The PumpKey ** PROTOTYPE **
« on: Wed, 20 August 2014, 09:49:44 »
I had this idea long ago and finally got some time to develop the pumpkey :)

This is just a prototype carved on wood, ideally the final cap would be cast in resin (maybe even glow in the dark). These are still many small errors, but I'm getting there :)

This is version 0.9 :) Hope you like it, I spent really a lot of time on it.

This cap looks amazing. Really great job!
I also dig the wood material, but i wouldn't mind if this would come in other materials.
Will this cap be very limited?

I don't know if it will ever be produced. I'd like to... but it takes a lot of time (and money actually). Anyway I'll try one more prototype to correct the errors and see how it goes.

I could do them in wood directly... but they would be quite expensive...

Do it, you won't regret it.
I think everyone thinks this would be a great addition to the artisan caps we already have on the market now.
It's just amazing, would be a shame if it won't even be produced...

Anyone have one of those little wooden boxes as a kid? About the size of a walnut, you open it up and there's a jiggly bug or some such creature inside with wriggly legs. Think they were called Bug in a Nut or something really literal.

It is difficult to cast things with holes in them... I expect that you would still have to drill them out with the router.

I did it before, it's not overly complicated. You just have to place some tape in the inside before making the mold. The final product will have a very thin layer of resin at the bottom of the holes that you can easily remove with a sharp scalpel or a needle.

Can your CNC do aluminium? If so, that's what I would use to get a really finely detailed master. Then make molds from that and resin cast 'em! I'd love a solid orange pumpkin for my Cherry Legends Replica or Nostalgia sets!

yes I could do aluminum but for this particular piece I'd need very small bits that are pretty expensive for aluminum (while rather cheap for plastic).

Nice look, but from what the discussion section of mass drop says, it seems that these are 3D printed. Am I correct? I don't know how I feel about that.

Nice one - congratulations on making MassDrop with your design (if that is an appropriate thing to say) :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

You are not the ONLY one here on Geekhack  8) .  There's always been a Matt fan-club here which he deserves since he still carry's the incentive to design and produce miraculous caps that capture everyone's attention and admiration.

Needless to say I'm the biggest card-carrying Matt3o supporter here and am proud of that fact  :thumb: .

I've already ordered the 3d printed one from massdrop. Is there any chance we can get the black one?

I've put the pumpkin key on shapeways here http://www.shapeways.com/model/2834011/pumpkin-keycap-mdash-metal.html

it's available in various colors. Please note that I'm experimenting with a new stem that I'm still beta testing. It should work but if it's too loose simply add a piece of plastic bag, if it's too tight you can file it (it takes time but it's feasible). Either case please let me know how it fits! Thanks

i saw these on Massdrop for a MRSP $25.00 before the drop, will you be selling these for $25? just a little confused as to where they pulled that number out of before the drop since you are the maker.

Well, technically I'm the "designer", not the "maker". These are 3d printed since molding is complex when you have holes on the sides. The metal and resin ones are very high definition, the standard plastic is ok.

Honestly I have no clue where they got $25 MRSP, sculpteo makes volume discount, so maybe if you print just 1 that is  the price. I will be putting these on sales on Shapeways in a bit, but the price won't be that high!

I will!

Thanks for the info, i wasnt complaining about the price, i actually feel its very fair. I was trying to figure out how Massdrop puts an MSRP on things that have never been sold before. Looks great non the less and i remember reading your posts when it was just a wooden proto. Rock on man

sculpteo is in France, so I guess shipping/handling is expensive for a US based company. Maybe that causes an inflated MRSP. Also —between us— all MRSPs on massdrop seem a bit inflated to me :P

Hey Matt3o, so I have both the matte black steel and the enhanced detailed pumpkeys.

The transparent one fits great, but the metal one's stem refuses to go on! Do you have any suggestions on making it fit? I'm not very good with tools.

I'm a bit confused :) one says that is loose the other tight :D probably 3d printing in Metal can vary a lot from batch to batch.

Anyway let's see if I can help you somehow.

The transparent one fits great, but the metal one's stem refuses to go on! Do you have any suggestions on making it fit? I'm not very good with tools.

It's extremely easy to fix!

Take a small flat screw driver and use it as a lever to SLIGHTLY spread the stem. Proceed with caution, but don't be afraid: it's steel, pretty durable.

Ahhh, Matt3o, I got the matte black metal one. It looks great, and I love it. But unfortunately, as you said before, it is a little loose.

If it is loose all you have to do is to place a little piece of plastic bag in the stem. Unfortunately steel is very hard and doesn't bend easily, so it's difficult to find the perfect match for the MX stem.

Please let me know if it works.

To both: if you can't make it work, just let me know, I'll send you money back!

Same here - the Pumpkey is a slightly squarer shape, which I really like :)

Some days or i think 2 weeks ago i got the PumpKey from Shapeways! The color is orange, and the level of detail very nice. I would not have thought that 3D printing is that good - you can't compare it of course with a resin cap, but it is not bad at all. Unfortunately the stem is very, very loose. I think i'll add some glue to the stem to make it smaller. Here are two pictures of this gorgeous cap, but i have no backlight switches here, and you'll only see its evil eyes:

I love the top of the cap, the detail of the pumpkin top and the stipe is great:

I'm actually surprised at the detail too. Hopefully 3d printers for home use will be that good of quality in a few years time.

Can't tell if these are resin or what. Sorry; don't know much about 3D printing.

I hope so, last years drop on Massdrop was a loose sterm drop, I joined the drop last year and got 24 useless pumpkin keycaps.

I joined this drop today on Massdrop and I hope they will fit this time.

Anyone think the "saran wrap" trick will work? i.e. take some plastic wrap and stuff the stem to make it tighter, works on SP caps that need costar stabilizers. I bet it would feel mushy :(

There has been a revamp of the design.

While he doesn't specifically state that it's a fix of the stem, let's hope it addresses that particular issue.

The one I painted seem to turn out pretty nicely. I'm a big fan of the design, Matt3o did a great job on it I reckon.  :)

Its a Cherry sampler I bought on eBay romevi.

CoolerMaster just released a similar one that has a Topre switch on it apparently.

Unfortunately its already sold linkshine, but I can certainly paint another! They're available at Matt3o's Shapeways store: https://www.shapeways.com/product/N3ND2MS4X/pumpkin-keycap-mdash-plastic-resin?li=search-results-1&optionId=40294497

Yikes, nearly commented really stupidly on an old post (I was reading this thread in the wrong direction!).
I never realised that you made a wooden version first. That's some amazing prototyping work, it's great to see the final product come together so well.

Yeah, I'm aware of that, but if I'm not going to be printing it myself, I'd rather get it at a more discounted price.
Plus I'm willing to wait, since Halloween has already passed

Is there no difference at all between what you get from shapeways and MD? Well besides there probably being options for the material on Shapeways. Has the price difference been big?

Yeah, if you bought the Pumpkeys by Matt3o's Creations, then you bought the same ones. You get more options from Shapeways, but if you wanted a plain orange one then joining the Massdrop was slightly cheaper.
