Favorite game from 1998?
« on: Mon, 11 July 2016, 19:38:42 »
What is your favorite game from 1998 and why? You can list up to two games.

Mine is Baldur's Gate. And second would be Metal Slug 2  ;D

Off-topic because I don't game, but I LOVED the "science fiction" screen saver that came with Windows 98 and would love to find it again.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

Panzer Dragoon Saga (Sega Saturn).

I liked it because it had a great and unique feel/story to it and didn't drag on for 50+ hours like most RPG's of the time.

A great example of less is more.

Half-Life

I played the **** out of that game, and it left me with a lasting impression. I still remember it fondly to this day, and I'd say it's one of the games I've enjoyed played the most.

This was certainly a good year for gaming. We can get this many worthy nominations and no one has mentioned Starcraft (BW in the same year no less).

This one is good, but it's also the same year that Ocarina of Time came out, so probably that.

Now that's better than the 2006 question. For me, StarCraft [Brood War] is a clear winner. I also have Baldur's Gate on a shelf.

A bunch of other important games came out too: Half Life, Unreal, Thief, Fallout 2, Commandos, Brány Skeldalu, Grim Fandago or Dink Smallwood

Tribes. Multiplayer FPS where you could fly, pilot vehicles, taker passengers, and say really odd taunting phrases. I know Half-Life came out the same year but I just remember having a lot more fun flying around with my friends in Tribes.

Oh, and of course, Brood War.

What an oddly specific year.

IMO the best year for gaming ever. So many fantastic long-time franchises were started, and meaningful squeals that actually changed beloved franchises for the better instead of delivering more of the same.

1998 was right on the precipice of the big leap to 3D, with a lot of developers taking chances with new play styles and mechanics. You also see some of the strong 2D titles releases, as well as the big advent of PC gaming which really took off in '98 with the absolute glut of amazing games released. '98 changed the direction of game development from that year forward.

I don't disagree that the quality in 1998 was the tops, but as far as impact and importance, my vote is for 1994. FF6, Super Metroid, Warcraft, Tekken, System Shock, Marathon*, and others. Sometimes the vision for these games weren't realized until later as skill and tech caught up, but this is where things turned and the beginning of everything up to when the MMO era dominated.

*I might be alone in my love and respect for Marathon. It was Mac only so almost no one played it. Ethernet was still mostly coax, and token ring networks were the norm. We would borrow computers from the school (parents were teachers) and set up an AppleTalk network and play Marathon and Bolo all night... In 94. The game was so far ahead of its time, and it sucks that people only know about it because of halo.

I didn't actually play this game IN the year 1998, but Suikoden II is probably my all time favorite game from 1998.

If I had to choose a game I actually played when it came out... probably a tie between Ocarina of Time and Pokemon Yellow. :)

Quake. I know it came out earlier but 98 was when my brother introduced me to the game (Model M's as well)

Last week I found Hipnotic and Rogue total conversion mods :-*

Waaay harder to answer than the 2006 one...

Final Fantasy Tactics is probably the one I played the most. Half-Life is super obvious, but what's less obvious is the impact that game had on online gaming. Quake was still very popular online, but CS and TFC were massive (though those were 1999).

Xenogears, Ocarina of Time, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Grim Fandango, Fallout 2, Starcraft, MARIO PARTY(!!), Baldur's Gate, Thief... damn, that was a good year.

Can I say Total Annihilation: The Core Contingency? The (best of all time) multiplayer component (sorry SC fanboys) didn't really reach its zenith until the addon pack came out.

It was so hard though I never actually completed it, but it was nonetheless one of my favorites that year.

Looking back I would probably say Ocarina of Time. But does Pokemon Red/Blue count as that's when it came to the US? Because yeah... That's definitely what I played the most in that year. No doubt about it.

Oh, or 1080 Snowboarding. That was fun. 1080 and Pokemon were definitely my most played game in '98.

First one that came to mind (more like first one that I thought was probably around that year) was Ocarina of Time. I always liked Zelda, and that blew my mind. I still play it about once a year. Second would probably be Metal Gear Solid, it was the first stealth game I played, and now that's one of my favorite genres, when done right. And I'm rebelling (OHSHIZ) and saying third would be Star Ocean: Second Story.
