After months of hesitance, I finally decided to make my initial dive into getting some functioning mechanical watches.  I'll probably have my local horologist clean and lube them up and get them in top running condition, or at least as good as watches of their age can run.

I got this 1940's Era Hamilton (I think) with a 987s movement off Craigslist:

I 82432-082436-1

Then this one, that my dad gave it to me last night when I brought home the Hamilton.  It's a family heirloom, may have been my great grandfather's or even great-great grandfather's.  The serial number dates it back to 1896 or 1897.  I really love the design on the movement.

Is that a brass cased watch with a chrome plated finish? You going to leave the exterior as is?

The pocket watch is great.

Haven't posted a watch in awhile, so I guess I'll do my bloody fang monster:

Interesting tatts btw - we have a thread for those too!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Here are some quick thoughts after a few days:

This watch has some serious heft and seems to be built like a tank. So far I really like it and have no regrets. As an added bonus, I called them with a question and they were very helpful and pleasant to talk to.
Here's the one that I am thinking about getting as birthday present to myself (only need to see if amazon will take clacks as payments  :p  :)) ) http://www.amazon.com/REACTOR-52011-Gamma-Titanium-Bracelet/dp/B0039R5C5E

I really liked binary watches for a period and honestly i still do but i HATE having to push the button to check the damn time, after a little while i could read the time just as quickly as a regular watch but it was pushing the damn button that got me in the end.

01theone Split Screen

This one was kinda neat too, 60 led watch, German made.

New watch time: Orient Flight.
Mini review:
Good:
Classic B-Uhr Type B dial (ish, could do without the automatic and water resist labeling or the date).
MMMM all black. good contrast with the white markings
sunburst dial in the hour region, and concentric rings for the minute/second area
white lume that glows bright enough. The hands are as bright as my brightest divers but the lume on the markers doesn't compare at all.
not horrible leather for a lower priced watch

Meh:
A bit small at 42mm diameter. Wish it was a 44mm.
No lume on second hand
Typical clunky winding sound of orient movement.

Eh:
screw down crown. No handwinding on the 487 caliber so I guess it doesn't matter that much.
Flat hardlex crystal. I'll put in a thick sapphire if I do scratch it.
No drilled through lugs. Every watch should have it.
Piqued my interest enough that I'll probably get something more authentic. Laco and Steinhart are on the top of my list.

Think that you could open up the back of the case and take a look at the movement inside?  For most vintage American watches, there are online databases that can give more information about the model and production date, based on the serial number.

I was going to post a pic of the back but it has a mirror shine so can't see what is written. Maybe I could take the back off but I have never done so and don't want to damage it any further than it already is.

Is it my eyes or does the minute and hour hands have some rust on it? If it is rusted, I would not run the watch again until you get it looked at by a watchmaker and make sure the movement hasn't rusted as well.
It looks like an acrylic crystal, so you can try some headlight buffing compound on it to make it clearer, but i would not try to take out all the scratches since it does have quite a bit of character. You'll probably want some new bracelet/strap that is better fitted to the lugs. Those look 2mm too small.

Be careful with the strap/bracelet: these kind of straps were very common decades ago but they tend to create chemical reaction (?) with the watch itself.  First thing I'd do would be to remove the strap and see if it's all green everywhere (bad) or not: I've had the issue with two watches coming from my uncle.

In case anyone is interested, I dropped this off at the watchmaker and they will give it the full treatment, including the addition of a glass crystal.  I'll take some pictures when it's done.

I'll be posting a few more watches over the coming week(s? Depending on how lazy I feel).

Today it'll be one of my few dressier pieces:
Seiko SRN035
See pix below.
It is another Kinetic, and it does require a bit of TLC to keep the battery in good shape. I would have preferred a basic quartz or solar movement, but alas I've only seen this case on this watch (including different dial colors). It has a rounded bezel on a rounded case. Both are fully polished. There are few other watches with roman numerals and retrograde day, but nothing is quite stylish as this. It just looks great with its silver hands on the black sunburst dial. The fake alligator look calf leather strap is decent enough. The watch has an exhibition case back, which is kind of odd since the movement is neither decorated nor anything special to look at.

It is a 40mm watch. This feels tiny on the wrist, but it is reasonably large for a dress piece. It really only come out of the drawer to get charged. As little as I wear it, it is nice to have in the collection.

PS, this watch has no lume. The lumaholic in me is screaming but the watch is almost perfect as it is. Lume will probably kill the look.

Older picture showing colors of the lume.
91364-0

Green is brightest initially bar none. But it has this cream/snot color in daylight.
orange lume that glows orange is kinda weak, but it is UV reactive.
Blue lume looks whitest in daylight.
The G-Shock has orange looking lume that glows yellow. Very interesting.

There are some lume that looks orange that glows green.

Bonus lume dial picture. NY0040.

PS, I really should start cleaning my watches before I take pictures ;o

My Visodate has had to be sent back to Switzerland to get fixed :( It was running like 3 minutes fast a day. Can't wait to get it back.

I've got a nice Pulsar SS from my brother though which has really grown on me. The movement inside is quite heavy, but I like it.

Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Interesting.  I saw a watch thread on bimmerpost.com, and it was a bunch of dolchbags showing off.  This thread is so much more normal.  Of course that thread was getting trolled.

