Reversible inline USB conversion
« on: Thu, 05 January 2012, 19:06:43 »
Bought a PS/2 -> USB converter today, and the keyboard plug was broken, rendering it useless.  Or did it?  It quickly went under the knife.

The plastic was soft and easily cut with a box cutter.

The controller on a 42H1292 (fixed, straight cable).  There have been a lot of size reductions in the controller over the production of these boards.

Precrimped USB cable from another IBM 'board.  Connectors have been backed out of their housing.

Converter's been soldered on and potted in epoxy (to compensate for poor soldering).

Wrapped in electrical tape.

Each individual connector you saw before has been wrapped in electrical tape and plugged in.  Afterwards, a strip of epoxy was added to keep them together.

The line installed.  Note that the lines aren't color coded correctly.  Sorry.

This little "mod" took about 20 minutes, and is fully reversible.  You can swap between PS/2 and USB cables at your heart's desire.  This could very easily be done instead in a ferrite housing for external cables (SDL connectored M's) if you don't have a fixed cord model.
