Topre 45g vs 55g

To all topre lovers:

I've recently gotten my first topre board (Leo FC660C) and so far, I'm loving it! I've heard a lot around about 55g topres, and the difference in feel between the two weights. I know switch weight is a very subjective topic, but I'd love to hear some opinions about 45g vs 55g topres. Are the 55gs more tactile? Too heavy? Do you find it fatiguing to bottom out on them? Do you even bottom out on them (I tend to bottom out with every stroke on the 45s)?

Im very interested in this thread as well! Brian at EK told me "I only recommend the 55g for people with exceedingly strong fingers, or who are looking for a good workout. "

If you are coming from Reds / Browns it might be a little bit of a work out.

If you are coming from Clears / Greens it's going to be like you're on vacation.

Seriously 55g is not that bad - definitely lighter than the average rubber dome you see in Corporate America.

It definitely depends on what you're used to. Coming from blues, my 45g topres felt kind of heavy for the first week. Now they feel great.

The 55g feels heavier than both, and is more tactile than the Model M to my fingers at least.  I've commented about the difference in numerous threads, but pretty much if you don't have little girl hands you will thoroughly enjoy the 55g.  The 55g has a very noticable tactile bump at the very top, then a smooth freefall once you pass it, kind of like popping thin bubble wrap every time you hit a key.  It's pretty much impossible to avoid bottoming out on it.  The 45g is too light for me, and I barely use mine unless I am travelling.  You would think it's only a 10g difference, but they are night and day different switches.  Then again, I type all day every day for work, and have done so for almost two decades, so I've built up a bit of hand strength so the key resistance is not a problem

It will all depend on what you're used to using.  55g are a bit on the heavier side but you'll eventually get used to it.  I don't think 45g are nearly as light as some people have said.  If someone can't feel the tactile bump on 45g then they must really slam their keys...

55g will be slightly snappier...but that is always the difference with heavier keys...

Slightly snappier?  LOL.  It's night and day to me.  Then again, I mash my keys as you suggested when typing quickly - 80-100WPM, depending on what it is, which is slower than a lot of you guys, but faster than most people I've ever met.

For me the difference is noticeable but I don't think it is as big a difference as you or a few others might feel.  When people say 45g don't have any tactile bump I just think WTF...Definitely it does.

55g does get a bit more tiring though...really it is all personal pref...someone would get used to 55g if that is what they wanted.

55g is where it's at. You can't rest your hands on 45g without accidently pressing a key.

What caused Topre to be tactile? Is it the spring bouncing back? With Cherry, I see a latch like thing that kicked in but what about Topre?

When I decided to buy a Realforce 87u I was torn between a 45g vs 55g. I own and love my HHKB Pro2 but its 45g key feel is as light as I would prefer. After reading that most people said that the RF 45g felt lighter or even mushy compared to the HHKB I bought a 55g 87u. In the EK product description it states "very stiff and snappy" but when I received the keyboard the 55g was perfect for me. It does not feel heavy or fatiguing at all. I can see why a lot of users recommend the 55g and some even mod a HHKB to a 55g. But then this is a matter of personal preference and is subjective. I think I would have been very disappointed with the 45g RF. But if possible it would be best to try both to know what is right for you.

Shhh....don't tell then its fun to see people get confused over post count that doesn't increase after spamming.

And I reported that guy the other day since he was obviously spamming but mods can only be bothered by other silly things.

I too is  the 55g type.

My RF Variable has next to no mileage and the 55g kept the daily driver's position for 2 years.

You most definitely can...If you're pressing keys keys on a 45g Topre (not the variable..I'm talking 45g uniform) then you must also have that problem w/ most cherry switches as well..

I have issues w/ the 45g variable..because the 30g keys are really really light....but on uniform 45g or the HHKB..no chance of that happening at all....

Is Topre the only switch that have variable on a keyboard? That's a pretty smart design to have lighter switches at the edge for the pinky and middle fingers. I don't think Cherry does this at all.

Well.. I'm not so adventurous to mod. I was referring to buying it stock with variable Cherry switches. Anyway, I just find it interesting with Topre. I don't touch type, so I prefer uniform.

Many Cherry MX-based boards have different switch under the space - my Ducky Shine has MX green under space and MX blue elsewhere.
