Fountain pen with GOOD ink!
Hi Everyone,That link isn't working for me.
I was pointed to this thread, so I thought I would post my soon to be favorite pen/pencil.
This is a gratuitous plug for something we got going at Kickstarter. Hopefully this is not an inappropriate post, but I'd like to get out the word about our little project that we turned on a few days ago.
Here's da link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...encil-and-pens
Thanks for looking!

That link isn't working for me.
Behold my blogspam about this very subject! (http://www.danielbeaver.net/journal/2011/5/29/pencil-and-pen-reviews.html)
I use Tul pencils (http://davesmechanicalpencils.blogspot.com/2009/05/tul-mechanical-pencil-review.html) and Parker Jotter ballpoint pens (http://www.cultpens.com/acatalog/Parker-Jotter-Ballpoints.html#a10084).
I have a Zebra Tect 2way with .3 mm lead. Love how small I can write with this too. Even used it to color in on my PBT engraved caps because I didn't like how close they were to blanks. linky for color (http://www.jetpens.com/Zebra-Tect-2way-1000-Drafting-Pencil-0.5-mm-Orange-Body/pd/1603)
As with any hobby, explaning why a certain item costs that much is always fun. With my expensive Realforce keyboard, people usually ask me , how much was that? I think this is usually a question because a Realforce keyboard , to the average person, may remind them of a keyboard they got for free with their pc in the 90s therefore they think it should be like a $20 keyboard. I mention the price, they think I ma crazy, then the second they try typing on it they seem to get hypnotized and while in a weird trance they state that they love the way the keys feel. Question answered.
Expensive keyboards, a €300+ PC-case, pens, down sleeping bags (yes it's almost nothing and yes it is expensive) or even bikes and cameras.
Even my mom, who is used to my tastes in outdoor gear by now, got scared when I told her how much a certain backpack (http://www.arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?EN/Mens/Bora-80) would cost were it not on sale.
The only way to show them why it is so expensive is to let people use it.
I'm currently sporting a PHX pen http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/klinkokids/phx-pen with some Uniball Signo DX (UM-151) and Pilot Hi-Tec C .4 and .5mm refills (in black and red) - I prefer .4/.38mm.I recently got a bunch of pens to test drive so that I can find some favorites. A mix of 0.38, 0.4, and 0.5 sizes, and different brands and types: Hi-Tec-C; Signo DX; Zebra Stick; Pentel Slicci; etc. I really like the Hi-Tec-C pens.
HOWEVER, if you're looking for an awesome pen for refills, the same guys' newest pen is amazing and I'll have to order one (or several) some day. Their solid titanium pen which is a first of its kind in that it accepts TONS of different types of refills, rather than being based on just one or a couple of refill types. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/klinkokids/solid-titanium-pen-stylus?ref=users
Aaaah the 800. Thought about getting one of those but then i had horrible dreams about colleagues borrowing my pen and then have them press down on the tip like crazy to make the lead come out and break it in the process.... Dunno how likely this is but i went with my good ol 600 just in case cuz thats more solid than a rock.
Do you notice any play in the tip when using it? I heard that could be a problem with these models....
Dixon Ticonderoga's are my favorite pencils. The older ones like this are my favorite:Show Image(http://img3.etsystatic.com/000/0/5738587/il_fullxfull.269131983.jpg)
I used to have one like this that was a #4 pencil. It was "Ex-Hard".

#4 extra hard! What do you use it for? A nail set?
I'm a Sailor fountain pen ****. I use a Sapporo in fine nib and a Pro Gear with a medium nib. I have a variety of ink colors, but I prefer black, dark blues, dark greens. Can you recommend me a green ink? I want to start using my pens again, and I'm out of green currently Preferably I can also get a converter for my Lamy safari (And hopefully, I'll be able to go home to Kentucky soon, where my good pens are)
I just got some Sharpie pens that are amazing. Heavy defined ink lines with no bleeding or smearing. I didn't even know Sharpie made pens.

Sharpie has a gigantic product line. Can you provide a link to said pens product page so I can try 'em out?
Thanks!
My favorite pencil is a kuru toga pencil! The tip is always sharp evenly.