/r/watches is just people fawning over Rolexes and Hamiltons mainly, and where I like Hamilton watches, I can't stand 99% of Rolex watches. I don't know why, I just really dislike them.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I think they are a bit flashy.

What is up with that little window? Along with the small face, and that bracelet with so many links, I just think they look cheap. It's only the name and that crown that make them flashy.

Are those lined with Tritium?

Most decent lume used now is strontium aluminate based (Lumibrite, Super Luminova, etc). They glow brighter than tritium for the first 30 minutes or so after light exposure. They also do not degrade with age unlike tritium. If I really need high visibility, I'll go for something electronic (LED or EL).

I generally agree that most Rolex are forgettable. I do like the new Submariner with the ceramic bezel (no date of course), and the Deepsea Sea Dweller. I really can't see myself spending that much for a tool watch. Watch collecting is about having fun. People will stare at you with a blank face if you tell them about Pateks, Audemars Piquets, etc. The nice thing about Rolex is that if you bought one, they do keep the value pretty good on the 2nd hand market thanks to the strong Rolex marketing. Don't be put off by Rolex because of the pricks that wear them. They're good watches. (Whether or I think they're worth the money is another issue all together ;))

Edit: Bonus picture. Put my baby tuna on Z22 strap. I only wore that thing 2x. May be the strap will help make it into my rotation more often. Looks much better on straps IMO.

Tbh, I think I would just prefer a Patek.

Haha, Pateks are a bit too gentlemanly for me.

Here are my aviator looking field watches with the Orient Flight.
These watches do look great when fresh. I generally don't like beadblasted finish as it is something I can't refinish myself. Then again, the Seiko + Timex = <100 bucks.
There are some bad things I can say about the Timex Military Field, but it is really not bad for the price (~40 bucks). I'll just mention how much I hate the Timex's loud ticking.
Seiko is 37mm and looks funny when I have it on. I did take it diving one time. Oh no you need a diving watch. Not.

Any RGM fans here?  Basically, the only watchmaker in America making their own movements.  I admire their classic styling, rather than trying to keep up with the latest fashions.  I've read some grumblings that they are not as American-made as they claim to be, but at least they are attempting to do it, rather than grumble about it.

The specifications of RGM says RGM/ETA movement. So it is likely it is just a modified ETA movement done in house. Who built the base ebache only have some effect on the final assembled movement. It is up to their marketing to call it an American movement. It is swiss tradition to use ebauches. In house movement movement (;)) is a recent marketing fad.

It reminds me of car manufacturers and coachbuilders.

I was under the impression that these offerings were not ebauches, with design and manufacturing done in the USA:

Ah, I see the American made movements now. That Tourbillon is made of win. http://rgmwatches.com/collections/American%20Made/Pennsylvania_Tourbillon.php It has a very artisan feel. I guess now that I read more about them, the more I like them as a company (their watches don't speak to me). Seems like they're passionate about watches and will service several high end brands. Can build custom watches with them too. Like!

My Precisionist.

I'll edit and add text later.

Edit:

So, I got another chrono. I wanted another chrono and I been swayed by the smooth gliding precisionist movement. Well here it is. I haven't seen any mechanical chronos I like, but I'll add one eventually.

Right off the bat, this watch is huge. 18mm thick, and 62mm from the tip of the endlink to endlink. It is weighing down the wrist at 260g. I knew it would be big from the specs, but DAMN is it big on the wrist. I'll spare the jokes. It is comical enough on the wrist.

Mini review:
Good:
- Tough industrial looking design
- Great silver, blue, carbon, yellow color mix.
- carbon fiber dial
- fish scale finished ring on the other edge of the dial
- Interesting hour and minute hands
- lovely twisted fluting on the crown.
- chunky bracelet that balances well, and has diver's extension hidden in the clasp
- Lovely tactile feeling on the chrono pushers, though a bit on the heavy side.
- pretty smooooooooth second hand. You can still see the steps when looking closely enough, since it is only 16hz.
- Biggest pins in a pin and collar bracelet I've seen yet.
- Takes common CR2016 battery
- Your arm doubles as a flail in an emergency

Meh:
- No sapphire. Doubtful if there will ever be compatible aftermarket option either.
- comically big. 10% reduction in all measurements would be perfect.
- Wish the second hand would reset faster in chrono mode
- Lume, so weak that it may as well not have it.
- the allen screws on the top is over the top.
- Clasp feels chinzy.

Eh:
- Screw down crown. But not screw down pushers?......
- While rated for 300m, I highly doubt I want this boat anchor on my arm when I go diving.
- wish the hour subdial can display 2nd time zone in watch mode.
- No more tuning fork logo :( I guess it is only on Accutron II now.
- The Precisionist logo on the second hands looks like bawls.

I have very few watches left on my to-buy list, and a Bulova Accutron II Snorkel is one of them. Torn between PVD and the stainless and blue model. The Precisionist does make a good impression, but if the build quality is similar I do not think I want to pay 400 for the Snorkel. May be around 300 or so.
I'll time it for awhile. I'll see if the B5 build date (2015) holds better accuracy than before. Older ones doesn't come close to holding the +/-10seconds a year claim. Then again, I don't really care that much if it is not. I set my quartz watches every time there is a short month anyways.
