[IC] Hosho SA Keyset
« on: Thu, 21 May 2015, 14:56:43 »
I've been working on this set for a while which is based off of this book cover, and now I'd like to check if anybody is interested in it and whether I should bother sending it to PMK/SP.

Here is a messy render of the set with a bunch of information.

Here is a cleaner render of a 60% layout:

Here is a new better render of a 60% layout:

Here is a render of a 60% layout with a green/blue split:

Here is a render with the keys required for a TKL:

Here are some optional mods:

Feel free to ask any question or make any recommendation as this is not set in stone.

The reason none of your images are loading is because you pasted an incomplete URL between the IMG tags.  The forum software doesn't know how to parse them without an image file extension.

You'll want to edit in the .jpg or .png extension or switch to URL tags.  Your first one should be http://i.imgur.com/kCdlTtv.png?1 not http://imgur.com/kCdlTtv

This is pretty awesome. I'm personally not a huge fan of the Japanese keys. It's not a deal breaker by any means. It would be nice to have a child deal with extra English backspace keys and a few winkey options.

Is this going to be dye-subbed or did you get quotes on molds OP?

Yeah sure I could just do english legends then have all the Japanese legends as a child deal.

Well I'm not sure if it could be dye subbed, I don't know the specifications of what is achievable with dye subbing. I am not sure exactly sure about what style of legends I will be using, as this is pretty much my first set, and I have a lot to learn.

This really looks like an good design, props for that :) the only thing I would change is eliminate the green, but that's personal opinion, maybe it looks better than I'm imagining ;)

I've been wanting to buy an SA set for a while now...

This one is a big enough change that I'd be in 100%.

Ducky Shine 5-MX Blue

The blue legends look better than the green ones on the red keys.
It's a beautiful design.

Nice!
Model M Industrial, SSK, Unicomp 104, Code TKL MX Green, FC660M MX Green + Clear + White + Grey, FC660C Topre 45g, MagicForce 68 USB and Bluetooth, Whitefox, some optical switch 65% Bluetooth split spacebar thing ... wait, I think I need an intervention. Too late, there’s a couple of new Model Fs on the way.
Too much SA is never enough.

I'm loving what you have going on here. Is there any possibility of an ergodox set?

I could offer single blank 2u, 1.5u, and 1u keys, because i think that would have a higher chance to tip than a dedicated ergodox set

edit: Signature Plastics says that from now on, they will offer blank keycaps for every group buy, so you should be good

Maybe you guys could put your heads together and find a way to kinda consolidate the demand for both sets into one?

I agree. I would love to see something a little more thematic for the font.

Also voicing support for additional compatibility sets. This would probably end up on my Leopold FC660M.

Since the plan was for it to be SA(although change is possible), the font would be the font that SP uses with all of their SA sets. Also, I have been working on a wooden poker case (with lots of wood options) on and off for the past  while, but I have been a bit too lazy to make an IC or anything. Also, I don't think that I will bring this set back until either the Otaku Kiibodo set is done on Massdrop (either by failing, or becoming successful) or if enough people express interest.

Fair enough on both counts. I prefer this set to the Otaku Kiibodo set by a pretty wide margin. I've subscribed and will be in the GB if/when it happens.

The font SP uses (Gorton Modified) doesn't have an electronic version. It's a bit like Arial, Helvetica and Engraver's Gothic fonts, with different bits from each. The "G" from Arial, the "Q" from Engraver's Gothic, etc, but some characters are not like any of them ("*" for example).

I believe the Keyboard Layout Editor uses Engraver's Gothic for SA sets. You can see in particular the "&" character doesn't match, among others, and it doesn't allow you to make the text size as large as they actually appear on the real thing. Another flaw in KLE is the colour matching. It uses the correct colour for the base of the keycap, but the keytop is lightened, so the colours in the mockup appear lighter than they really are, but I see you've used actual scans of the colour ring samples, which should give a slightly better representation. I find these to be the most accurate, even though they're still not perfect (and NN is missing): http://deskthority.net/wiki/Signature_Plastics_ABS_colours

If you're planning on using fully sculptured SA profile, you should be aware that SP doesn't have Row 4 Shift moulds yet (we've been pushing them to make them) for the 2.25x and 2.75x Shift keys. All Row 3 SA profile is not affected by this issue, of course.

Anyway, I really like the colourway on this keyset, it reminds me of Penumbra (which is still my all-time favourite set) :)
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

I agree, the two sets are quite different. I particularly like the lotus modifier from the other set, however your design and color choices are superior in every other way.
