Small update:

Belle is trying a new nozzle to get the grey to cooperate, so we have just a little more testing to do before I open the GB.

Hang in there!

I've gotten a few requests in the google form to offer plates and PCBs - unfortunately I do not have anything of my own design, but I will point you to Hasu's stuff - he sells an alps PCB + plate (plate is FR4, which is a great material) that is ready for the AEK layout (and a few others) at a reasonable price. Please have a look!

He's getting new stock after CNY, but they will be found in this thread when he does.

What is FR4? Would you say it's better suited for Alps  in terms of sound/feel as opposed to stainless steel (specifically for orange Alps)?

I have a steel plate on my orange alps board in a wooden case. I really don't think the steel is ideal for the sound, and it's certainly more rigid than I would like. Next build going plastic case with fr4 plate.

edit: fr4 is pcb material

As rubbermilitia said, fr4 is PCB material, so a light but strong plate. Hands down the best sound for orange alps.in my opinion... I use fr4 + orange Alps + ADK64 as my daily driver.

Awesome, sounds like it will be a great combination with this case.

Have you tried brass as well? I currently have a brass plate on my alps boards and think theyre ok. Considering switching to fr4 after reading the above comments

I've only used brass with linear switches, and its just too damn rigid/dense for me. YMMV

So, great news for those who wanted smoother curves! Belle is trying a technique with a smaller layer height for the bezel, which makes it much smoother than it was previously hoped. Check out the pictures. The top half is the old way, and the bottom half of the bezel was printed with the smaller layer height! Mind the rest of the defects on the case, it was set to print quicker on the lower portion to get to the bezel faster, production models will be printed much slower.

Where did you get your plates from?

The answer is literally on this page of the thread

Looks great! Is acetone vapor bath smoothing a viable option for this case? Has it been attempted? What about sanding? Are there any support materials used in its development like HIPS? Not very knowledgeable about 3d printing, but very curious

I'd be interested in the best way to get a perfectly finished (sanded, painted, whatever) product as well. If someone is experienced with finishing and is planning on doing it to their case, it would be a huge help if they did a write-up of the steps they took and the materials used.

I'll ask Belle. As I've mentioned before, XTC-3D is an option if you want a glossy finish. I've used it for some models that needed to be really smooth and it did the job.

I think they refer to the finish texture of the plastic. 3d printing is notoriously -gritty-?

I'm curious as well. I like the idea of the glow in the dark version but I would want a smooth textured case =)

Really interested in this case. However I want to use Lunar AEK PCB for the 65% layout.

I don’t really want to use Lunar metal case. I like the sound from heavy plastic more than the metal one. Is there a possibility of 65% ADK case?

I'm going to run the GB for the 60% first, but it shouldn't be too hard to get a 65% made. We would need someone to be able to make an Alps plate for a 65% as well... So I can talk to some acrylic guys around here and see what's possible.

UPDATE

Got some more samples. I'm going to run a space grey as well as a classic beige (in addition to the glow and translucent models). Here are some photos!

Is that new prototype beige or white?  THe beige in your typing demo seems the same color as the keycap, but this one appears much lighter.

The prototype from the typing test wasn't from belle, it was a 3D printer from an old job, so that color isn't available unfortunately.

I like the dark gray of the two color options.  Probably too late, but could we get a top down view?  Just noticing the tolerances around the caps is pretty big.  What does it look like from above?

Huge fan of the dark grey. I feel a bit weird about getting the version with the apple logo cutout since I exclusively use windows, but it just looks so damn nice.

Also, just saying, I'd love for a version of this sometime in the future that has 1.5u blockers. AEK caps with hhkb blockers would look so dope :) that'd be endgame material, for me at least...
