Title: Do you use mechanical keyboards at work? If so, what switch?
Post by: Sintpinty on Tue, 23 July 2019, 08:01:42
My keyboard, although TKL size would simply not work with the computers i have at school. They're too old.

My daily drivers are Cherry MX Red, or blue if i had one.

At work I have a silent build, with 78g Zilents on alphanum and Healios on modifiers.

There are several others with mechs in my shared office, though, and most have MX Brown with o-rings.

My boss absolutely HATES mechs and I have to work in the same office as him.
So no. Don't need him *****ing all day about the noise.

In the office and at the home office definitely topre, currently using a fc660c at both locations. pretty quiet and feels great for that all day typing experience.

I'm grateful my coworkers tolerate mine, though it's one of the more quiet boards I've had - lubed and filmed Tealios from 1upkeyboards in a sandwich build with wood inserts

That does sound nice.
I've tried a couple switches out at the office and they always get complaints.
He can't stand ANY sound, really. Disrupts his concentration or some ****. He'll never know the joy.

lucky! I only have a few coworkers and neither of them share this interest.. In fact, I brought in an old cherry doubleshot board for one to use (she talked about how she used to use typewriters and clicky keyboards "back in the day") and she was like, "I actually have a keyboard I prefer to use at home that I'll bring in." She proceeded to bring in one of these

Thanks!

The chiclet and rubberdome boards in the office are almost as loud as mine so hopefully no one complains.

You know, I used to find it annoying that my boss would tune people out but perhaps I should be thankful  ^-^

I feel pretty lucky. In my open office, besides me, there are three Ducky (all with Browns), one Tada68 and one KBD75/Ergodox. Some other people with mechs elsewhere in the company. We have our own chat channel at work and regularly have a Friday after-work beer where we discuss keyboards, lol.

I have a Cherry G80-3494 with silent blacks at work right now.  Before that it was a Filco with brown switches, and before that a silenced Topre Type Heaven.  I don't know if anyone in my office has a clue what a mechanical keyboard is, other than possibly the two IT guys.  I work in the health insurance industry, so people here aren't exactly techies. :)

I use a Tokyo-60 with the MassDrop Holy Panda switches in HHKB layout for my main driver at work, but I also carry an HHKB Pro BT that I converted with 55gm domes, lubed rails, and rings/sliders from a Type-S in my backpack for meetings and working out of the office.

I currently use Anne Pro 2 with Gateron browns for most of my work. I'm a college student and spend a substantial amount of time in the library, so I put o-rings on them. Not really liking the o-rings, so I got some 60g Aliaz I plan to swap in. Will do it after I get my nutcracker v2 and lubed them.

I'm using a Massdrop ALT for work and Maxkey SA caps on 67g Zilents are my work standard but, for fun, I'm trying out PYK DSS profile Dolch caps on box jades. The jades click twice which makes them feel more "crunchy" than "clicky" and I'm not sure I like that.

I use Leopold with Mx Clears and Topre Realforce at work. Almost everybody at our work has a mechanical (although most of them have generic gaming boards).

Our company is super mech friendly: every new employee gets high end noise cancelling headphones and money to spend of keyboards, mouse and so on. Some have Mx blues and the noise is not an issue.
Title: Re: Do you use mechanical keyboards at work? If so, what switch?
Post by: jamster on Sun, 28 July 2019, 20:13:46
I've used Topre, Topre silenced, MX non-clicky with o-rings.

No way would I consider using clicky switches in a work environment- IMO that's kind of douchey.

Edit: A couple of posts mentioned that people can wear headphones at work, so noisy keyboards are okay. I disagree- forcing other people to wear headsets all day just to block out the noise from your keyboard is still not cool. Some people might prefer to listen to music as they work, but many do not. Have a noisy keyboard? Keep it at home or in your closed office. Same way you shouldn't be blasting your speakerphone into a public place.

Was using Topre (fc660c) until today. I decided it's time to try my Apple M0118 with salmon Alps and so far it's been all good. The clacking on it is very low pitched and buttery so it blends in the soundscape better than, say, something obvious like MX blues, which someone tried to get in once. It took about 5 minutes until someone complained about it :D

Previously a Pok3r with MX Browns and then more recently a Das Ultimate (also Browns), but within the last two months I picked up a HHKB Pro 2 and added Deskey's silencing rings (went with #3) and 205g0 on the sliders w/ the stock 45g domes. The layout and Topre have really really grown on me. Don't think I'll be looking to change it for a while.

My keyboard, although TKL size would simply not work with the computers i have at school. They're too old.

You may already have thought of this, but just in case: have you considered starting a new thread giving the makes/models of the computers and the make/model of the keyboard you would like to use on them?

I would be very surprised, indeed, if someone on GH could not contrive a way for you to use the keyboard you enjoy with the computers with which you are stuck.

I only wish I had something to offer in the way of practical advice.  However, my own formative computing years were spent cranking away* on one of these:

(https://s17-us2.startpage.com/cgi-bin/serveimage?url=https:%2F%2Fmedia.npr.org%2Fassets%2Fartslife%2Farts%2F2009%2F12%2Fbabbage_wide-33b49c85420b90fae661d0b144144cba7c4224df.jpg%3Fs%3D1400&sp=6786930110087e3be4b8e41064493c80)

...and keyboards did not enter the picture until much later, alas.