Rotring 600/800
I haven't tried the 800, but the 600 is smooth indeed. However, the price point for a single drafting pencil was no bueno.
And awesome titanium pen you got there!
I like my lamy safari:)
used to use that but th only ink i could stand to write with was the gel cartridgesShow Image(http://www.massardi.com/files/acatalog1/product/Parker_JOTTER.jpg)

I bought the Ti2 because it looked well designed and the black edition looked like it would go well with my 800. here is a pic that much closer to its true color:

Nobody else carries a Pentel Graph 1000 for a daily mech pencil? You guys are missing out! (Well at least you guys who don't have Rotrings lol)

Not sure if this brand will be easy to find, but I use stainless steel 12" ruler made by "Harima". Picked it up in Japan sometime ago. It also doubles as a self-defense weapon :pNobody else carries a Pentel Graph 1000 for a daily mech pencil? You guys are missing out! (Well at least you guys who don't have Rotrings lol)
Yea I pretty use that every day!that zebra 701 only lasted a week for me :(
What happened to it? I recently had to use mine to release a jammed parking break in a car and it still works like a champ.
However with the MontBlanc mod, there is a bit of play with it.
gotta say looks sick and very technical with all the japanese writing on the pens ;)Show Image(http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/5593/photodoe.jpg)
My arsenal.
^ I totally agree with the Pentel EnerGel pens. They are my current favorites for all-around use.my gues from the names is the mechanism that advances the lead though I may be wrong it could be like the Sony MDR-V6 thing
Can anyone tell me what is the difference between the Pentel Graphgear 1000 drafting pencil versus the Pentel Graph 1000 drafting pencil? They both look awesome.
cartridge exploded inside the pen. made the click mechanism get stuck and it was a huge pain to fix it :(
gotta say looks sick and very technical with all the japanese writing on the pens ;)Thank you! Here's the list if you are interested, straight from my JetPens receipt.
Can anyone tell me what is the difference between the Pentel Graphgear 1000 drafting pencil versus the Pentel Graph 1000 drafting pencil? They both look awesome. The Graphgear has a retractable lead pipe unlike the Graph 1000, making it more pocket friendly. However, I've had the Graph 1000 for about 4.5 years now and the pipe has never bent, although I handle it just like any other pencil. My friend has a Graphgear and I feel as though the extra mechanism and spring affect the weight balancing of the pencil.
did they take it away from you when they discontinued it o.O?
Apparently. heh.well it broke.... so i just stoped all i remember is that it was Blue :D
When it comes to pens I like to use the Sharpie Pens with the fine point.for me they die WAY too quick
Only problem is my girlfriend always takes them. If I go upstairs to her desk in her pen cup I always see a ton of my pens!
Just got one of these in the mail today from Jetpens. I think I've found the perfect mechanical pencil. ;Dthats a pencil?

for free? sure, why notlol im not that giving, sorry
can't blame me for trying :Pgo for a rotring 600 instead ;P
i actually have one in my cart on jetpens, with a couple other stuff i get free shipping!
sold out ; ;damn looks like they need a shipment of rotring products
This thread has made me itch for some new pens and pencils, anyone here know a decent European online store for them? JetPens seems nice, but the free shipping deal is US only and international shipping is quite pricey.
anyone interested in a Staedtler 625 25-05? I have one that I got as a gift that never saw much use because of my Rotring 800

Also the limited editions are a special colour and they usually only get one bottle of ink per limited edition pen so finding them can be pretty hard.

It has an amazing list of compatible refills, but I will most likely be using the Pilot Hi-Tec-C Cavalier with it.

Yes really, enough to find out a bottle of that ink is on eBay and about 6 hours away from me.
Oh and that a beautiful John Lennon fountain pen is $1k!
It has a refillable reservoir but even the ink inside the reservoir is dried up

Can you get the piston working? I would try working through some warm water, it might take ages and I am by no means an expert!

