Starting from the dot on top of the chip, your pin 1 is right next to the dot, and increments going down the same side to #14, then up the other side to #28 on the opposite side of the dot. So your ground pin is pin #1, and the voltage pin is #11, or 4th from the bottom on the side of the dot. Common (black) multimeter lead goes to ground pin, red (volts) goes to voltage pin.
Edit: It's also rather hard to kill anything when measuring volts.
