[IC] GMK Nuclear Data - Starting July 4
« on: Fri, 05 June 2020, 12:20:21 »
It's about time.

This keyset is based on the original SA Nuclear Data group buy, ran in R3 SA way back in the day. I have attained permission from the original SA GB organizer, samwisekoi to organize this. The original inspiration of the SA set comes from the ND6600 computer.

The green and orange accents are matched to the SP SA colors, the legends are GMK CP. We brought some of the original ND6600 legend symbols to GMK style, as well as some new original ideas. Biip did a killer job with these.

TYVM to Oblotzky for renders, and Biip again for the wonderful novelties and icons.

Collaborations, vendors, more kits and renders, and pricing to come soon.

I really like the Return legended Enter key...
glwic!!!!
The novelties are a must buy too. My only suggestion/question is regarding the "Activate" novelty, I'd be interested to see what that's like with the Enter icon. imo, novelty keys work better when they are the same legend style (icon vs text vs text+icon) as the rest of the set.

Nice! Love it! We needed this to come back. We also needed a sharp green set. Green is under-rated best friend.

1) any chance to see some of those R1 novelties converted to R5 (nice R5 BTW!)?

2) I’d be interested to see a 40s kit. So mark me down as interested in that. I understand you may not see enough traction to kit one out however.

Looking forward to this Hiney!

Isn't that R2 "n" novelty supposed to be mu, it's just upside down? Also, how can you have alpha and gamma with no beta?

Ohhhhhh. *tapping temple* *I'm* the beta.

Edit: just looked at SA Nuclear Data and realized I've had the "n" there upside down this whole time, thinking it was a mu. The blessings and curses of SA R3.

It's in the base kit so that it can also be used as the second B on ergo layouts and doesn't force you to buy the novelties just for it.

MT3 profile would be best for this set.
SA was kinda ok, but I think SP picked too bright green for them.
True Nuclear data should be dark green, like ND6600.

Ahhhh yes. I looked in the base kit, but only looked at the B key thinking it'd replace that.

That's eta (the R2 cap), not nu.

Derp. All my frat days were based in upper case. Eta = H in my mind.

NGL, I originally thought SA Nuclear Data was hideous, but I bought the novelties for an orange and blue build I was doing and put the extras on a switch tester. It's really grown on me. Might have to pick this up.

Ha.  Just did a search for GMK PCB about a week ago.   Nice to see this full green set make a comeback in the form of ND.  I've wanted to buy Nuclear Data for a long time, but I keep talking myself out of it.  Will buy this instead!  Thanks, sir.  Novelties look amazing.

It's not great, but it's not horrifying.

A possible idea for a novelty Enter key:
Чорн☢биль

And maybe a silhoutte of the tower on the ISO and/or Numpad Enter key.

This is all the compatibility I could ever ask for in a base kit. For once I gotta say, good job Hiney.

That being said, though, I'm not sure why there are two R4 1u Fn keys.

This looks really nice. I feel like the word “Activate” doesn’t fit as well though, maybe something like “Detonate” would fit better

Cool set. And R5 is rad! Any chance of R0 as well?

+1 Exactly my thoughts. If this is anything like Boneyard, R0 would increase the price, is that correct?

T0mb3ry about the novelties kit of GMK Boneyard:
Quote
I got two quotes from GMK for this kit. One quote was with R0/R5 support and one without. So it was done to compare the pricing and unfortunately it increases the pricing significantly.

Of course part of the premium was attributed to a number of extra keys in the kit for R0/R5 support, but still.

Very happy about R5 in ND! Good selling point as I see it.

Having R0 does not make it more expensive but having both R0 and R1 f-rows (trying to please everyone will not work!). You have to make a decision here.

That said, regardles if it will be R0 or R1 f-row - GMK Nuclear Data is must have set for me and i will get it anyway. Nuclear Data is a historical and thus geeky/nerdy set for me and i would prefer it having historical full cherry profile rows (0,1,2,3,4,5).

Could just have a R0 keys in a separate kit like TA90 did.

Any set that has a handful of top row novelties will have a bad time when using R0. When you have R11 at the top, you can use the same novelties on the top row on TKL/Fullsize/CP/75% as well as 60%/65%/HHKB etc. Once you change that to R01, you'll either have to duplicate them all, or split them up which makes them less versatile/inaccessible depending on the layout.

That could work but the only concern here is to meet the MOQ of 100 kits... Thus its better to make it the standard/default or don't introduce it at all.

Ok, I understood R0 increased cost out of proportion!

Now that you explain it, obvious ;) One has to see the whole picture, and silly me was just looking at the fullsize sitting in front of me.

Thank you both for enlightening me!

Quick musings ahoy!

- Out of all the novelties, the β keycap in the base kit is the one I dig the most.

- Full English (UK) WITH tertiary legends (nice), but no AltGr keys?

- Ne R3 \| avail?

- Would orange 2.75U and 2.25U space bars be a good addition to the space bar kit?

- I keep trying to think of a good "omega radiation" reference, to justify a "Ne Ω avail?" quip, but I can't come up with anything.