be aware that these ship from china.
i had no idea they did and i had to wait a week for it to come lol.
For ‘important’ stuff, I use a Pilot M-90, fine nib, with black Sailor Kiwa-Guro ink.I'm a huge fan of the tombow mono. Bought two dozen awhile ago and haven't found any pencil that writes as well as they do
For every day notes, I use a Caran d’ Ache 849 ballpoint, or a Papermate Mirado Classic in HB (I have a ridiculous stockpile of US-made ones).
When I’m feeling fancy, I’ll use a Tombow Mono 100, or a Craft Design Technology Item 17 (both HB).
I'm a huge fan of the tombow mono. Bought two dozen awhile ago and haven't found any pencil that writes as well as they doThey’re probably my single favourite pencil. The Mitsubishi Hi-Uni is also excellent, and it’s hard to say why I prefer the Tombow. The Pentel Black Polymer and Craft Design Technology are both fantastic as well, and very unique — they have a smoothness I don’t think I’ve encountered in any other woodcased pencil.
I'm a cheap person, I use Precise V5 pens, as they're cheap and people always steal\borrow your pens\pencils and never return them.
Best wooden pencil in the world is the Dixon Classmate; I hate the Ticonderoga. Love Micron pens and Pigma Sensei Sakura markers.
Sharpies are always badass as well, and I also like drafting pencils, although I'm not great with them (leadholders, not just standard mechanical pencils). I myself have 2 KOH-I-NOOR's, a 6mm and a 2mm.

What's wrong with Ticonderogas?
Anyone wanna recommend a 0.3mm drafting pencil that's <$20?
I was looking at the GraphGear 1000 and Uni-Bal Shift ones, but I already have 0.5mm versions of those and want to try different ones.
KOH-I-NOOR's and Staedtlers are nice. Really, as long as it feels nice in your hand and holds the lead securely, it's all good. I don't like that the KOH-i-NOORs are made of all plastic now but they still do the job nicely, and they're a classic.

I like the Uni-Ball 207, but the ones I've been using lately have been super inconsistent and will stop writing at random when there's clearly still ink in the pen, which is what prompted me to get the Zebra F701.

Yeah they're definitely not the best, but I'll reach for them over the majority of available pens around me. Still searching for my perfect pen.

Rotring 600 (pics later), old style (Rotring 600 | 0,5 written on side)
This thing feels great in the hand. It is a bit smaller than I was expecting, but not absurdly small.

I'm guessing the hardness ring you're talking about is to keep track of what lead you're using, handy if you have several of them with different leads in.

+1.
Seriously, TP. This is for Pens and Pencils, not keyboards. A keyboard is an interface tool, and a pen or a pencil is a writing utensil for paper. Last I checked, you can't write on paper with a keyboard.

Does anyone know where I can get the simple "0.5" side-print, as opposed to "rotring 600 / 0,5 mm", as posted earlier in this thread? I want a backup plan if this one eventually gives in.

I love my Rotring 600, though I have an original, not the new-fangeled stuff ;D
I also love my Sailor High Ace-Neo, and Zebra Drafix mechanical pencil.
It's funny, it seems that my two of my three favorite hobbies have found their way onto one forum. Maybe, eventually there will be a Linux/Pen/Keyboard forum :thumb:

The only thing with almost every ballpoint I have tried is that you have to scribble to get them to start writing.
And drying up half way through the first word - so annoying!

I firmly believe the ball-point is technologically, the superior writing device..
It can write at far greater angles... it's much more ergonomic and accommodating in that sense..
Though, of course that still leaves the possibility that people mis-use this and end up finger-writing and pressing too hard causing RSI.

I like the ****ty ballpoint bic pens. The black one. I hate the blue pens
The only thing with almost every ballpoint I have tried is that you have to scribble to get them to start writing.
And drying up half way through the first word - so annoying!

That sounds dangerous. Plus, I have had too many pens leak all over the place.
The Uniball jet stream has been my go to for a while. I used to live and die off the Pilot G-2.
The Uniball jet stream has been my go to for a while. I used to live and die off the Pilot G-2.
i honestly don't know what the rage was about with the G2, the ink is fine, but the tip wasn't very good and didn't write at as many angles as ball-points and some other Gellies.

I use the G2 pretty much exclusively (0.38 and 05mm), and it writes at most any angle just fine, but if it's dropped one too many times, it tends to stop writing or dry very quickly.

You guys seem ONLY transfixed with Black ink onto white backgrounds, what about darker backgrounds?
You still need to mark and write onto dark/blackish areas sometimes covered with oil/grease and even remnants of kangaroos, hence you need a pen that can write all over that type of surface + it remains permanent even when it sits in the sun all day.
We currently ONLY buy packs of Pentel Permanent White - Fine Point and Sharpie Oil White Paint Marker - bold.
Best 2 writing instruments we have ever come across when it comes to itemizing all manner of product, that arrives and leaves our workshops.

