I did game but enjoyed building computers and messing abut with alternate operating systems too.
Landed up at a non IT campus so not surrounded by likeminded people, didn't concentrate hard enough to get good grades, chose a degree that wasn't specialised enough to get a job without relevant experience, didn't make any lifelong friends, and to top it off I'll probably still be paying off my student load when I retire.
In summary 2/10 - would not recommend.

not a student i just finished primary school. but that is very sad, i wish there wont be only "gamer" ppl in my school so something like this wont happen to me
-
I went to game design college because I was a gamer, but wound up just working in tech. I don't think companies or recruiters know or care what the differences are, if you have a degree in something computer related, apparently all your skills are transferable.

do cs its pretty cool
engineering minus all the drawing

Obviously my degree did absolutely nothing to help my career, but I learned a lot and took on a ton of new skills. Despite becoming an abject failure at life over the following 7 years.

I really thought about getting into tech but my brain is just not good with advanced math. I got a business degree and have a job that blends my love for design. creativity, business and helping people.
I am in the process of deciding if I want to get my MBA.

i am a gamer because i went into IT :) i was not a gamer before and far less of a gamer now that i am not at school surrounded by gamers anymore
-
My degree is in data science and I got into because I really like applied maths. I'm not a huge gamer, but ironically, I often use games to train reinforcement algorithms.

I mean.
I was a gamer before I started in IT, now I do everything else. Sure I play once in a while but it's definitely not like I used to. For one I can't sit as long any more, I get restless, gotta do something away from the PC, guess I can thank the ex wife for that habit. And for number second, my concentration skills and aim are **** compared to my young self and it's noticeable and I hate it. :P
I didn't even know I wanted to work in IT though it just sort of happened. Went from internship to getting hired and have just kinda stuck around for 9 years now. 10 this coming February, that is if they don't cut my ass because of the budget before then.

I was a gamer since I was 8 years old. From the moment I saw a video game, I knew I want computers to be main part of my life.
Went to uni, got Masters degree in IT (Networks), but I've been working whole life with Data and I like it.
So yes, games showed me that computers are amazing and I decided to be IT cause I wanted to be part of this world.
Now I play games very seldom, but still like it. For years I was a gamer, PC modder and for last 17 years also a keeb enthusiast :)

Never went to school for IT, just have always loved tinkering & modding computers. Only thing I did originally go to school for was Graphic Design and apprenticed as an Automotive tech.

i was also a gamer for years now.i just started middle school for IT not just because i love games but also as a genuine tech enthusiast. keeb enthusiast for only a bit more than a year tho, the funny part is that being on a budget (too poor for razor) actually got me into keyboards loll

The question is actually easy to answer, only a small minority has the necessary will and enthusiasm to take the leap into the IT industry. This applies above all to people who are specifically motivated by computer games. For me personally, the latter does not apply at all, for me it was always much more impressive to automate things or to develop problem solutions. Gathering information and combining it to find solutions to problems that are often quite complex has remained an ongoing challenge to this day. And no, I can't call myself a "keeb enthusiast" because of that, for me the interface between man and machine is extremely important, but only for anthropotechnical reasons, less because of aesthetics. I therefore see the creative design of a keyboard more as a gadget than as an extension of its functionality. You don't really have to participate in the fetishism and mostly senseless competition between consumers in order to impress people you don't even know. ;)
