[IC] RGB-Y Kit
« on: Fri, 05 October 2012, 21:39:45 »
Hey all,
I wanted to run a group buy for RGB-Y kits as they still seem to be in demand.
I propose 4 different kits:
RGB-Y with black legends for normal boards
RGB-Y with white legends for normal boards
RGB-Y with black legends for Korean and Cherry boards
RGB-Y with white legends for Korean and Cherry boards

The kits above, pending permission, will use the Cherry font and have diamond legends for the "super" key. There will not be any add-ons like the star keys or 1 unit windows keys. I will get the color codes and SVG's from Hashbaz and MBC in the near future. Please post your interest below.
Edit: I would like to make a little bit of money on this group buy for my time. I propose a $1 per set of which I will donate .50¢ of that to the Cherry project, thus I make .50¢ for my time.

I have decided on a few things guys!

I think that we will go with a Star key instead of the Diamond.
Also, I'm adding an Orange key to the table!
ISO "Kits" will be available. You MUST get two shifts with a kit, one black and one white legend. I am not going to split the sets.

$0.50 is totally reasonable IMO.

I think by normal keyboards you mean 1.25x modifiers, like Filco, Leopold, Rosewill, Storm, etc.  And by Cherry and Korean keyboards you mean keyboards with 1.5x modifiers.  Both configurations I suppose will have long right shifts.  You might want to be specific about them.

You don't need the SVGs.  Just tell Melissa you want to use the Cherry replica RGB legends and she'll verify with me.

The red is RA, the green Is VCM, the blue Is BDH, and the yellow is YBP.

For the Korean sets, you'll probably want to include a 1x1 key for keyboards like the Cheat or Phantom.  They  use 1.5x1x1.5x still.  I've always liked the Star way better than the diamond...

LOL. What's going through my head is that I wanted black legends to match my black on white Cherry set. Been typing "black on white" for the past couple of days in PMs so muscle memory or something. Fix'd.

Just to clarify for the price...it's not actually $1 per set right? My understanding that it's $1 on top of each set, which SmallFry is only keeping half, the other half is donated.

I'm still in for sure, but it sounds like people are talking about it like it's $1 for a set

Could I suggest something? Why don't we make a ninth key to replace the Menu/Meta button on the keyboard between right windows and right control? I always find it unusual to have an RGBY kit that covers all the lower modifier keys but that leaves the Menu key on its own and looking really out of place next to the brightly colored keys. Orange comes to mind as a good color as it fits between yellow and red.

Personally right now I'm using two different yellow tones from different RGBY group buys. Would be nice to have the Menu key using something other than a diamond though.

I was thinking that too for my RGB-Y kit! I've been wanting to do that, but now that I seem to be the GB leader, I can! Thanks for the reminder.

^You guys are correct, I meant that I was going to add $1 USD per set, half of which was for my time (and new boards :P) and half for the Cherry Replica project since they're allowing me to run a group buy with their legends.

Yes, this is a great idea! I always thought a shade of purple to match the other hues might work too. Purple and orange are the other two secondary colours missing in terms of RYB.

I'll have to check and see if there are any nice purples/orange. I am slightly biased towards orange, but I'll entertain purple as well. The purple may be too dark when I have the black legends.

pretty much the billards set purple is your only purple color choice

I was thinking of offering a faux Red Cherry Esc like Hashbaz offered in his group buy, pending his permission again.

I have...I just haven't updated the OP. I need to add ISO shifts and the 1.75 option. When the ISO seta are ordered they will come in a pack of two, one black and one white. I won't make them two different sets so that we can keep the prices powers for all the ISO users. :)

I'm not a big poster on Geekhack, so I'm unsure of the rules for group buys, but If I'm eligible at my current post count and stuff I'd be in for 1 normal set, white and black (2 sets in total).

@houlty: Welcome to Geekhack!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Why is this even an interest check still? Everyone knows there will be plenty of sales. Just sell every key of the set individually so those who want iso keys can just add on as many as they want. Same with 1.75x size shift for pures and Cherry 1800, etc. With the appropriate Google ordering form people should be able to make their own sets fairly easily.
Maybe some people want an extra left shift if they are worried about wearing it out from video gaming for example.

Agreed.  I'd be in for 1-2 sets, but would like the options danielucf suggested if possible.  Have full sets available, but also having the ability to add individual keys would likely be popular.

You talked about your parents not wanting you to do this possibly, and sherry ordered a large quantity of RGB kits already but with unknown to us issues concerning 1.75x shift, no yellow or orange, and pretty sure no iso keys either so we may still need a group buy for those parts, and potentially extra shifts if people think they may wear them out gaming.

I would suggest marketing your stuff a little more. Even stuff that is coming up as long as it's something that is going to ship. Since the community can have some of this stuff produced on its own, the sooner we know that you are working on this and it's actually going to ship, like you've placed the order with SP, then we know to just have patience. Maybe I missed it but from what I saw you posted in this thread pretty late letting people know that you had this in production and were going to sell them on your store. I had placed a WTB in the classifieds for white on RGBY double shots. That would have been a perfect time for you to market directly to me via PM letting me know you had some in production with SP and could buy them from you in the near future. I think the WTB threads in the classifieds are what initiated this thread. I know I had suggested in someone else's WTB thread that someone should do exactly what you were trying to do, have them in stock on a regular basis.

I just went to your Subforum to see if you had posted any more information on the Korean Springs you said you were going to put up in your store after you didn't get the response you wanted from advertising them on a thread here. Unfortunately it looks like all the threads have been removed and I still don't see them on your store.

Don't take this as anything other than constructive feedback as that is what it is meant as.

That's fine if you want to proceed with this.  I don't mind.  I can't stop you guys from doing it.

To be honest, I don't mind at all.  I know people rather purchase from a group buy because it's cheaper.  I'm fine with everything.  I know people will still come to me for some RGB kits.

Let's make it an rgbyo set and maybe use slightly different shades of the colors? Include solo keys, 1.75 shift, and iso. How does all that sound?

Brilliant.

Have you had a quote for these yet?  Just wondering if there's an idea of cost.

I have bad news guys. I think my parents shot down my group buy aspirations. I'm sorry guys, but somebody else will have to run this.

EDIT: Parents are debating it.
Any word? Are they cool with you managing a large order consisting of thousands of dollars of other peoples money if this ends up being your first group buy? I'm curious how you are trying to sell this to them, and if you are trying to conceal any details like I probably would have from my parents when I was in high school. No way I would let my high school self run a group buy :p college, financial responsibility, and a real job works wonders for credibility and reliability.

In for at least 7x 1.25 set and 7x 1.5 set, both with white legends. Will also pick up some with black legends, at least 5 of each.
