[IC] GMK Solarized Dark - GB Live!
« on: Wed, 15 February 2017, 09:36:57 »
We are proud to share this keyset which is a result of a collaborative project that we have recently been working on.

This keyset is heavily inspired by Ethan Schoonover's Solarized which is popularly used as color schemes for terminals and IDEs, hence the name — Solarized Dark.

We are still finalizing the kits, but here's a few things you can expect from it:

ANSI / ISO
1800 / WKL / HHKB / FC660M / 75% / Ergodox
Scoops and barred homing keys
Accents

What do you think about this set? We'd also like to hear your thoughts!

Beautifully rendered by the thesiscamper.

I am a huge fan of blue-based coloring schemes but you are very close to GMK Nautilus

http://zambumon.github.io/projects/nautilus

I wouldn't recommend running too close to each other ...

I really like the look of the set!! Could see a couple of boards where this would go very nicely.

Something feels just a bit off with the cyan accents though? For me, I'd like more chances to pop some color (more mods, f-row?) or less... bright colors on the arrow, space, esc and enter feels a bit too sparse and slightly out of place. More uniform like Terminal or more chances to cyan it up would feel a little more even to me. Could just be my own ocd, of course.

Interesting, are the Alpha legends light grey?

I would really dig it if all of the legends were the Cyan.

Base1 #93a1a1, yes it is the lighter than the other grey, Base0

I like the direction of the new render. Though maybe the purple is one color extra too much. I'd keep it magenta cyan and yellow, and provide ESC keys of all colors

I have to agree that this set doesn't really benefit from the extra colours. Keep it simple and keep costs down.

I like the colours - they aren't necessary by any means and I'd personally prefer full blue modifiers to match the accents but I figure that might be pretty hard to pull off with GMK's "full set" type of approach rather than kits.

I'd say stick to original intent of Solarized. Lose those cyan keys, replace them with solarized background highlights (base 02 - #073642). if impossible to produce them and be distinct enough than the normal background, then use base 01 #586e75 or even base 00 #657b83.

If we are going to have contrasted modifiers, then use background color from solarized light: base 3 background #fdf6e3. Don't forget to use solarized accent colors for text on modifiers.

As it is, while nice, you can't really call this "Solarized". Oh, if you want to call this "Solarized", don't forget to ask Ethan for permission. Maybe we can even donate him a set if a GB for this can be realized. IIRC he also bought a set of Penumbra a few years ago.

I think the accent keys really help bring the theme of the set together though, the only time I dont see those colors are if i cat a file in the terminal or something

Forgot to say this: text legends instead of icons, and uppercase CODE keys in place of the win keys please. That would be source code-ish.

I feel like while the original design is fine indeed, a similar aesthetic can be achieved with sets like sky dolch. For this set to truly be solarized, the different colored mods will really drive the point across. Also I'm in the camp of "code" instead of windows logo, and I'm a fan of the little contrast between mods/alphas, it's unique.

Sorry, my intention to keep the overall color lowkey is ignoring the "Dark Solarized" theme and straight to the better visualization compared the colored mod and not colored.

Thus, if we wanna stick to the Solarized Dark, better spread the colored text all the way. make the numrow colored, the F, the numpad, all have different color. The struggle will be balancing the neutral text and the colored.

Yeah, there are different design goals and aesthetics between color scheme for keyboards and color scheme for IDE/source code editors. OP wants to adapt the most popular version of the latter to the former. People are divided between those who wants general aesthetics of a keyboard, and those who want to follow the spirit of the original color scheme. Same thing happens to keysets following similar pattern, like Oblivion. But unlike Oblivion, we can't afford to have 2 dozens of child kits. So, I guess it is up to the OP which direction he wants to take. But if we are deviating from the original intent of Solarized, we should use another name, and let others who want to strictly follow Solarized guidelines use them.

IIRC the original Penumbra was also called 'Solarized'. We have come a long way since 4 years ago. Now we can use custom color with Pantone matching. So, I'm kinda hoping this can be the new Solarized set with better colors than Penumbra.

I love the Solarized color scheme. If this set is going to be called Solarized, I would like to see more of those colors represented. As-is, this looks very monochromatic and, as mentioned earlier, close to Nautilus.

We would like to thank everyone for their feedback and thoughts!

Things me, gatix and thesiscamper have agreed on so far:
-Changing the of name of set
-Use text mods instead of icon mods
-Colored legends add on pack

We'll play around more regarding colored legends and also going to try grey(Base1) as legend color for mods instead of cyan.

Oh, if you want to call this "Solarized", don't forget to ask Ethan for permission. Maybe we can even donate him a set if a GB for this can be realized. IIRC he also bought a set of Penumbra a few years ago.

We did email him a month ago with attached renders  :thumb:

The oldest initial renders, and the slightly newer renders which flipped the shade of the mods/alphas (the current renders on the keyrenders interest check page) made the keys look like a very dark aqua color.  These newer renders show it as more of a gray and with seemingly a little less contrast between the two colors.  I still like it a lot, but I was totally in love with the initial renders and I think it lacks the same punch now.

More likely to be an add-on