... with a MX-compatible stem?
I used my rotring for a while because it was expensive..
Over time, I realized that drafting pencils are terrible for actual "writing"
In drafting you make long lines. The greater weight is good here because it prevents the lead from kicking up and breaking the line, and it also allows you to not* press as hard against the paper..
However, handwriting situations are very different..
____Short strokes, and frequent directional changes using the finger/ wrist
Here, when using a heavy writing tool, the weight works against you as you have to write against the greater momentum of the pen during directional changes..
this in contrast to drafting situations where you're making one long steady line in a single direction.
I can feel my fingers/hand tiring quite quickly when using a heavy pen/pencil for writing..
This is especially true for PENCILS, because much greater pressure is required to put lead onto paper..
This is not the same as a heavy fountain pen, which is glided against' the paper, and requires almost no pressure because of the wet ink..
Conclusion.. Don't use drafting pencils for writing, just cuz it looks cool and cost more..
My qualification for saying all this.. I have good handwriting, decent script. That is to say.. I've written for the sake of writing... ALOT.

Well, you're entitled to your own opinion, but I really enjoy my Rotring for writing. The weight makes my 2B write that much smoother, and I generally enjoy things with more heft, writing utensils included. Again, it's your opinion. I just happen to personally disagree due to my tastes.
Conclusion: Try out different pencils and decide which one is for you. Just like keyswitches. You may find that you like heavy drafting pencils for writing, and that's perfectly fine. If you like light pencils, then sure. go ahead and use them. Just find a solid pencil to use.

The weight is not prohibitive..
If you don't write very much, or only write in short duration.. the weight and extra strain makes little difference..
My take centers on continuous medium/ long duration writing. 10 minutes or more.
I don't use pencil for note taking, because of how much pressure is required to use one..
My use for pencils is generally only calligraphy.

I understand your angle, and my point still stands. It's all personal preference. I don't like how you tell people what you perceive as right/wrong as actually right and wrong.
as for the note taking, have you tried a softer lead, like 2B? It really reduces the pressure required to write with quite a bit. I prefer it greatly over HB.

For note taking, 2b "would be" smoother and lighter-touch, but it's never going to reduce the pressure down to say.. ball point pen/gel pen.. LOL.. and 2b will smudge even on the best paper if you glide your hands over it..
While the same smudging can happen with ball point/gel, they are much more resilient when dry.. 2b will ALWAYS smudge if you touch it, or when the pages rub together.
I'm not TELLING you what to do.. I'm just sharing my experience and "ANALYSIS" on the pros/cons of writing utensils.

Completely serious there. Writing with 2B in a drafting pencil is silky-smooth. Most Ballpoints I've tried are usually at least a little scratchy.
my pen habits have gotten me ingrained to just cross out anything in pencil anyways, haha.

Interesting. I've used pencils of various hardness and boldness for art, which I'm not particularly good at, and I remembered that I liked F grade pencils quite a lot.
It would be very nice to try a draft pencil, though. :D
It's just unfortunate that I've pretty much gotten used to writing with thin ballpoint pens (0.38 or 0.50 mm), and I feel that they look very clean and are, of course, much darker. There does remain something to be said about correcting errors, but my pen habits have gotten me ingrained to just cross out anything in pencil anyways, haha.

I do the same, reaching for the eraser takes too much time and interrupts my train of thought :))

I've found that 2B in a Rotring 600 is extremely smooth. I have a plastic clone of it, and it's pretty smooth also, but that pencil is still at least 1.5x heavier than a typical cheapo mechanical pencil. It's definitely a different sensation to a pen, but it's mostly because of the heft of the pencil.my pen habits have gotten me ingrained to just cross out anything in pencil anyways, haha.

Simple: Finish your thought, then edit later.

If I had to chose one, it would have to be the Rotring 600 in 0.5 lead. I've tried the 800, and the retractable tip is nice in its own right but its added weight and complication lead to the entire pencil feeling less balanced and cohesive. The 600 on the other hand, is very nearly perfect. Nice to hold, nice and weighted, and has a certain beauty in its simplicity. The erasers are quite chunky, a huge upgrade from the tiny ones in Staedtler's 925-05. The grip is not overly aggressive, but instead to a degree both comfortable and suitably grippy. I've tried a lot of drafting pencil over the years, and this is the one I was most enamored by. It is quite ironic, however, because I have never used this pencil for any kind of drafting. I use it almost exclusively for writing essays, notes, and stories here and there. It performs admirably, and not to mention looks awesome doing it. I do however lack a nice ballpoint or roller ball pen in my set up. Any recommendations?

