[IC] PBT Splash
« on: Fri, 04 October 2019, 12:00:04 »
Welcome to the summer of SPLASH!

PBT Splash is a re-run of a classic blue and grey color-way. After reviewing feedback from the community and discussing with the design team we're ready to move forward with the second and final interest check. We've made some major changes to the previous kits that fixed compatibility with a variety of layouts.

Initial Renders & Kits

The quoting process for the kits have now been sent out to TKC. We are waiting for the preliminary numbers and will be updating everyone as we go.

Hey man whatever the people want! There's a lot of love for this colorway, so people have only been thinking on how to improve on it for years.

Maybe because that's just implicit? Everyone just seems to already know that GMK/Cherry profile isn't a uniform profile, so specifying it's sculpted is mostly unnecessary and doesn't really push as a selling point. In this particular case their mention of the sculpt is just in regards specifically to R5 as a changeup to the sculpt.

  • Additional Kit (ISO Etc) TBD
  • Numpad Kit TBD
  • Novelties TBD

While we wait on these TBD to be... D, let me make one comment on the base kit: I think it really needs the R4 End key to be added back (otherwise the HUDE column in 75% and some 65% layouts will be incomplete).

I hope nothing changes from the way you have it right now. I love every decision on the base kit so far :)

Though i would prolly die if you included a colevrak kit (basically impossible to hit moq i know but a man can dream) and 40s kit.

There is a question in the form for which white that you prefer on the alphas. So if it’s overwhelmingly one way or another, the white could change.

Some of the legend and key choices are a bit odd. Here's a list of what I would change:
  • Remove the duplicate R1 Insert key; as far as I can tell, it doesn't do anything.
  • The longer 1.25u OS keys are Win, but the 1u ones are Super? Seems odd. I'd suggest going with Super on both, or System on 1.25u and Sys on 1u.
  • A R4 1.25u Fn key is missing. However, the R4 1.25u Menu key can be changed to Fn without affecting anything (Fn can fill Menu's role, whereas Menu can't really serve as Fn).
  • R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn, R4 End and a second R4 2.25 Shift are missing, but I suspect this is intentional and you're going to put them in the Additional kit. It's worth mentioning, anyway.
  • Now that I mention it, I think it'd make more sense to put the alternative F keys in the Additional kit instead of those popular 65%/75%/66-key options.
  • The PrtSc, Scroll↲Lock and Pause/Break legends are inconsistent. It should be one of the following: Print, Scroll, Pause; or PrtSc, ScrLk, Pause; or Print↲Screen, Scroll↲Lock, Pause. I'd suggest the simplest, first variant.
  • I'd go a step further and suggest that you replace the stepped Caps↲Lock legend with Caps for a uniform one-line look across the set.
  • R3 1.75u Function and R4 2u Shift would be nice to have in the Additional kit.

Btw, the Hydro colorway is great, I like it.

Don't have too much comment on most of these but regarding (6) the alternative Frow colors is an iconic part of the Hydro set. Please do not move this to a side kit.

Hydro good. R5 good.

Extra F keys instead of ISO? Not good. IMO it's unreasonable and unfair to go for novelty over functionality. Put the extra F keys in a separate kit, it should be <$30 which is well within reason for aesthetic keyboard upgrades nowadays.

I'd usually strongly agree with you but it's a hard ask I think now to rerun a classic set, then abandon one of the core elements of the original set. It's just my opinion but for me the consistent frow was a selling point of the original set.

Currently talking to some professional render people to get some for second IC. When second IC is posted, two weeks from then GB should open. We're planning to have these sets made by summer since its Splash. Thanks for your interest! I hope to share some more details during the holidays.  :)
