Making Stuff Together! / You can put rotary encoders in a keyboard matrix!
« Last post by Snipeye on Sat, 11 May 2024, 21:14:57 »
I've managed 32, in the pictures below I built a board that does 30 - you need about 2K+ scans/second to avoid missing a transition, but that's not too hard to achieve.

Additionally, since encoders have the "common" pin between A and B, you need 2 matrix slots in the same row (if diodes are oriented col2row) or the same or the same column (if diodes are oriented row2col).

Aside from that, it's pretty straightforward.

I have a PR to QMK to show how it's done, visible at https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/pull/23700 if you care.

Off Topic / Re: Soft Rim is best !!

The rim one is much easier to hold down while scrolling, The dome one is good, but your finger slides off if you hold it down.

1. The front is too high. It should be less than 20mm.
2. The tail light looks cheap and needs more color.
3. I'll definitely buy the Polycarbonate version if there's an option.
ad 1. I agree, front height needs to come down.
ad 2. Please offer the tail light just as an optional version

Keyboards / Re: Unpopular Keyboard Opinions

QWERTY should be discontinued.
Staggered should be discontinued.
All keyboards should be ortholinear. Or hexagonal. Or something.
Meh, I'd pass hard on that opinion. Don't get me wrong you are right from an ergonomic & speed perspective, but TBH ortho layouts just look so bland to me. Also QWERTY is way to ingrained in me to even want to change. Although I do not use my keyboards at work & do not need the best ergonomics or most efficient layout, so I can see why these are more sought after for people who have to type all day for work.

Yeah it definitely seems better for typing, but I'm just used to qwerty and staggered as well.

One ortho board that looks sick is the lumberjack 60 project, It's very visually appealing especially with the through hole components separating the two halfs. Would be a fun project to do too, even if it wouldn't get too much use

I do agree the Lumberjack does look pretty cool, but I think that's more thanks to the exposed diodes/controller. Those boards always look really cool to me.