I love keyboards as much as the next guy, but a nice notebook and a pencil is unmatched for writing purposes. I use small muji notebooks so often, a few rows of my bookshelf are chock full of them. Whether it be a writing prompt or just a creative idea for a piece of writing I had, I love to just sit and hash it out. There is something oddly personal about laying that graphite down on the paper by hand that I don't feel when I'm hammering something out on my keyboard. Call me old fashioned, but I find being at my desk with just a pencil and some paper as the best environment for me to really get my creative juices flowing. In terms of essays, I always have my first draft on paper before I type it up to hand in.If I had to chose one, it would have to be the Rotring 600 in 0.5 lead. You might think a GHer would rather type. I don't know if I'm really representative, but I prefer handwriting for journal entries at least. Give future readers something interesting to see in the handwriting, because my daily struggles sure as hell aren't fascinating. It seems like handwriting gives me a better emotional connection and less opportunity for dishonest editing on the fly. I've been working on fiction in handwriting too, and it seems to work out nicely, but I'm going to try drafting on a keyboard and see how it affects the outcome. There's a lot of speculation about "handwriting vs. typing" to be found online if you search for it. Some interesting reading, though who knows what basis it has in fact.I feel very similarly, and I tried to portray the way you feel in my earlier post. You bring up a great point about how handwriting factors in which I completely forgot. Sure when you type there are fonts and such, but they are never truly your own. When you write by hand, you are representing yourself in the way you print each and every letter. My older sister is in medicine, and her handwriting reflects that if you know what I mean. :D All about efficiency, quickness, and shorthand. I, on the other hand, write with leisure and in doing so print in very miniscule and accurate lettering and write cursive with decent skill. It does all come down to preference in the end.
Sure. I'm reading "Handwriting in America" and it's pretty neat to see how perception of handwriting has changed -- from a prescribed hand indicative of place and function in society, to a medium where deviation was valued (at least by romantics) and general character could be determined from some gestalt theory of handwriting analysis, to the graphology of details thought to describe a person in depth, which I understand is considered pseudoscientific now. I'm only halfway through the book, so where it goes from there I don't know, but just personally and for fun, I like to think something of the person or their mood comes through in handwriting, though not necessarily in any quantifiable way. Just another aspect that's nice to see.Very true, :D. The old adage "practice makes perfect" sums up nice handwriting very well.
Besides, I'll never keep the skill up if I don't find places to use it. :P

Ah, should have clarified the images aren't my own. I own two of the 0.7mm pencils, a ballpoint and an all black rollerball, some of the other varieties can be harder to find. Just posted that image from maganpolitik on flickr I had saved. Always was jealous of their collection while searching for them a few years ago :p .
And that invalidates my statement how? Seriously, I want one of those pens.
I just got a silver Rotring 600 0.7mm and I'm very happy with it. I'd like a black 600 0.5mm to go with it. I use it daily at work :D
get a twsbi with a fine nib, you'll love it!
I like the TWSBI more, I wasn't a fan of the grip style that safari has. I also found the TWSBI to write smoother compared to the scratchy feel the safari had. But it was fine vs medium so not sure how much that plays into it.
What size nib did you get? The grip style and the scratchiness are the reasons why I didn't like it. But i do love my twsbi mini. sadly i dont write enough to use it every day :(
ah, okay, so it isnt just the medium i got. good to know, i was going to give them another try. but now i'll pass.
No idea tbh, I'm a noob when it comes to fountain pens. I believe it's german vs asian (not sure which part) made nibs, but i forgot what's what.

Do you know if it's an issue with all the Lamy pens, or just the cheaper end stuff? Do they all use the same nibs?

I've got about 6-8 safari's - all Medium nibs.
I would guess that the scratchyness is to do with the Fine nib being narrower than a Med (like scratching paper with a pin)
Then again comparing the medium to my GVFC fountain, it essentially has the same 'sound' if that makes any sense.

afaik the 800 is just a 600 with a retractable tip.
As for fountain pens; nice as in nice and expensive, or nice as in value for money ones?
I really like my Lamy pen, the good thing about Lamy is that they all use the same type of nib with the exception of the 2000.
The Vista is a nice and cheap demonstrator, and the AL-Star is amazing looking if demonstrators(or at least cheap ones) aren't your thing.
TWSBI pens are also nice pens for a decent price from what I've heard.