My take on the novelties right now:

Too many cool R1 novelties (wouldn't know where to put all of them on the board).

No cool R5 novelties (don't really consider "Nuclear"/"Data"/"Nuke" novelties. Would suggest moving a couple of the R1 novelties to R5)

Can't find a common application for the R4 3.6 Roentgen/hour novelty. Maybe as a replacement for the 3 on the numpad, or as an Fn key, but too few boards use those keys for it to find common use.

Also, don't know what the R1 arrow keys represent. (Not being a nuclear scientist or reactor operator)

I think the novelties kit is absolutely brilliant, you just might want to add an orange R1 SCRAM key for a more consistent look for those who prefer that (since AZ-5 is Russian and the rest of the set is American / British).

But by all means, please keep the AZ-5!!

EDIT: it could be better not to cram SCRAM on a 1u keycap, I think bottom row novelties would be nice for this as well.

This has morphed from an X-ray analysis system at first to a nuclear reactor control and now to a rocket launch system :D

"Scram" as an alternative legend for "Super"? That's a rather interesting idea...

I think "Scram" and "Shim" would both work really well in the place of "Nuclear" and "Data" personally. Also, I know "Activate" is cannon to the OG set but "Initiate" makes more sense to me.

This set is a not recreation of an old SA set that was run years back. I know a lot of people would be disappointed if they changed the shade of green or changed the color of the alphas

Colors are awesome , novelties are fire .

Maybe include a letter "Ч" (with a radioactive motif or ... a mutation of some sort) in novelties or wherever you deem possible for that instant scare factor ,"Чорнобиль/Chernobyl" .

Definite buy  :) .

It's not great, but it's not horrifying.

A possible idea for a novelty Enter key:
Чорн☢биль

And maybe a silhoutte of the tower on the ISO and/or Numpad Enter key.

Loving these kits. Hiney, you can drop the 1.75u from the spacebars kit since there's no 40s support (and if it's added later, the key should be in the 40s kit since only 40% boards use it).

Have you considered including the orange Enter and Esc in the base kit?

Kinda mad that you included a cadet set, b/c I'll buy it and was trying to save money on keycaps...  but it is what it is.

Dixie usually runs a Rama with their sets. Does this mean there might be a Rama we don't know about yet.....?

Most of the time Geekhack is just hosting Interest Check and Group Buy discussions.  Vendors are chosen to handle purchases from various regions of the world.   Looks like Dixie will be the US vendor for GMK Nuclear Data, as Macmutant mentioned a couple posts up.

All the vendors will be announced closer to GB launch in this IC's OP, and/or in the GB OP which typically opens when the GB starts.

You already got a great response. I'd add two things:
1. You'll be able to order for a few weeks, and
2. There's no limit, so there's no rush.

So if you have further questions, come ask em here or reddit or one of the discords etc. We all started somewhere.

I missed it.  Hinybush posted the vendors for GMK Nuclear Data above:

There will be links when the GB starts.

You know how there are some keycap sets that exist where, as soon as you see them, you know you HAVE to have them?

This is one of those sets for me (GMK Taro was another one, which is why I jumped all in on Taro R2)

I've always been a sucker for anything involving nuclear power plants and the like, and the sublegends on the Cadet Kit are an absolute must-buy for me!

That being said...will there be deskmats for this set? :D

same for me man, but between this and hammerhead, which i fell in love with the second i saw it, it's a hard decision. i can't justify buying both  :(
on the other hand, this is made for SA profile, but the GMK novelties are sweet af.

I'm a let the Carbon warning signs all sit on my F row type of guy so I woulda paid for them anyways, but the designers have been around the block with kitting so I'll trust them.

Me and 49 other nuc data fans would buy the $h1t out of a metal Rama Activate enter though. just sayin.

Why oh why does the font have to be wrong and not centered on the keys? It’s really not the same. I’m just sad because I’ve wanted this set for so long and now it’s being remade, but wrong. Sorry to be negative.

Because it is GMK and not SA. It's standard GMK font and legend placement.

I don't think GMK even does center legend placement unless pad print on blanks lol but that's still slightly off center iirc.

This is exactly how GMK Nuclear Data was to be expected. If you want the same, get SA or see if you can get a set made in reverse dyesubs

yea, this is Nuke Data but in the GMK styling. not a 1:1 clone of the SA set in Cherry profile.

Also..... I feel like Launch is 123.75% more appropriate. No one says activate the nuke. They’d say detonate or launch the nuke. Maybe drop the nuke. Activate the nuke!...... said no one

The Nuclear Data Terminals "was typically used for gamma ray spectroscopy". This isn't about launching nukes.

I wish that Cadet Kit was a full alpha kit so I could just buy it & combine with GMK N9 Ortho Kit instead of having to pay over $200 to outfit a 40%

Would be a fine compromise to just use novelty keycaps in place of the bottom right 3 alpha keys, but there's only 1 R4 novelty :/

I've noticed that R5 makes it a lot easier to hit ctrl with your pinky. Y'know, for those drops shots in games..

I like it. I was skeptical when it was (re)introduced in carbon, but it feels nice.