My choice would be Kailh BOX Pinks for typing but I don't want to piss people off. There is no real opposition agains mech keyboards, I converted two of my coworkers and doing the work on the rest of them so we can throw out HP crap away.

I use my old Corsair Vengeance K70 with Cherry MX Browns + o-rings. Hoping it'll get stolen or die eventually so I can justify replacing it. Unfortunately it's been pretty rock solid although I loathe the non-standard keycap set that I can't replace.

Nobody cares about the noise, even before the o-rings. Honestly if you really jam on a membrane keyboard it can be just as loud or louder.

Topre Type Heaven. It’s about as loud as the Dells and Lenovos others are using.

What amazes me the most is although it has ABS keycaps, it’s retaining the texture pretty well after 3 years.

I had my JD40 with jailhoused MX blues (skeleton case means they're still quite loud) alongside my hot-glue numberpad with MX blacks for a while when I last worked in an office, people complained when they had to use my computer but were fine with the noise of me using them.

I just bring my QF TK and another cable. The keyboard is filled with shelf liner, so it is somewhat quiet. It's not that much louder, but the noise from MX Browns is much sharper than from a HP rubber-dome (PR1101u, my arch-nemesis).

When I had my own office, I used MX Blues, Matias Clickies, and a Model M.

Now that I'm in a shared area, I've used Box Royals, Kailh choc clickies (not very loud), Outemu Browns, MX Reds, Zealios, and rubber domes. I used a Model M for a month or two, but I took it home because I felt self-conscious. No one complained, but one coworker joked about it once, and the rest of them are probably just too nice to have said anything.

I use Topre. At first, I had hypersphere'd Topre which was definitely the quietest keyboard I've ever tried - quieter than the Apple chiclet keyboards that everyone else around me was using. Then I changed the domes to BKE lights which made the keyboard a louder but is still okay.

I'm technically in an educational environment, but I'm gonna count it as work.
The one time I attempted to use a mech (which was an Eagletec KG010 with Outemu Blues, please forgive me), people got sick of it after approximately three minutes of typing. I was forced to switch back to a bog-standard Dell rubber dome keyboard, which feels alright to type on, but is nonetheless still kind of mushy and stiff.

Either some silent/linear switches or some tactile switches with dampeners should allow you to use something better.

It is the theoretical great-great-grandfather of the computer on your desk: Charles Babbage's Difference Engine No. 2.

If you are curious, you can find a general overview of it here:

https://science.howstuffworks.com/innovation/inventions/who-invented-the-computer.htm

Whilst a near cog-by-cog animated explanation of the far more ambitious Analytical Engine by the wondrous Sydney Padua can be found here:

https://sydneypadua.com/2dgoggles/the-marvellous-analytical-engine-how-it-works/

I was not acquainted with Sydney Padua or her work until I set about writing my reply.  I am grateful to you for your query because, without it, I would likely have remained forever so.  That would have been a great pity because, once I understood just what it was that Babbage was seeking to do with his Analytical Engine, it evoked a sense of awe and wonder that I have not felt for some time.

It truly was one of the great might-have-beens of history.

Topre, RF most of the time. But I tend to swap them once a week, bringing other ones. Most of keyboards are Topre, so its either plain RF, Novatouched RF or NT. Then sometimes I bring my Tealios.

KBP V60 White Fukka.
Although, I type on it below my desk so the sound isn't resonating inside my office and a bit dampened ;D

Tealios and vintage blacks.

Tealios and vintage blacks.

Do you use them while skateboarding around the office?

Cherry MX Browns on a Kinesis Advantage. No complaints yet. My colleagues mostly type on those Apple Butterfly keyboards, which aren't exactly silent either.

I'm pondering getting Kailh Box Whites for my next keyboard, maybe those might be too loud?

Unicomp PC122, or office being in the middle of a noisy workshop no ones complains, and it is not louder than mouse clicks.

However, my own formative computing years were spent cranking away* on one of these:

...and keyboards did not enter the picture until much later, alas.

*When I say, "cranking away," I am not speaking in a metaphorical sense.

Are you from the 1890s or something?

Holy Pandas, lubed Gateron Yellow and Topre 55g.  I rotate between them. No noise complaints  ;D

Mainly using a Canoe with MX Zilent Blacks. Pretty quiet and smooth. Lately I switched up to my FC660C, modded with purple sliders and lubed.

In an open office layout, staying quiet is the best bet.

Well I currently work as a Watchmaker, so not many keyboards there.

But previously to that I used a Model M at work. I wanted to use a F, but didn't want to risk bringing it to work.

So that would be buckling springs to adress your question directly.

Also tried Topre for a while at work.

I do use a mechanical keyboard at work. Currently, my work board is a Rama M65-A with Holy Pandas. I change it up every couple of months or so.

About 1 1/2 years back got myself a Gamdias Mechanical Keyboard. Absolutely fantastic to use, key pressing, response time, durability is all there. Will never go back.
My work PC has a Tesoro Mechanical keyboard, still will not trade for anything else. Productivity is smooth as.

I use silenced topre at work. Haven’t had an issue. A few people use browns and they are noticeably louder but manageable.
