Rainbow Crapbag Special layout. As in the Mail thread, i'm just going to link the imgur album here.

Wrong thread :p
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It is actually a transblue Clack :)

I guess the black anodizing of the case made it seem a bit purpley.

So I decided to finally put the sorbothane sheet I bought onto my Infinity using the little piece of acrylic I cut to be able to mount things beneath the PCB. It's pretty crazy how much it reduces the sound of typing.

Also added silicone foam non-slip strips to the bottom of the board. Probably absorbs even more vibration and sound.

Still using those solderless Orange SKCM Alps with no problem. ;D

Nice mod, have you ever thought about trimming the rubber a little bit to hide the uneven cut?

Do you mean on the sorbothane? It's super hard to line up. I cut out all the necessary areas for the serial pins and the screws and had it lined up right the first time, but it's very temperamental :P I dunno though! Since it is mounted now, trimming it should work okay.

I put some lead weights meant for fishing, like these

They initially didn't fit, as they were too tall, so I just hit them with a hammer a few times to flatten them a bit. Then I stuck it inside with duct tape, so they don't rattle around.

Very ghetto, but the added weight is so worth it :D
It's incredible how $2 worth of lead weights makes something feel so much sturdier.

It's so stately and pretty. The green-windowed numlock key is very interesting.

Added some weights to my HHKB, weighs about 1.5lbs now.

It may be "ghetto" but poor HHKBs need weights for sure. It's why Beats headphones are made with unnecessary pieces; add weight and the perception of value and performance improves, but unlike Beats, the HHKB's performance is no psychosomatic illusion.  :p

I don't know if you can say that I ADDED something to my keyboard, but I restored an old FAME TH-5539 (never seen another one like this before) to beyond its former glory. At first I was debating on just restoring it as it was, but I figured self-expression was best, since I love it so. :3

Some pics from the original owner, well... He got it from a keyboard heap off an e-cycler in Aussieland. Those splotches are bromine stains. Not just something you could wipe off, to my dismay.

They initially didn't fit, as they were too tall, so I just hit them with a hammer a few times to flatten them a bit. Then I stuck it inside with duct tape, so they don't rattle around.

I would use non-lead sticky weights meant to balance automotive wheels instead.  Easier to work with.

Proximity to lead doesn't cause cancer.  :P  As long as you don't lick it, you'd be fine.

I don't want to know how much lead I've accidentally ingested through fishing.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

Wouldn't that put far too much height on the switch and need a custom plate and casing though? Interesting anyway but in my opinion looks like a lot of wasted money :X for what you got anyway

That's the bottom of the board, my friend. The top is flush. The bottom is no deeper than the USB port as you can see. :)

It already works through happenstance on my Infinity because of its tight through hole dimensions! Solderless Alps with backlit compatibility to be specific. :D

This is testing and working though! Just waiting for my carbon fiber plate.

That's awesome,  expensive, but awesome.

Would those sockets get much cheaper in large quantities?

Ahh right that makes sense now I was wondering why you would go to that lenght if you need to make everything else custom too :p

Haha, yeah, that would be crazy. They would be like little switch chimneys. XD Yeah, a big reason why these were so expensive  was... Well, a few. 1) because they were gold plated. Totally unnecessary I know, but for a brand new PCB I thought it would be nice. 2) Because the dimensions. The sockets needed for Alps are a bit bigger and even the slighted bump up affects price. :( 3) ... Well, because the socket type, I guess.

The kind the Smart 68 uses has a small lip that sits on top of the PCB, but I wanted to avoid the height increase, haha. Those are muuuuuch cheaper. I dunno if they would work for Alps though. Never looked far into that kind.