Lamy Safari was the first one I bought. tjcaustin seems very fond of his Pilot Metropolitan (http://www.gouletpens.com/Pilot_Metropolitan_Fountain_Pens_s/1336.htm). Demik loves the Twibsi.

I'm not looking for something too expensive, but it can be up to like maybe $50 if it looks nice. I know that amount probably won't go very far, but looking for range of fountain pens that are cheaper and up to that price. Also, looking for recommendations on nice fountain pens.

Lamy Safari was the first one I bought. tjcaustin seems very fond of his Pilot Metropolitan (http://www.gouletpens.com/Pilot_Metropolitan_Fountain_Pens_s/1336.htm). Demik loves the Twibsi.
Really enjoying my Rotring 600 0.5mm mechanical pencil :)
Anyone have the Rotring 800 and 600 and can compare the two? Also, looking for recommendations on nice fountain pens.
afaik the 800 is just a 600 with a retractable tip.
I'm not looking for something too expensive, but it can be up to like maybe $50 if it looks nice. I know that amount probably won't go very far, but looking for range of fountain pens that are cheaper and up to that price. Also, looking for recommendations on nice fountain pens.

Thx will look into those.
I'd say the Lamy pens are right up your alley then, Safari/Vista/AL-Star are all the same shape, the Safari is coloured plastic, Vista is clear plastic and the AL-Star is aluminium.
I can't remember the prices, but the AL-Star should fit within your budget, and while it is more expensive it is also the best looking. If you really want a demonstrator then I'd suggest looking at TWSBI instead since they look a lot cleaner than the Vista.

Ended up getting my Lamy Al-Star graphite fountain pen the other day and I love it. It looks so nice and sleek and it ended up being like only $30 on Amazon :)
How do you guys get the fountain pen to drag less when you write? Just something you need to get used to?
check the angle at which you are holding the nib.
That must be the pen that has most bang for the buck ive seen.Quote from: Quarzac;610947That link isn't working for me.

What was wrong with it? I was considering buying one.
I have two Lamy Safari pens that I am rather fond of—one extra fine, one fine. The fine one is lime green and currently contains Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/mxyJJQw.jpg)
The other one is graphite colored and currently contains a purple ink cartridge from Lamy. I’ve attempted using Noodler’s Black, but it really did poorly with the EF nib in my graphite Safari. It was better in the F nib pen, but it dried a bit too slowly for me (I’m left-handed). Wasn’t too fond of it. REALLY love the Pilot Iroshizuku, though. More than I’d like to admit spending on ink, but it’s dang nice.
I’ve also got a set of Rotring technical pens that I own because they were in my college bookstore years ago, and I was an 18 year-old who was given a school debit card, and hey, why use it for food when there’s cool pens to be bought? I let them sit around too much while I was in college though, so they’re not in the greatest condition. I need to clean them out pretty badly, but it’s a real pain.
I’d like to get a nicer mech. pencil one of these days, but I don’t really have much of a reason to have one anymore. Then again, impracticality never stopped me from buying things. :D
Here's the thing with those inks.. Unless you're female... you can't get away with anything other than Blue Black or Dark Green...
If you use any other color... no one would take you seriously...
Guys... drafting pencils are balanced and designed for Drafting...
This means:
drawing straight lines...
heavy at the base and heavy overall
It makes no sense to WRITE with a drafting pencil...

My point is that light weight, soft leaded pencils is BEST as far as pencils, for writing..
and the typical drafting pencil is not ideal for such tasks.
This does not conflict or has anything to do with the fact that... When you're drafting, due to the potentially combination nature of drawing lines and small segments of written markups.. it'd be inconvenient to switch tools...
my statement only applies to the kiddies using drafting pencils to WRITE, when they do not at all draft..
Writing during drafting is no explanation or at all counter to my argument.. You've misplaced your angst in defense of the drafting pencil...

