record the hole you mentioned is at 114.33 on the X axis.

Enjoy.

looking at getting a tada plate cut soon.  Is there a final .dxf version of the plate that has been tested and works?  Also, sent you a PM :)

Did you get this made? Did it work okay? I'm looking at exactly the same plate layout - are you able to post your final dxf?

Yeah, I eventually did get it made with Laserboost and they did a great job. The plate came out perfect. This is the final file that was used - https://www.dropbox.com/s/9mjqu7ttt1f97pz/Tada_v4_converted.dxf?dl=0

They sent this back to me after "converting" it to work with their system (they said they exploded all the lines and ungrouped them) so I'm not sure how editable it is in this state, I never bothered to open it and check. If it doesn't work for you I'll try to find the original.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

For the guys that printed the plate with the 1.25 modifiers and the gap, do you have any picture to see how it looks?
I'm very interested and it would be great so see it before I pay for having it cut.

Thanks!