I only use 1 pen at school and It's the Uni Jetstream 4&1 4 Color 0.7 mm Ballpoint Multi Pen (http://www.jetpens.com/Uni-Jetstream-4-1-4-Color-0.7-mm-Ballpoint-Multi-Pen-0.5-mm-Pencil-Black-Body/pd/3605). You can buy it at Jetpens.com. I use it to make notes.
Also I think these highlighters (http://www.jetpens.com/Zebra-Mildliner-Soft-Color-Double-Sided-Highlighter-Pen-5-Mild-Fluorescent-Color-Set/pd/4866) are amazing for notes.

People keep saying that... but it hasn't really been on the merits of the pencil.. I find that it's claim to fame has always been more on the side of "elite ownership"..
Exactly like KMAC vs QFR... the aluminum shell doesn't REALLLY give increased measurable performance vs a plastic shell, it's cooler to the touch, it feeeels more solid, it looks nicer..
BUT ultimately you type the same on a KMAC or QFR, , because the exterior was not a functional expense...
Plastic graphing pencils produce lines that are just as stable as aluminum graphing pencils..
So we can then say that the Aluminum is a form of VAnity...
Would you say.. Vanity trim is what makes a TOOL better?

Really, the Rotring 600 is endgame to me, not because of elitism, but the feel of it is amazing. It feels just right in my hand. It isn't too large or too small. It isn't a featherweight, but it doesn't feel like a million pounds in the hand. I like heavier pencils, and the Rotring fits the bill perfectly.
So is it functionally better? Not necessarily. Is it nicer to use? Yes, by a long shot.
Really, a better comparison is vintage blacks to normal blacks (I know you can't feel a difference and you hate the comparison), or lubed to non-lubed switches. Are they functionally the same (press it down to complete a circuit)? Yes. Do they provide the same user experience? No, definitely not.
Just a question, are you an engineer or a drafter and you use these for strictly drawings or do you use these for writing? As a student I'm looking at getting a 600

I'm an engineer/drafter and I use my 600s daily at work on drawings. They have very fine lines (I have a .5mm and a .7mm) which are great for marking up drawings. I also use them to take notes. I'd recommend a 600 for either task. However, I've been looking at the TWSBI mechanical pencils which are really intriguing.
Hmm the Rotring 600 may be the pencil for me then. I think I'm going to have to pull the triggerYep, you won't regret it!

I am a student and I mostly use it for writing, but I do a bit of drawing as well, and I completely agree with Mr. BadAss for its worthiness in both those catagories. The only reason I haven't taken it to school is because I'd lose it and its expensive. If you don't mind the price, you really can't go wrong with the 600.

Just for clarity's sake, I'm referring to blueprint drawings. Not artistic drawings.

bic matic grip mechanical is my go to pencil
also thinking about getting a luxury pen montblanc, parker duofold or montegrappa with a solid gold nibb
I've always had a fascination with mechnical pencils. I had some of the old classic Pentels. Since I'm no longer in school doing calculus, physics, chemistry, etc, there's not a need much for pencils for me. Neither is writing in general, as I'm on a computer so much.
It's hard for me to justify spending a lot on a writing instrument, but some of my favorites:
1. Fisher Astronaut Space Pen
2. Kyocera Roller Ball (I can't remember the model #)
3. Old Pentel Mechanical pencils (I can't remember any particular model numbers, but I liked the 0.5 and 0.7 mm lead)
I have quite a few Cross Pen/Pencils given to me over the years, which are OK. The Cross Century mechnical pencil barrel feels a little thin for me to grip.
Looking to buy a new pencil for school since I lost my old one. I had the Kuru Toga Rotation Mechanical Pencil and I enjoyed using it. Was wondering how well it compared to the Rotring 600. Thoughts?

In general, I despise anything that writes at .7mm or larger unless I need a bold line. I gotta have my .5mm and smaller pens and pencils.
Show ImageFor work purposes (I'm an Electrical Designer), I use Pilot Precise V5's in red, blue, green, purple, black, and teal to mark up drawings or do quick sketches.

I really like the V5s. They're my go-to cheap-ish pen. I need to order some red ones online, because in the hell that was OfficeMax during school shopping they were fresh out of red V5s.

That Zebra is like the only mechanical pencil I can stand.
For reference, I have large handwriting and using fine instruments helps decrease its size somehow. I wouldn't be able to do math problems that require half a page.
Are the disposable ones nice to use?

Pilot Varsity pens have a surprisingly nice nib. I'm using an IBM branded one at work and it's great. Plus you can refill them if you don't wanna toss em.
Thanks, I'll get one of those before spending more money on a good fountain pen.
Still have yet to find a pen I like more than the G2 .07. The weight, the grip, the ink (thankfully I'm a righty), it's just perfect IMO. I've been searching for something better, but I've yet to come across something I like more.

Karas Kustoms pens accept G2 as refills.
My favorite has got to be the Rotring 600.

My favorite pencil, bar none. Had mine for 15+ years, then my wife breaks it in one afternoon :-(
I don't know. She pushed in the advance, it didn't pop back out, she just kept pushing it, then it popped out and the innards with it.
Ughhhh pics of the stipula? I just got another Esterbrook today :)
I picked up a CH and a purse pen in pastel pink
I've used a Zebra M-402 mechanical pencil for years. Eraser is crap, but that's just encouragement to not make mistakes. :p
My Stipula Etruria. It's a celluloid model. Has amazing depth and a beautiful shimmer in the light. My pics don't capture it.
Wife got it for me after I finished a grueling Theology of Jonathan Edwards class. Oh I have to agree all around. The erasers they put on mechs are either too small... or too small and very crappy.
That's why I use these:

The rectangle white ones are what I use and sometimes a cheaper brand I find at Walmart by Pentel or something. Great erasers. My Zebra M-301 has that tiny useless eraser problem.
Just upgraded...

It's a good pen but it's supposed to be a medium nib.

how are the threads on the barrel? many are usually stained pretty bad from old ink and hard to get back to the original plastic.
also.............did they come with any uncommon nib units on them?

Not super expensive but, get yourself a twsbi. Great first pens imo
unlike the weird **** safari has that i can't use for the life of mesafari's grip area is perfect.
Dropped my Rotring 600 today and bent the nib. :'(
Guess this is my chance to give the 800 a try.

Wait, I know there's a rotring 600 FP and pencil (which I have: sweet pencil), is there a rotring 800 FP or did you bend your rotring 600 pencil tip?
Either way it's a tragedy. Have you contacted them, maybe there's a way to get a replacement part? I think replacing the nib on the FP can be done without too much effort, and rebending it might be a possibility there too.

Ive seen replacement tips on jetpens, so you probably can replace the tip.Dropped my Rotring 600 today and bent the nib. :'(

Whoops, I mean the pencil tip.
I tried gently rebending it but it fell out, and I made the mistake of doing so over carpet so now I can't find it. It still writes okay but it's pretty wobbly. I'm not sure if the tip can be replaced, but I'll contact them and see what they say.

nope, feels horrible. round grip > that 3 point crap
right, touch screen is annoying  for Handphone keypad better ;DWhat... people still use pens...?
People still use keyboards? I thought everybody used those fancy touch screens now
no one wants to use a touch screen, it's only cuz they have to....
mouse and keyboard... all the way....Show Image(http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/th_091_-3.gif)
I never paid much attention to this thread and always have been using crappy pens but then the other day I had to sign some legal paperwork and I had no pen with me so someone gave me his (ballpoint ?) pen so I could sign. I immediately how "nice" and "sweet" this thing was, both the feeling in the hand and the feeling while writing.
So I said "Nice pen!" (well, in french) and looked at the thing: apparently it was an Dupont / S.T. Dupont one.
So I'm convinced: I want something like that. Not necessarily something in the hundreds and hundreds or euros / dollars and not necessarily a Dupont but something of quality. A (ballpoint) pen that you can take in your hand and immediately notice the quality. I care about the look and the feeling when I hold the pen as much as the quality of writing: I don't want something looking "cheapo-plastic", no matter how good it is at writing.
So I'm asking the oracle here: which ballpoint pen should I buy, knowing that it's mostly going to be to sign legal paperwork (so no heavy use, although I do tend to have to sign quite a lot of papers)? :thumb:

I'm very partial to the Fisher Space Pen. I think it's the only ballpoint I have left that I actually use.
I'll go either with a Space Pen or with a "Caran d'Ache" model "Alchemix", which seems both reasonably priced, good looking and seems to be enjoyable to hold. Heck, I may buy both and see which one I prefer.
Anyway: thanks a lot for the tips to the pencil noob that I am ^ ^
